(70) as it is written of him, "He is Wonderful, Counsel, Power, Champion, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace." [w Isaiah 9.]

(27) His Immensity, Height and Depth, no Creature, no not any Angel in Heaven, can search into it, but the Angels live in the Power of the Father very meekly, and full of Joy, and they always sing in the Power of the Father. Of GOD the SON.

(1) BUT since the theologians sing the Divine truth fulness and super-wise wisdom, both as power and as justice, and designate It preservation and redemption, come then, let us unfold these Divine Names also, as best we can. Now, that the Godhead is pre-eminent above, and surpasses every power, howsoever being and conceived, I do not suppose any of those nourished in the Divine Oracles does not know. For on many occasions the Word of God attributes the Lordship to It, even when distinguishing It from the supercelestial powers themselves. How then do the theologians sing it also as a Power, which is pre-eminent above every power? or how ought we to understand the name of power as applied to It?

(1) THE time, then, is come for our discourse, to sing the God of many Names, as "Sovereign Lord," and as "Ancient of days." For He is called the former, by reason that He is an all-controlling basis, binding and embracing the whole, and establishing and supporting, and tightening, and completing the whole. Continuous in itself, and from itself, producing the whole, as it were from a Sovereign root, and turning to itself the whole, as to a sovereign parent stock, and holding them together as an all-embracing basis of all, securing all the things embraced, within one grasp superior to all, and not permitting them, when fallen from itself to be destroyed, as moved from an all-perfect sanctuary. But the Godhead is called Sovereign, both as controlling and governing the members of His household, purely, and as being desired and beloved by all, and as placing upon all the voluntary yokes, and the sweet pangs of the Divine and Sovereign, and in dissolvable love of the Goodness itself,

(135) For his Circumference, Conception, or chiefest Mother, was the Son of God, and there he stood as a King or Prince of God.

(10) From the Theological Elements of the most holy Hierotheus. Deity of the Lord Jesus,-- the Cause and Completing of all, which preserves the parts concordant with the whole, and is neither part nor whole, and whole and part, as embracing in Itself everything both part and whole, and being above and before--is perfect indeed in the imperfect, as source of perfection, but imperfect in the perfect, as super-perfect, and pre-perfect--Form producing form, in things without form, as Source of form--formless in the forms, as above form,--Essence, penetrating without stain the essences throughout, and superessential, exalted above every essence--setting bounds to the whole principalities and orders, and established above every principality and order. It is measure also of things existing, and age, and above age, and before age--full, in things that need, super-full in things full, unutterable, unspeakable, above mind, above life, above essence. It has the supernatural, supernaturally,--the superessential, superessentially. Hence, since through love towards man, He has come even to nature, and really became substantial, and the Super-God lived as Man (may He be merciful with regard to the things we are celebrating, which are beyond mind and expression), and in these He has the supernatural and super-substantial, not only in so far as He communicated with us without alteration and without confusion, suffering no loss as regards His super-fulness, from His unutterable emptying of Himself--but also, because the newest of all new things, He was in our physical condition super-physical--in things substantial, super-substantial, excelling all the things--of us--from us--above us.

(87) Dread, invincible, great, deathless One, Whom Ether crowns."... By the expression "Sire of our Mother" mhtro patwr he not only intimates creation out of nothing, but gives occasion to those who introduce emissions of imagining a consort of the Deity. And he paraphrases those prophetic Scriptures - that in Isaiah, "I am He that fixes the thunder, and creates the wind; whose hands have rounded the host of heaven;" and that in Moses, "Behold, behold that I am He, and there is no god beside me: I will kill, and I will make to live; I will smite, and I will heal: and there is none that shall deliver out of my hands."

(8) For He was the Wisdom "in which" the Sovereign God "delighted." For the Son is the power of God, as being the Father's most ancient Word before the production of all things, and His Wisdom. He is then properly called the Teacher of the beings formed by Him. Nor does He ever abandon care for men, by being drawn aside from pleasure, who, having assumed flesh, which by nature is susceptible of suffering, trained it to the condition of impossibility.

