(51) 2. The three Mothers, א מ ש, enclose a great, wonderful, and unknown mystery, and are sealed by six wings (or elementary circles), namely, air, water, fire--each divided into an active and a passive power. The Mothers, א מ ש, gave birth to the Fathers (the progenitors), and these gave birth to the generations.

(98) But through the third mother they cannot constantly or permanently shine, for the third mother stands in the house of darkness; but they often cast a glimpse upon the third mother, even as if it lightened, whereby the third mother many times becometh very longing, and rejoiceth highly, but is soon bolted up again by the fierceness of God's wrath.

(106) The other three, viz. the heat, the love, and the tone, stand in the incomprehensibility, and are generated out of the first three; and this now is the inward birth, wherewith the Deity qualifieth, mixeth or uniteth.

(3) "Mother" figuratively means Country and sustenance; "fathers" are the laws of civil polity: which must be contemned thankfully by the high-souled just man; for the sake of being the friend of God, and of obtaining the right hand in the holy place, as the Apostles have done.

(13) As to the beginning of the poem, the two first lines refer entirely to the activity of the Golden Flower. The two next lines are concerned with the mutual interpenetration of sun and moon. The sixth month is the adhering (Li) fire. The white snow that lies, is the true darkness of polarity in the middle of the fire sign, that is about to turn into the receptive. The third watch is the abysmal (K'ari) water. The sun's disk is the one polar line in the sign for water, which is about to turn into the creative. In this is contained the way to take the sign for the abysmal and the way to reverse the sign for the adhering (ire Li). The following two lines have to do with the activity of the pole of the Great Wain, the rise and fall of the whole release of polarity. Water is the sign of the abysmal; the eye is the wind of softness (Sun). The light of the eyes illumines the house of the abysmal, and controls there the seed of the great Light. " In Heaven " means the house of the creative (ChHen).

(97) But when the third mother is kindled in the light, then it stands in the created heaven of the holy life, and shineth through the second mother, the seven spirits, whereby the seven spirits get a friendly, courteous will, which is the love of the life, as you may read in the eighth chapter of this book, concerning the lovebirth or geniture of God.

(103) First there is the ground, or the corporeal being, although in the Deity, or in the creatures, it [the heat] has no peculiar or several body, for all the qualities are one in another as one, however the operation of every quality is perceived in particular and severally.

(26) The heat is the third murderous spirit, which killed its mother, the sweet water; but the astringent spirit is the cause thereof, for by its stern, severe attracting together and hardening, it has thus vehemently awakened and kindled the fire by the bitter quality; for the fire is the sword of the astringent and bitter quality.

(8) Our Life in the Mother's Body has its Beginning wholly, as is above mentioned, and stands there now in the Quality of the Sun and Stars, where then, with the Kindling of the Light, a Center springs up again, where instantly the noble Tincture thus generates itself (out of the Light, out of the joyful Essences of the [sour] harsh, bitter, and fiery Kind [or Quality,]) and sets the Spirit of the Soul in a great pleasant Habitation: And the three i Essences (viz. Harshness, Bitterness, and Fire) are in the Kindling of the Life so very fast bound one to another, that they cannot (in Eternity) be separated one from another, and the Tincture is their eternal House, wherein they dwell, which [House] they themselves generate from the Beginning unto Eternity, which again gives them Life, Joy, and Lust [or Delight.] The strong Gate of the indissoluble Band of the Soul.

(95) And this now is the mother of the soul, which shineth through the seven spirits, and makes them living; and in their stead the seed qualifieth, mixeth or uniteth with the Heart of God. But the seed which so qualifieth is that seed alone in which the light is kindled: in that in which the wrath-fire burneth, there this third mother remaineth captive in the dark chamber.

(17) From the south, the Yellow Tseurima, holding a bow and arrow, ready to shoot; from the west, the Red Pramoha, holding a maWa-banner; from the north, the Black Petali, holding a dorje and a blood-filled skull-bowl; from the south-east, the Red Pukkase, holding intestines in the right [hand] and [with] the left putting them to her mouth; from the south-west, the Dark-Green Ghasmarl, the left [hand] holding a blood- filled skull-bowl, [with] the right stirring it with a dorje, and [she then] drinking it with majestic relish; from the north-west, the Yellowish- White Tsandhal?, tearing asunder a head from a corpse, the right [hand] holding a heart, the left putting the corpse to the mouth and [she then] eating [thereof]; from the north-east, the Dark-Blue Smasha, tearing asunder a head from a corpse and eating [thereof]: these, the Eight Kerimas of the Abodes [or Eight Directions], also come to shine upon thee, surrounding the Five Blood-drinking Fathers. Yet be not afraid.

