(93) Behold! that is the birth or geniture of nature; and so, if in these three qualities, viz. the astringent, the bitter and the sweet, the wrath-fire were not kindled, then thou wouldst plainly see where God is.

(15) Concerning this kindling in this circumference or extent, it is that God calls himself an angry, zealous or jealous God against those that hate him; that is, against those who kindle his wrath and fierceness still more with their diabolical spirits, with swearing, cursing, blaspheming, and all manner of furious fierceness and wrath, which stick in the heart, with pride, covetousness, envy and anger. All that whatsoever is in thee, thou castest into God; ["that is, into the genitrix of nature, and therefore that must be proved and tried through the fire, and the soul's spirit also, and the wickedness or malice must abide and remain in the fire."] Now thou askest, How can that be? Answer.

(4) That water extinguishes fire and fire consumes other things should not astonish us. The thing destroyed derived its being from outside itself: this is no case of a self-originating substance being annihilated by an external; it rose on the ruin of something else, and thus in its own ruin it suffers nothing strange; and for every fire quenched, another is kindled.

In the immaterial heaven every member is unchangeably itself for ever; in the heavens of our universe, while the whole has life eternally and so too all the nobler and lordlier components, the Souls pass from body to body entering into varied forms- and, when it may, a Soul will rise outside of the realm of birth and dwell with the one Soul of all. For the embodied lives by virtue of a Form or Idea: individual or partial things exist by virtue of Universals; from these priors they derive their life and maintenance, for life here is a thing of change; only in that prior realm is it unmoving. From that unchangingness, change had to emerge, and from that self-cloistered Life its derivative, this which breathes and stirs, the respiration of the still life of the divine.

The conflict and destruction that reign among living beings are inevitable, since things here are derived, brought into existence because the Divine Reason which contains all of them in the upper Heavens- how could they come here unless they were There?- must outflow over the whole extent of Matter.

Similarly, the very wronging of man by man may be derived from an effort towards the Good; foiled, in their weakness, of their true desire, they turn against each other: still, when they do wrong, they pay the penalty- that of having hurt their Souls by their evil conduct and of degradation to a lower place- for nothing can ever escape what stands decreed in the law of the Universe.

This is not to accept the idea, sometimes urged, that order is an outcome of disorder and law of lawlessness, as if evil were a necessary preliminary to their existence or their manifestation: on the contrary order is the original and enters this sphere as imposed from without: it is because order, law and reason exist that there can be disorder; breach of law and unreason exist because Reason exists- not that these better things are directly the causes of the bad but simply that what ought to absorb the Best is prevented by its own nature, or by some accident, or by foreign interference. An entity which must look outside itself for a law, may be foiled of its purpose by either an internal or an external cause; there will be some flaw in its own nature, or it will be hurt by some alien influence, for often harm follows, unintended, upon the action of others in the pursuit of quite unrelated aims. Such living beings, on the other hand, as have freedom of motion under their own will sometimes take the right turn, sometimes the wrong.

Why the wrong course is followed is scarcely worth enquiring: a slight deviation at the beginning develops with every advance into a continuously wider and graver error- especially since there is the attached body with its inevitable concomitant of desire- and the first step, the hasty movement not previously considered and not immediately corrected, ends by establishing a set habit where there was at first only a fall.

Punishment naturally follows: there is no injustice in a man suffering what belongs to the condition in which he is; nor can we ask to be happy when our actions have not earned us happiness; the good, only, are happy; divine beings are happy only because they are good.

(7) But behold! when Lucifer with his host or army stirred or awakened the wrath-fire in the nature of God, so that God was moved to anger in nature in the place of Lucifer, then the outermost birth or geniture in nature gat another quality, which was very fierce, astringent, cold, hot, bitter and sour.

(26) O Man! here consider thyself, here thou seest from whence the devil and his fierce, wrathful malice has its original, as also God's wrath, and the hellish fire, also death and hell, and eternal damnation. Ye philosophers, observe that!

(63) Now let us view these in the ground from whence all has its original, and see how it is an enmity against God: and therein you will see what is the beginning and root of sin, and wherefore in God it cannot be suffered or endured.

(101) This spirit also came at first from pride, for pride thought and said to itself, Surely thou art beautiful, and mighty potent; and covetousness thought and said to itself, All must be thine; and envy thought and said to itself, All which is not obedient unto thee thou must kill with thy stinging; and thus it stung at the other gates of angels. But all was in vain, for its power and might reached no farther than the extent of the place out of which it was created. Of the Fourth Son, Wrath. [anger]

(19) Now this is the root of covetousness, envy, pride and wrath [anger]; for in the fierce qualifying or acting and boiling rose up the wrath, and burnt like fire of heat and cold, and was also bitter as gall.

