(103) Thou Child of Man, behold now, how great a Gate of Heaven, of Hell, and of the Earth, as also of the whole Deity, the Spirit opens to thee.

(121) Behold, thou understanding Spirit: The Spirit speaks to thee, and not to the dead Spirit of the Flesh: Open the Door of thy astral Birth wide, and elevate that one Part of the astral Birth in the Light, and let the other in the Wrath stand still, and take Heed also that thy animated or soulish Spirit do wholly unite with the Light. And

(8) Now elevate thy Sense, Thoughts and Spirit into the Deep of the Deity, for here a Gate is opened. The Place or Space of this World, the Deep of the Earth, and above the Earth even to Heaven, as also the created Heaven, which was made out of the Midst of the Waters, which moves above the Stars, and which we behold with our Eyes, whose Depth we cannot found or reach with our Sense; all this Place or Room together was one Kingdom, and Lucifer was King therein before his being thrust out. [Or Center.]

(1) I say, when as much as may be, it is known, felt and tasted of the soul. For the lack lieth altogether in us, and not in it. In like manner the sun lighteth the whole world, and is as near to one as another, yet a blind man seeth it not; but the fault thereof lieth in the blind man, not in the sun. And like as the sun may not hide its brightness, but must give light unto the earth (for heaven indeed draweth its light and heat from another fountain), so also God, who is the highest Good, willeth not to hide Himself from any, wheresoever He findeth a devout soul, that is thoroughly purified from all creatures. For in what measure we put off the creature, in the same measure are we able to put on the Creator; neither more nor less. For if mine eye is to see anything, it must be single, or else be purified from all other things; and where heat and light enter in, cold and darkness must needs depart; it cannot be otherwise. But one might say, “Now since the Perfect cannot be known nor apprehended of any creature, but the soul is a creature, how can it be known by the soul?” Answer: This is why we say, “by the soul as a creature.” We mean it is impossible to the creature in virtue of its creature-nature and qualities, that by which it saith “I” and “myself.” For in whatsoever creature the Perfect shall be known, therein creature-nature, qualities, the I, the Self and the like, must all be lost and done away.

(45) now seeing thou hast thy Reason, and art not like the Apple on the Tree, but art created an Angel and the Similitude or Image of God, instead of the expelled Devils, and knowest how thou canst with thy astral Birth, in the Part of Love, qualify or unite with the Word of God, therefore thou canst in the Center in the Word, set or put thy animated or soulish Birth into Heaven, and thou canst, with thy Soul, even with thy living Body in this dead or mortal Palpability, rule with God in Heaven.

(142) This now is the very Door of the hidden secret Mystery of the Deity. Concerning which the Reader is to conceive, that it is not in the Power or Capacity of any Man to discern or to know it, if the Dawning or Morning-Redness did not break forth in the Center in the Soul.

(11) This is the purport of that rule of our Mysteries: Nothing Divulged to the Uninitiate: the Supreme is not to be made a common story, the holy things may not be uncovered to the stranger, to any that has not himself attained to see. There were not two; beholder was one with beheld; it was not a vision compassed but a unity apprehended. The man formed by this mingling with the Supreme must- if he only remember- carry its image impressed upon him: he is become the Unity, nothing within him or without inducing any diversity; no movement now, no passion, no outlooking desire, once this ascent is achieved; reasoning is in abeyance and all Intellection and even, to dare the word, the very self; caught away, filled with God, he has in perfect stillness attained isolation; all the being calmed, he turns neither to this side nor to that, not even inwards to himself; utterly resting he has become very rest. He belongs no longer to the order of the beautiful; he has risen beyond beauty; he has overpassed even the choir of the virtues; he is like one who, having penetrated the inner sanctuary, leaves the temple images behind him- though these become once more first objects of regard when he leaves the holies; for There his converse was not with image, not with trace, but with the very Truth in the view of which all the rest is but of secondary concern.

There, indeed, it was scarcely vision, unless of a mode unknown; it was a going forth from the self, a simplifying, a renunciation, a reach towards contact and at the same time a repose, a meditation towards adjustment. This is the only seeing of what lies within the holies: to look otherwise is to fail.

Things here are signs; they show therefore to the wiser teachers how the supreme God is known; the instructed priest reading the sign may enter the holy place and make real the vision of the inaccessible.

Even those that have never found entry must admit the existence of that invisible; they will know their source and Principle since by principle they see principle and are linked with it, by like they have contact with like and so they grasp all of the divine that lies within the scope of mind. Until the seeing comes they are still craving something, that which only the vision can give; this Term, attained only by those that have overpassed all, is the All-Transcending.

It is not in the soul's nature to touch utter nothingness; the lowest descent is into evil and, so far, into non-being: but to utter nothing, never. When the soul begins again to mount, it comes not to something alien but to its very self; thus detached, it is not in nothingness but in itself; self-gathered it is no longer in the order of being; it is in the Supreme.

There is thus a converse in virtue of which the essential man outgrows Being, becomes identical with the Transcendent of Being. The self thus lifted, we are in the likeness of the Supreme: if from that heightened self we pass still higher- image to archetype- we have won the Term of all our journeying. Fallen back again, we awaken the virtue within until we know ourselves all order once more; once more we are lightened of the burden and move by virtue towards Intellectual-Principle and through the Wisdom in That to the Supreme.

