(7) For thus did Enoch, the father of your father command Methuselah, his son, and Methuselah his son Lamech, and Lamech commanded me all the things which his fathers commanded him.

(7) And I also will give you commandment, my sons, as Enoch commanded his son in the first jubilees : whilst still living, the ^pvpfltM jn hi«; gpnppat'^D, he commanded and testi- fied to his son and to his sons' sons until the day of his death." (20) And he commanded them that they should observe the way of the Lord ; that they should work righteousness, and love each his neighbour, and act 1 Notice that Methuselah is omitted, and Adam is reckoned among the saints (with Noah and Enoch). on this manner amongst all men ; that they should each so walk with regard to them as to do judgment and righteousness on the earth.

(10) And in his life on earth he excelled the children of men save Enoch because of the righteousness, wherein he was perfect. For Enoch's office was ordained for a testimony to the genera- tions of the world, so thathe should recount all the deeds of generation unto generation, till the day of judgment.

(1) And do thou write down for thyself all these words which I declare unto thee on this mountain, the first and the last, which shall come to pass in all the divisions of the days in the law and in the testimony and in the weeks and the jubilees unto eternity, until I descend and dwell with them throughout eternity."

(3) This is the law and testimony which was written down for Israel, in order that they should observe (it) all the days.

(3) In his Antiquities of the Jews, Josephus writes that Adam had forewarned his descendants that sinful humanity would be destroyed by a deluge. In order to preserve their science and philosophy, the children of Seth there fore raised two pillars, one of brick and the other of stone, on which were inscribed the keys to their knowledge. The Patriarch Enoch--whose name means the Initiator--is evidently a personification of the sun, since he lived 365 years. He also constructed an underground temple consisting of nine vaults, one beneath the other, placing in the deepest vault a triangular tablet of gold bearing upon it the absolute and ineffable Name of Deity. According to some accounts, Enoch made two golden deltas. The larger he placed upon the white cubical altar in the lowest vault and the smaller he gave into the keeping of his son, Methuseleh, who did the actual construction work of the brick chambers according to the pattern revealed to his father by the Most High. In the form and arrangement of these vaults Enoch epitomized the nine spheres of the ancient Mysteries and the nine sacred strata of the earth through which the initiate must pass to reach the flaming Spirit dwelling in its central core.

(4) And he was the first to write a testimony, and he testified to the sons of men among the generations of the earth, and recounted the weeks of the jubilees, and made known to them the days of the years, and set in order the months and re- counted the Sabbaths of the years as we made (them) known to him.

(5) "Write an oath in the book, so that those who read the book may not use the wording for malicious purposes or to subvert fate. Rather, they should submit to the law of god and not transgress whatsoever, but in purity ask god for wisdom and knowledge. And whoever will not be conceived in the beginning by god develops through the general and instructional discourses. Such a person will not be able to read what is written in this book, even though the person's conscience is pure within and the person does nothing shameful and does not go along with it. Rather, such a person progresses by stages and advances in the way of immortality, and so advances in the understanding of the eighth that reveals the ninth."

(8) And he found a writing which former (generations) had carved on the rock, and he read what was thereon, and he transcribed it and sinned owing to it ; for it contained the teaching of the Watchers in accordance with which they used to observe the omens of the sun and moon and stars in all the signs of heaven.

(23) And in that generation the sons will convict their fathers and their elders of sin and unrighteousness, and of the words of their mouth and the great wickednesses which they per- petrate, and concerning their forsaking the covenant • which the Lord made between them and Him, that they should observe and do all His commandments and His ordinances and all His laws, without depart- ing either to the right hand or to the left.

(21) And eat its meat on that day and on the second day, and let not the sun on the second day go down upon it till it is eaten, and let nothing be left over for the third day; for it is not acceptable [for it is not approved] and let it no longer be eaten, and all who eat thereof will bring sin upon themselves; for thus I have found it written in the books of mv forefathers, and in the words of Enoch, and in the words of Noah. n. And on all 7 Bracketed words a dittograph. 1 No trace of such halakic rules exists in the Books of Enoch or the fragments of the Noah apocalypse that nre ex- tant. The statement in the text seems to be drigihal to the author of Jubilees. thy oblations thou shalt strew salt, and let not the salt of the covenant be lacking in all thy oblations before the Lord.

(7) And in the twenty-eighth a.m. jubilee Noah began to enjoin upon his sons' sons the ordinances and commandments, and all the judgments thathe knew, and he exhorted his sons to observe righteousness, and to cover the shame of their flesh, and to bless their Creator, and honour father and mother, and love their neighbour, and guard their souls from fornication and uncleanness and all ini- quity. Si. For owing to these three things • came the flood upon the earth, namely, owing to the forni- cation wherein the Watchers against the law of their ordinances went a whoring after the daughters of men, and took themselves wives of all which they chose : T and they made the beginning of uncleanness.

(1) But I was full of joy, and I wrote this book. I was commissioned, my son Messos, to disclose to you the matters that were proclaimed before me. And I initially received them in great silence and (then) I settled into preparing myself. These are the things that were disclosed to me, O my [son] [Messos ... ] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [...] [ ... proclaim] [them, O my] son Messos.

(23) And do thou, Moses, write down these words; for thus are they written, and they record (them) on the heavenly tables for a testimony for the generations . for ever. 1 i. e. enjoy.

(10) AndNoath wrote down all things in a book as we instructed him con- cerning every kind of medicine. Thus the evil &r spirits were precluded from (hurting) the sons of Noah.
