(9) ¶The disciples of John used to fast often: and they come and say unto Jesus, Why do thy disciples fast not? Jesus said unto them,

(4) Do on then fast; let see how thou bearest thee. Seest thou not how He standeth and abideth thee? For shame! Travail fast but awhile, and thou shalt soon be eased of the greatness and of the hardness of this travail. For although it be hard and strait in the beginning, when thou hast no devotion; nevertheless yet after, when thou hast devotion, it shall be made full restful and full light unto thee that before was full hard. And thou shalt have either little travail or none, for then will God work sometimes all by Himself. But not ever, nor yet no long time together, but when Him list and as Him list; and then wilt thou think it merry to let Him alone.

(12) Now fastings signify abstinence from all evils whatsoever, both in action and in word, and in thought itself. As appears, then, righteousness is quadrangular; on all sides equal and like in word, in deed, in abstinence from evils, in beneficence, in gnostic perfection; nowhere, and in no respect halting, so that he does not appear unjust and unequal. As one, then, is righteous, so certainly is he a believer. But as he is a believer, he is not yet also righteous - I mean ac cording to the righteousness of progress and perfection, according to which the Gnostic is called righteous.

(6) The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: therefore the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

(8) ¶Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

(2) And every one who observeth it and keepeth Sabbath thereon from all his work, will be holy and blessed throughout all days like unto us.

(2) But certain of the Pharisees said unto Jesus, Behold, why do thy disciples on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? Jesus said unto them,

(2) And He gave us a great sign, the Sabbath day, that wen 'should work six days, but keep Sabbath on the seventh day from all work.

(50) Six days wilt thou labour, but on the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it ye shall do no manner of work, ye and your sons, and your men-servants and your maid-servants, and all your cattle and the sojourner also who is with you.

(2) And they shall not bring in nor take out from house to house on that day ; for that day is more holy and blessed than any jubilee day of the jubilees : on this we kept Sabbath in the heavens be- fore it was made known to any flesh to keep Sabbath thereon on the earth.

(50) Ye shall do no work whatever on the Sabbath day save that honour which the Lord hath given to Israel that they should eat and drink and be satisfied on this festival clay, and rest thereon from all labour * which belongeth to the labour of the children of men, save burning frankincense and bringing oblations and sacrifices before the Lord for days and for Sabbaths. II. This work alone shall be done on the Sabbath-days in the sanctuary of the Lord your God ; that they may atone for Israel with sacrifice continually from day to day for a memorial well-pleasing before the Lord, and that He may receive them always from day to day according as thou hast been commanded.

(4) It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

(61) In one 'twas said, "Thy fasting and thy charity Are both a making thyself equal with God; Save faith and utter resignation to God's will In weal and woe, all virtues are fraud and snares." In one 'twas said, "Works are the one thing needful; The doctrine of faith without works is a delusion." In one 'twas said, "Commands and prohibitions are Not for observance, but to demonstrate our weakness, That we may see our own weakness (to carry them out), And thereby recognize and confess God's power."

(50) And every man who doeth any work thereon, or goeth a journey, or tilleth (his) farm, whether in his house or any other place, and whoever lighteth a fire, or rideth on any beast, or travelleth by ship on the sea, and whoever striketh or killeth anything, or slaughter- ed a beast or a bird, or whoever catcheth an animal or a bird or a fish, or whoever fastcth or maketh war on the Sabbaths :

(4) The ruler of the synagogue, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, said with indignation unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.

(24) He knows also the enigmas of the fasting of those days - I mean the Fourth and the Preparation. For the one has its name from Hermes, and the other from Aphrodite. He fasts in his life, in respect of covetousness and voluptuousness, from which all the vices grow. For we have already often above shown the three varieties of fornication, according to the apostle - love of pleasure, love of money, idolatry. He fasts, then, according to the Law, abstaining from bad deeds, and, according to the perfection of the Gospel, from evil thoughts.

(2) Declare and say to the children of Israel the law of this day both that they should keep Sabbath thereon, and that they should not forsake it in the error of their hearts; (and) that it is not lawful to do any work there- on which is unseemly, to do thereon their own pleasure,* and that they should not prepare thereon anything to be eaten or drunk, jand (that it is not lawful) to draw water, or bring in or take out thereon through their gates any burden, | which they had not 1 viz. the Sabbath. * viz. Jacob. after their oyon pleasure above. For the law about " bringing in or taking out . . . any burden " on the Sabbath, cf. ii. ,

(2) And thus He created therein a sign in accordance with which they should keep Sabbath with us on the seventh day, to eat and to drink, and to bless Him who hath created all things as He hath blessed and sanctified unto Himself a peculiar people above all peoples, and that they should keep Sabbath together with us.

(2) And He said unto us : " Behold, I will separate unto Myself a people from among all the peoples, and these will keep the Sabbath day, and. I will sanctify them unto Myself as My people, and will bless them ; as I have sanctified the Sabbath day and do sanctify (it) unto Myself, even so shall I bless them, and they will be My people and I shall be their God.

(40) It is not our aim to pursue this subject in further detail and to mention further senseless heresies. To put them to shame we should be forced to deal with each one, and to state our objections to each point, which would extend these notes to an un- conscionable length. Accordingly we may divide all the heresies into two groups in making answer to them. Either they teach that one ought to live on the principle that it is a matter of indifference whether one does right or wrong, or they set a too ascetic tone and proclaim the necessity of continence on the ground of opinions which are godless and arise from hatred of what God has created. First we may discuss the former group. If it is lawful to live any sort of life one likes, obviously one may live in continence; or if any kind of life has no dangers for the elect, obviously one of virtue and self-control is far less dangerous. If the "lord of the sabbath" has been given the right to pass uncorrected if he lives an immoral life, a fortiori there will be no correction for him who behaves decently. " All things are lawful, but all things are not expedient," says the apostle. If all things are lawful, obviously this includes self-control.