(54) Man cannot be absolutely or wholly pure, or devoid of wrath and sin, for the births of the depth in this world are not fully pure before the heart of God [Job XV. 15]; love and wrath always wrestle the one with the other, whence God is called [Exod. XX. 5., Deut V. 9.] an angry zealous God.

(30) But, to speak briefly, the Good is from the one and the whole Cause, but the Evil is from many and partial defects. Almighty God knows the Evil qua good; and, with Him, the causes of the evils are powers producing good. But, if the Evil is eternal, and creates, and has power, and is, and does, whence do these come to it? Is it either from the Good, or by the Good from the Evil, or by both from another cause? Everything that is according to nature comes into being from a defined cause. And if the Evil is without cause, and undefined, it is not according to nature. For there is not in nature what is contrary to nature; nor is there any raison d' etre for want of art in art. Is then the soul cause of things evil, as fire of burning, and does it fill everything that it happens to touch with baseness? Or, is the nature of the soul then good, but, by its energies, exists sometimes in one condition, and sometimes in another? If indeed by nature, even its existence is an evil, and whence then does it derive its existence? Or, is it from the good Cause creative of the whole universe? But, if from this, how is it essentially evil? For good are all things born of this. But if by energies, neither is this invariable, and if not, whence are the virtues? Since it (the soul) comes into being without even seeming good. It remains then that the Evil is a weakness and a falling short of the Good.

(1) Second causes only operate in subordination to, and form the impulsion of, the First Cause. Air, earth, water, and fire are God's servants. To us they seem lifeless, but to God living. In God's presence fire ever waits to do its service, When you strike steel on flint fire leaps forth; But 'tis by God's command it thus steps forth. Strike not together the flint and steel of wrong, For the pair will generate more, like man and woman. The flint and steel are themselves causes, yet

(21) Now the question is, What in heaven is the wrath of God? And whether God be angry in himself; or how is God moved to anger? Answer. Here there are chiefly seven sorts of qualities or circumstances to be observed. I. Of the First Species or Circumstance.

(15) But observe here, rightly the earnest and severe birth or geniture, out of which the wrath of God, hell, and death, are come to be, which indeed have been from eternity in God, but not liable to be kindled or to become predominant.

(78) Now thou wilt ask, Seeing God is everywhere, and is himself All, how cometh it then that there is in this world such cold and heat, such biting and striking among all creatures, and that there is almost nothing else but mere fierceness or wrath in this world? Answer.

(17) When the love of God kindled the place of the sun, or the SUN, then, out of the anxiety, out of the place of the sun, out of the seven qualifying or fountain spirits of nature, there sprang up, first, the terrible, fierce, bitter fire-crack, whose birth and principal or first original is the kindled bitter wrath of God, in the astringent quality, through the water.

(70) But seeing it runneth counter, quite contrary to the love and meekness of the birth or geniture of God, and is a contrary or opposite will in the love of God, so that he is loath to hurt man, unless pressing necessity driveth him to it, therefore will the spirit have the wrath-bath or lake of nature set apart to be an eternal parching or drying place for jugglers, perverters or changers of God's ordinance or order: And therein they may practise and shew forth their new deity. Of the kindling of the Wrath-fire.

(29) For from the fiery quality the spirit becometh trembling and hot, and from the astringent it becometh severe, astringent, hard and corporeal, so that it is a spirit which always subsisteth; and from the sweet it becometh meek or mild, and the fierceness changeth it into a gentle bitterness; which stands now in the fountain or wellspring of the seven spirits of God, and helpeth continually to generate the other six spirits. Understand this rightly.

(5) For nature gat a twofold source, and the outermost birth or geniture in nature was kindled in the wrath-fire, which fire now is called the wrath of God, or the burning hell. Note.

(109) Not that these three qualities of the outermost birth, in which the wrath-fire stands, are rejected and reprobated of the innermost; no, but only the outward palpable body, and therein the outward hellish source, quality or torment.

(39) For when he and all his angels had kindled in their bodies the qualifying or fountain spirit of the fire, then the unctuosness, marrow or fatness burnt in the sweet water, and the flash or terror, which riseth up fiercely in the birth of the light, became raging and tearing, burning and stinging, and a being or substance of a mere opposite or contrary will.