This is the life of gods and of the godlike and blessed among men, liberation from the alien that besets us here, a life taking no pleasure in the things of earth, the passing of solitary to solitary.

(43) When thou beholdest the Deep betwixt the Stars and the Earth, canst thou say, that is not God, or there God is not? O, thou miserable corrupted Man! be instructed; for in the Deep above the Earth, where thou seest and knowest nothing, and sayest there is nothing, yet even there is the high-holy God in his Trinity, and is generating there, as well as in the high Heaven aloft above this World. Or doth thou think, that he departed and went away from his Seat where he did sit from Eternity, in or at the Time of the Creation of this World? O no; that cannot be, for though He could himself do so, He cannot do it, for He himself is All: And as little as a Member of the Body can be rent off from itself, so little can God also be divided, rent, or separated from being every where.

(8) O, thou Child of Man! open the Eyes of thy Spirit, for I will show thee here the right and real proper Gate of the Deity, as indeed that very one only God will have it.

(101) But if God did but once put away that Duskishness, which moves about the Light, and that thy Eyes were opened, then in that very Place where thou standest, sittest, or liest, thou shouldst see the glorious Countenance or Face of God and the whole heavenly Gate.

(21) But if thou lockest up thy soul within thy body, and dost debase it, saying: I nothing know; I nothing can; I fear the sea; I cannot scale the sky; I know not who I was, who I shall be - what is there [then] between [thy] God and thee? For thou canst know naught of things beautiful and good so long as thou dost love thy body and art bad. The greatest bad there is, is not to know God's Good; but to be able to know [Good], and will, and hope, is a Straight Way, the Good's own [Path], both leading there and easy. If thou but settest thy foot thereon, 'twill meet thee everywhere, 'twill everywhere be seen, both where and when thou dost expect it not - waking, sleeping, sailing, journeying, by night, by day, speaking, [and] saying naught. For there is naught that is not image of the Good.

(2) Be ye then not carried off by the fierce flood, but using the shore-current , ye who can, make for Salvation's port, and, harboring there, seek ye for one to take you by the hand and lead you unto Gnosis' gates. Where shines clear Light, of every darkness clean; where not a single soul is drunk, but sober all they gaze with their hearts' eyes on Him who willeth to be seen. No ear can hear Him, nor can eye see Him, nor tongue speak of Him, but [only] mind and heart. But first thou must tear off from thee the cloak which thou dost wear - the web of ignorance, the ground of bad, corruption's chain, the carapace of darkness, the living death, sensation's corpse, the tomb thou carriest with thee, the robber in thy house, who through the things he loveth, hateth thee, and through the things he hateth, bears thee malice.

(11) Now all that is engendered is imperfect, it is divisible, to increase subject and to decrease; but with the Perfect [One] none of these things doth hold. Now that which is increasable increases from the Oneness, but succumbs through its own feebleness when it no longer can contain the One. And now, O Tat, God's Image hath been sketched for thee, as far as it can be; and if thou wilt attentively dwell on it and observe it with thine heart's eyes, believe me, son, thou'lt find the Path that leads above; nay, that Image shall become thy Guide itself, because the Sight [Divine] hath this peculiar [charm], it holdeth fast and draweth unto it those who succeed in opening their eyes, just as, they say, the magnet [draweth] iron.

(70) But if thou in the Spirit breakest through the Death of the Flesh, then thou seest the hidden God. For as the Marrow in the Bones penetrates, presses or breaks through, and gives Virtue, Power and Strength to the Flesh, and yet the Flesh cannot comprehend or apprehend the Marrow, but only the Power and Virtue thereof, no more canst thou see the hidden Deity in thy Flesh, but thou receivest its Power, and understandest therein that God dwells in thee.

(130) thou wilt be such an eternal almighty God therein, as a Prisoner in a deep Prison or Dungeon, where thou wilt neither attain nor see the eternal Light of God. But the kindled bitter Wrath of God will be thy Grate, Bolts and Bounds, out of which thou canst never get.

(91) If thou climbest up this Ladder on which I climb up into the Deep of God, as I have done, then thou hast climbed well: I am not come to this Meaning, or to this Work and Knowledge through my own Reason, or through my own Will and Purpose; neither have I sought this Knowledge, nor so much as knew any Thing concerning it. I fought only for the Heart of God, therein to hide myself from the tempestuous Storms of the Devil.

(3) Above thyself thou art: for why, thou attainest to come thither by grace, whither thou mayest not come by nature. That is to say, to be oned to God, in spirit, and in love, and in accordance of will. Beneath thy God thou art: for why, although it may be said in manner, that in this time God and thou be not two but one in spirit—insomuch that thou or another, for such onehead that feeleth the perfection of this work, may soothfastly by witness of Scripture be called a God—nevertheless yet thou art beneath Him. For why, He is God by nature without beginning; and thou, that sometime wert nought in substance, and thereto after when thou wert by His might and His love made ought, wilfully with sin madest thyself worse than nought, only by His mercy without thy desert are made a God in grace, oned with Him in spirit without departing, both here and in bliss of heaven without any end. So that, although thou be all one with Him in grace, yet thou art full far beneath Him in nature.

(129) But when he is overcome, then the heavenly Gate opens in my Spirit, and then the Spirit sees the divine and heavenly Being; not externally without the Body, but in the Fountain or Well-spring of the Heart there rises up the Flash in the Sensibility or Thoughts of the Brain, and therein the Spirit does contemplate or meditate.