(13) Figure 26 is the character of the air, showing that air is born out of the Eternal Light and the ethereal water. Figure 27 is the character of water. It is the inversion of Figure 26, indicating that its origin is from the lower fire and not the higher. Its upper part signifies that water does not lack the Divine element, but as a universal mirror reflects the heavenly influences. Figures 28 and 29 are symbols of salt, showing that it is both fire and water in one. Figure 30 is the character of fire in all its attributes, and Figure M (the same inverted), water in all its powers. Figure 32 is the character of salt in all its attributes. Figure 33 represents both gold and the sun. Their essential natures are identical, being formed from the first fire out of Schamayim. They are perfect, as can be seen from their symbol, for no more perfect form can be produced out of the dot than the circle.

(53) The astringent and bitter qualities are the father of the heat, and the sweet fountain-water is its mother, which conceiveth, retaineth and generateth it: For the heat existeth through the astringent and bitter hard driving, which riseth up in the sweet quality, as in wood or fuel.

(12) Before the throne of God was the crystal sea representing the Schamayim, or the living waters which are above the heavens. Before the throne also were four creatures--a bull, a lion, an eagle, and a man. These represented the four corners of creation and the multitude of eyes with which they were covered are the stars of the firmament. The twenty-four elders have the same significance as the priests gathered around the statue of Ceres in the Greater Eleusinian Rite and also the Persian Genii, or gods of the hours of the day, who, casting away their crowns, glorify the Holy One. As symbolic of the divisions of time, the elders adore the timeless and enduring Spirit in the midst of them.

(42) But now God separated the Fire (viz. the fifth Essence or Form) from the Water, and out of that made the Stars; and the Paradise is hid in the Matrix. Therefore now the Mother of the Water desires with great Earnestness the Mother of the Fire, and seeks the Child of Love; and the Mother of the Fire seeks it in the Mother of the Water, where it was generated, and there is between them a continual vehement Hunger one after another to copulate.

(11) But mark the Depth, in a Similitude which I set down thus; the harsh Spring in the Original is the Mother out of which the other five Springs are generated, viz. Bitterness, Fire, Love, Sound, and Water. Now these are Members of this Birth [of their Mother,] and without them there would be nothing but an anguishing dark Vale [or vacuum,] where there could be no Mobility, nor any Light or Life: But now the Life is born in her by the kindling of the Light, and then she rejoices in her own Property, and labours in her own tart sour Quality to generate again; and in her own Quality there rises a Life again, and a Center opens itself again, and the Life comes to be generated again out of her in a six-fold Form, yet not in any such Anguish as at the Beginning, but in great Joy.

(50) Thus the Birth gets an Essence that has Sharpness from the Harshness, and Sweetness, Thinness, and Expansion from the Light. And now when the Flash of Fire comes into its Mother, and finds her so sweet, thin, and light, P then it loses its own Propriety in the Qualification, and flies aloft no more, but continues in its Mother, and loses its fiery Right [or Propriety,] and trembles and rejoices in its Mother.

(57) Now these three qualities would be dark and dead, if the heat were not therein: But as soon as the spring time cometh, that the sun with its beams reacheth and warmeth the earth, the spirit becometh living by the heat in the tree, and the spirits of the tree begin to grow green, flourish and blossom.

(104) The second spirit is the water: As the astringent or harsh quality is the father of the other six spirits, which attracteth or draweth them together, and so holds them, so the sweet water is the mother in which all spirits are conceived, kept and generated, that softeneth and saturateth them, wherein and whereby they get their life, and then the light and joyfulness riseth up therein.

(68) Just as, in the Salitter and Mercurius, the sun ruleth in all the powers of this world, that is, in softness and hardness, in sweetness and sourness, in bitterness and astringency, in heat and cold, in air and water.
