(16) I sever the horns from those who unite in resistance to me; the hidden ones who rise up in opposition against me; those who go upon their bellies

(40) While the unicorn is mentioned several times in Scripture, no proof has yet been discovered of its existence. There are a number of drinking horns in various museums presumably fashioned from its spike. It is reasonably certain, however, that these drinking vessels were really made either from the tusks of some large mammal or the horn of a rhinoceros. J. P. Lundy believes that the horn of the unicorn symbolizes the hem of salvation mentioned by St. Luke which, pricking the hearts of men, turns them to a consideration of salvation through Christ. Mediæval Christian mystics employed the unicorn as an emblem of Christ, and this creature must therefore signify the spiritual life in man. The single horn of the unicorn may represent the pineal gland, or third eye, which is the spiritual cognition center in the brain. The unicorn was adopted by the Mysteries as a symbol of the illumined spiritual nature of the initiate, the horn with which it defends itself being the flaming sword of the spiritual doctrine against, which nothing can prevail.

(10) But failure There? What can defensive horns serve to There? To sufficiency as living form, to completeness. That principle must be complete as living form, complete as Intellect, complete as life, so that if it is not to be one thing it may be another. Its characteristic difference is in this power of being now this, now that, so that, summing all, it may be the completest life-form, Intelligence complete, life in greatest fulness with each of the particulars complete in its degree while yet, over all that multiplicity, unity reigns.

If all were one identity, the total could not contain this variety of forms; there would be nothing but a self-sufficing unity. Like every compound it must consist of things progressively differing in form and safeguarded in that form. This is in the very nature of shape and Reason-Principle; a shape, that of man let us suppose, must include a certain number of differences of part but all dominated by a unity; there will be the noble and the inferior, eye and finger, but all within a unity; the part will be inferior in comparison with the total but best in its place. The Reason-Principle, too, is at once the living form and something else, something distinct from the being of that form. It is so with virtue also; it contains at once the universal and the particular; and the total is good because the universal is not differentiated.

(90) And I saw till the †shepherds and† eagles and those vultures and kites came, and †they cried to the ravens† that they should break the horn of that ram, and they battled and fought with it, and it battled with them and cried that its help might come.

(45) When the roarings of savage beasts are uttered, Let it come that they be changed into the sacred sounds of the Six Syllables; When pursued by snow, rain, wind, and darkness, Let it come that I see with the celestial eyes of bright Wisdom.

(7) I have had granted to it and awarded to it the glow of heart at the hour of the god of the Broad Face, and have offered the sacrificial cakes in Hermopolis

(3) And should I be led to the fields wherein the gods destroy him who answereth them, then shall the horns of Chepera be twisted back, then shall blindness arise in the eyes of Tmu and destruction, through the seizure of me, and through my being carried off to the East, through there being made over me a feast day of the fiends, through all the murderous work perpetrated upon me

(56) May this be heard without ceasing, may it hold sway for ever!

(62) And although the Driver compasses thee about, and will fetch thee away, yet there is a limit for thy Beast, how far it shall go, the Hunter cannot break [or destroy] it sooner than the limited Time; and then if he breaks it, or it is done only for [the Manifesting of] God's Deeds of Wonder, and for thy best Good; all thy Stripes in the thorny Bath shall stand in my Kingdom for a fair Ensign of thy Victory; and moreover, thou shalt have great Joy in it, before the Angels of God, in that thou hast despised the Hunter, and art gone out of a wild Birth into an angelical one. O how thou wilt rejoice, when thou shalt think upon thy wild Beast, which plagued thee Day and Night, in that thou art 0 loosed from it.

(4) O thou who guidest the Bark of Rā, sound is thy rigging and free from disaster as thou passest on to the Tank of Flame

(39) The unicorn, or monoceros, was a most curious creation of the ancient initiates. It is described by Thomas Boreman as "a beast, which though doubted of by many writers, yet is by others thus described: He has but one horn, and that an exceedingly rich one, growing out of the middle of his forehead. His head resembles an hart's, his feet an elephant's, his tail a boar's, and the rest of his body an horse's. The horn is about a foot and half in length. His voice is like the lowing of an ox. His mane and hair are of a yellowish colour. His horn is as hard as iron, and as rough as any file, twisted or curled, like a flaming sword; very straight, sharp, and every where black, excepting the point. Great virtues are attributed to it, in expelling of poison and curing of several diseases. He is not a beast of prey. " (See Redgrove's Bygone Beliefs.)

(11) When I behold Thy mouths, striking terror with their tusks, like Time’s all-consuming fire, I am disoriented and find no peace. Be gracious, Ο Lord of the gods, Ο Abode of the universe!

(90) And those ravens fought and battled with it and sought to lay low its horn, but they had no power over it.

The FUMIGATION from FRANKINCENSE. Brass-beating Salians, ministers of Mars, Who guard his arms the instruments of wars Whose blessed frames, heav'n, earth, and sea compose, And from whose breath all animals arose: Who dwell in Samothracia's sacred ground, Defending mortals thro' the sea profound. Deathless Curetes, by your pow'r alone, Initial rites to men at first were shewn: Who shake old Ocean thund'ring to the sky, And stubborn oaks with branches waving high. 'Tis your's in glittering arms the earth to beat, With lightly-leaping, rapid, sounding feet; Then every beast the noise terrific flies, And the loud tumult wanders thro' the skies: The dust your feet excites with matchless force, Flies to the clouds amidst their whirling course; And ev'ry flower of variegated hue, Grows in the dancing motion form'd by you. Immortal dæmons, to your pow'rs consign'd The talk to nourish, and destroy mankind. When rushing furious with loud tumult dire, O'erwhelm'd, they perish in your dreadful ire; And live replenish'd with the balmy air, The food of life, committed to your care. When shook by you, the seas, with wild uproar, Wide-spreading, and profoundly whirling, roar: The concave heav'ns, with Echo's voice resound, When leaves with ruffling noise bestrew the ground. Curetes, Corybantes, ruling kings, Whose praise the land of Samothracia sings: From Jove descended; whose immortal breath Sustains the soul, and wafts her back from death; Aerial-form'd, much-fam'd, in heav'n ye shine Two-fold, in heav'n all-lucid and divine: Blowing, serene, from whom abundance springs, Nurses of seasons, fruit-producing kings.

(90) All the eagles and vultures and ravens and kites were gathered together, and there came with them all the sheep of the field, yea, they all came together, and helped each other to break that horn of the ram.

(195) When thou shalt see a Terrestrial Dæmon approaching, Cry aloud! and sacrifice the stone Mnizourin.

(64) Make me offerings. I have been filled with the vital sap coming out of Osiris. I shall not be despoiled of it. The end

'Tis thine strong archer, all things to devour, Supreme, all-helping, all-producing pow'r; To thee mankind as their deliv'rer pray, Whose arm can chase the savage tribes away: Uweary'd, earth's best blossom, offspring fair, To whom calm peace, and peaceful works are dear. 13 Self-born, with primogenial fires you shine, And various names and strength of heart are thine. Thy mighty head supports the morning light, And bears untam'd, the silent gloomy night; From east to west endu'd with strength divine, Twelve glorious labours to absolve is thine; Supremely skill'd, thou reign'st in heav'n's abodes, Thyself a God amid'st th' immortal Gods. With arms unshaken, infinite, divine, Come, blessed pow'r, and to our rites incline; The mitigations of disease convey, And drive disasterous maladies away. Come, shake the branch with thy almighty arm, Dismiss thy darts and noxious fate disarm.
