(2) And on the fourth day He created the sun and the moon and the stars, and set them in the firmament of the heaven, to give light upon all the earth, and to rule over the day and the night, and divide the light from the darkness.

(14) Moses writes; God said, Let there be Light in the Firmament of Heaven, which may separate and distinguish Day and Night, and be for Signs, for Times and Seasons, for Days and Years; and to be for Lights in the Firmament of Heaven, to shine upon the Earth; and it was so. And God made two great Lights, the greater Light to rule the Day, and the lesser Light to rule the Night: Also he made the Stars. And God set them in the Firmament of Heaven, that they might shine upon the Earth, and rule the Day and the Night, and separate the Light from the Darkness.

(72) All the Stars which Men see, and those which they do not see, they all signify the Power of God the Father; and out of these Stars is generated the Sun, which is the Heart of all the Stars.

(12) The Moon-god he caused to shine forth, the night he entrusted to him

(26) Moses writes concerning them thus; 'And God said; Let there be Lights in the Firmament of Heaven, to divide or distinguish the Day from the Night, and let them give [a Gen. 1. 14-19.] Signs and Seasons, Days and Years; and let them be Lights in the Firmament of Heaven to shine or give Light upon the Earth; and it was so done. And God made two great Lights; the greater Light to rule the Day, and the lesser Light to rule the Night; as also the Stars. And God set them in the Firmament of the Heaven, to shine or give Light upon the Earth; and to rule Day and Night; and also to divide or distinguish the Light from the Darkness; and God saw that it was good, so out of the Evening and Morning the fourth Day came to be.

(19) And the Light of the Sun is as it were a God in the Nature of this World, and by its Virtue [and Influence] it continually kindles the Stars [or Constellations] whereby the Stars [or Constellations] (which are of a very terrible and anguishing Essence) continually exult in Triumph very joyfully. For it [the Sun] is an Essence like the Light of God, which kindles and enlightens the dark Mind of the Father, from whence, by the Light, there arises the divine Joy in the Father.

(3) But if thou wouldst "see" him, bethink thee of the sun, bethink thee of moon's course, bethink thee of the order of the stars. Who is the One who watcheth o'er that order? For every order hath its boundaries marked out by place and number. The sun's the greatest god of gods in heaven; to whom all of the heavenly gods give place as unto king and master. And he, this so-great one, he greater than the earth and sea, endures to have above him circling smaller stars than him. Out of respect to Whom, or out of fear of Whom, my son, [doth he do this]? Nor like nor equal is the course each of these stars describes in heaven. Who [then] is He who marketh out the manner of their course and its extent?

(48) For as the Sun stands in the Midst, betwixt the Stars and the Earth, enlightening all Powers, and is the Light and Heart of all the Powers, and is all the Joy in this World; besides, all Beauty and Pleasantness standeth in the Light and Power of the Sun;

(140) And as the Light of God reigns in all the Powers of the Father, so he also reigned in all his Angels, as a mighty King of God, and wore on his Head the fairest Crown of Heaven.

(1) Since, however, every part of the heavens, every sign of the zodiac, all the motion of the heavens, every period of time according to which the world is moved, and all things contained in the wholes of the universe, receive the powers which descend from the sun, some of which are complicated with these wholes, but others transcend a commixture with them, the symbolical mode of signification represents these also, indicating “ that the sun is diversified according to the signs of the zodiac, and that every hour he changes his form .” At the same time, also, it indicates his immutable, stable, never failing, and at once collected communication of good to the whole world. But since the recipients of the impartible gift of the God are variously affected towards it, and receive multiform powers, from the sun, according to their peculiar motions, hence the symbolical doctrine evinces through the multitude of the gifts, that the God is one, and exhibits his one power through multiform powers.

(104) Morning and Evening are and reach only up from the Earth to the Moon, and take their Original from the Light of the Sun, and this makes Evening and Morning, as also the outward Day, and the outward dark Night, as every one knows.

(54) Now Heaven kindles with its Power the Stars and Elements, so that they move and work: And so the Head of Man is also like Heaven.

The FUMIGATION from FRANKINCENSE and MANNA. HEAR golden Titan, whose eternal eye With broad survey, illumines all the sky. Self-born, unwearied in diffusing light, And to all eyes the mirrour of delight: Lord of the seasons, with thy fiery car And leaping coursers, beaming light from far: With thy right hand the source of morning light, 7 And with thy left the father of the night. Agile and vig'rous, venerable Sun, Fiery and bright around the heav'ns you run. Foe to the wicked, but the good man's guide, O'er all his steps propitious you preside: With various founding, golden lyre, 'tis mine To fill the world with harmony divine. Father of ages, guide of prosp'rous deeds, The world's commander, borne by lucid steeds, Immortal Jove, all-searching, bearing light, 17 Source of existence, pure and fiery bright Bearer of fruit, almighty lord of years, Agil and warm, whom ev'ry pow'r reveres. Great eye of Nature and the starry skies, Doom'd with immortal flames to set and rise Dispensing justice, lover of the stream, The world's great despot, and o'er all supreme. Faithful defender, and the eye of right, Of steeds the ruler, and of life the light: With founding whip four fiery steeds you guide, When in the car of day you glorious ride. Propitious on these mystic labours shine, And bless thy suppliants with a life divine.

(57) Such Power the Stars borrow from Heaven, that they can make in the Flesh a living and moving Spirit in Man and Beast. The Moving of the Heaven makes the Stars moveable, and so the Head also makes the Body moveable.

(10) The sun does not thine there, nor the moon and the stars, nor these lightnings, and much less this fire. When he shines, everything shines after him; by his light all this is lighted.

(40) The Father's Power is all, in and above all Heavens, and the same Power every where generates the Light. Now this UNIVERSAL POWER is, and is called the Universal Power of the Father; and the Light which is generated out of that universal Power is, and is called the Son.

(2) for on the first day He created the heavens which are above and the earth and the waters and all the spirits which serve before Him — the angels of the presence, and the angels of sanctifi- cation, and the angels [of the spirit of fire and the angels] of the spirit of the winds,* and the angels of the spirit of the clouds, and of darkness, and of snow and of hail and of hoar frost, and the angels of the voices8 and of the thunder and of the lightning, and the angels of the spirits of cold and of heat, and of winter and of spring and of autumn and of summer, and of all the spirits of His creatures which are in the heavens and on the earth, (He created) the abysses and the darkness, eventide (and night), and the light, dawn and day, which He hath prepared in the know- ledge of His h,eart.

(46) Now Observe: The Sun sits in the Midst, in the Deep, between the Stars, in a round Circle, and is the Heart of the Stars, and gives Light and Power to all the Stars, to tempering the Power of the Stars, that all becomes pleasant and joyful.

(2) And God appointed the sun4 to be a great sign on the earth for days and for sabbaths and for months and for feasts and for years and for sabbaths of years and for jubilees and for all seasons of the years.

(5) And so he should be the full store of life and deathlessness; if that it needs must be that he should live for ever. And so the Sun, just as the Cosmos, lasts for aye. So is he, too, for ever ruler of [all] vital powers, or of [our] whole vitality; he is their ruler, or the one who gives them out. God, then, is the eternal ruler of all living things, or vital functions, that are in the World. He is the everlasting giver-forth of Life itself. Once for all [time] He hath bestowed Life on all vital powers; He further doth preserve them by a law that lasts for evermore, as I will [now] explain. XXX
