(2) Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

(13) The blind man said, Lord, that I might receive my sight. And Jesus said,

(27) ¶Jesus cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him.

(1) UNTO Jesus was brought one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb; and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

(5) 'Fools dwelling in darkness, wise in their own conceit, and puffed up with vain knowledge, go round and round, staggering to and fro, like blind men led by the blind.'

(24) Some of the Pharisees heard these words, and said, Are we blind also? Jesus answered,

(1) AS JESUS passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. His disciples asked, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered,

(25) If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

(22) When he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them,

(15) Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

(39) Hearken: If it does not become me to ask, then it does not become thee to judge me. Dost thou boast in the knowledge of the light, and art a leader of the blind, and yet art blind thyself? How wilt thou shew the way to the blind? In your blindness must you not both fall? But you will say, We are not blind; for we well see the way of the light. Why then do you contend or dispute about the way of the light, if none can see it rightly?

(72) Thou sayest, Is it right then that the Heathen, Jews, and Turks, should persevere in their blindness? Answer.

(21) ¶When Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.

(14) Again the Jews called the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man [Jesus] is a sinner: we know not from whence he is.

(52) Therefore take heed what thou dost, and consider what thou art; thou judgest others, and art blind thyself.

(103) And this now is the earthly god of blind men, which they love and honour, and leave the living God, who stands hidden in the centre, sitting in his seat. For the dead flesh comprehendeth only a dead god, and longeth also only after such a dead god. But it is such a god as has thrown many men headlong into hell.

(1) A MULTITUDE followed Jesus. Nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging: and hearing the multitude, he asked what it meant. They told him, Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.

A mule said to a camel, "How is it that I am always stumbling and falling down, whilst you never make a false step?" The camel replied, "My eyes are always directed upwards, and I see a long way before me, while your eyes look down, and you only see what is immediately under your feet." The mule admitted the truth of the camel's statement, and besought him to act as his guide in future, and the camel consented to do so. Just so partial reason cannot see beyond the grave, but real reason looks onward to the day of judgment, and, therefore, is enabled to steer a better course in this world. For this cause, men having only partial reason or mere opinion of their own ought to follow the guidance of the saints, according to the text, "O believers, enter not upon any affair ere God and his Apostle lead the way." Then follows another anecdote of an Egyptian who asked an Israelite to draw water for him from the Nile, because the water of the Nile turned to blood when drawn by an Egyptian. Afterwards the Egyptian asked the Israelite to pray for him, and the Israelite admonished him to renounce his egotism and conceit of his own existence, which blinded his eyes to divine verities. In illustration of this he tells the same story of an adulterous woman, which is known as the "Merchant's Tale" in Chaucer. This woman, desiring to carry on an intrigue with her paramour, climbed up a pear-tree to gather the fruit, and when she had reached the top she looked down, and pretended that she saw her husband misconducting himself with another woman. The husband assured her there was no one but himself there, and desired her to come down and see for herself. She came down and admitted there was no one there. Her husband then, at her request, ascended the tree, and she at once called her paramour, and began to amuse herself with him. Her husband saw her from his post in the tree, and began to abuse her; but she declared there was no man with her, and that the pear-tree made her husband see double, just as it had made her see double previously.

(311) The wise man shares in the kingdom of God; an evil man does not want the foreknowledge of God to come to pass.