(78) And the unfathomable Power and Light of the Son is in the Deep of the Father, a living, all-powerful, all-knowing, all-hearing, all-seeing, all-smelling, all-tasting, all-feeling Spirit, wherein is all Power, Splendor, and Wisdom, as in the Father and the Son.

(2) So the best thing on earth is the most pious man; and the best thing in heaven, the nearer in place and purer, is an angel, the partaker of the eternal and blessed life. But the nature of the Son, which is nearest to Him who is alone the Almighty One, is the most perfect, and most holy, and most potent, and most princely, and most kingly, and most beneficent. This is the highest excellence, which orders all things in accordance with the Father's will, and holds the helm of the universe in the best way, with unwearied and tireless power, working all things in which it operates, keeping in view its hidden designs. For from His own point of view the Son of God is never displaced; not being divided, not severed, not passing from place to place; being always everywhere, and being contained nowhere; complete mind, the complete paternal light; all eyes, seeing all things, hearing all things, knowing all things, by His power scrutinizing the powers. To Him is placed in subjection all the host of angels and gods; He, the paternal Word, exhibiting a the holy administration for Him who put [all] in subjection to Him.

(126) Thus the King or great Prince Michael looks like God the Father in his Glorification, Clarity, or Brightness, and is a King and Prince of God upon the Mount of God, and has his Office in the Deep wherein he is created.

(6) The theologians, having knowledge of this, celebrate It, both without Name and from every Name. Without name, as when they say that the Godhead Itself, in one of those mystical apparitions of the symbolical Divine manifestation, rebuked him who said, "What is thy name?" and as leading him away from all knowledge of the Divine Name, said this, "and why dost thou ask my Name? "and this (Name) "is wonderful," And is not this in reality the wonderful Name, that which is above every Name--the Nameless--that fixed above every name which is named, whether in this age or in that which is to come? Also, as "many named," as when they again introduce It as saying, "I am He, Who is--the Life--the Light--the God--the Truth." And when the wise of God themselves celebrate Him, as Author of all things, under many Names, from all created things--as Good--as Beautiful--as Wise--as Beloved--as God of gods--as Lord of lords--as Holy of Holies--as Eternal--as Being--as Author of Ages--as Provider of Life--as Wisdom--as Mind--as Word--as Knowing--as preeminently possessing all the treasures of all knowledge--as Power--as Powerful--as King of kings--as Ancient of days--as never growing old--and Unchangeable--as Preservation--as Righteousness--as Sanctification -- as Redemption--as surpassing all things in greatness--and as in a gentle breeze.--Yea, they also say that He is in minds, and in souls, and in bodies, and in heaven and in earth, and at once, the same in the same--in the world--around the world--above the world--supercelestial, superessential, sun, star--fire--water--spirit--dew--cloud--self-hewn stone and rock--all things existing--and not one of things existing.

(26) The Love, or Word, or Heart, that is, the innate or only begotten Son of the Father, who is the Light and Meekness, and the Love and Joy of the Deity; as he himself said, when he had assumed the Humanity, I am the Light of the World; he took the Place of this World by the Heart, and sate in the Midst or Center of this Space or Room, in that Place where the mighty Prince and King Lucifer did sit before his Fall, and there he was new born to be a Creature. [John 8. 12.]

(57) And this Being is not only so in one Place of the Father, but every where, in the whole Father, who has neither Beginning nor End; into which no Creature can reach with its Senses or Thoughts. Of the Nativities or Genitures of Angelical Kings, and how they come to be. ["This also is more fundamentally described in the Second and Third Book."]

(10) Now the energy of the Lord has a reference to the Almighty; and the Son is, so to speak, an energy of the Father. Therefore, a hater of man, the Saviour can never be; who, for His exceeding love to human flesh, despising not its susceptibility to suffering, but investing Himself with it, came for the common salvation of men; for the faith of those who have chosen it, is common. Nay more, He will never neglect His own work, because man alone of all the other living creatures was in his creation endowed with a conception of God. Nor can there be any other better and more suitable government for men than that which is appointed by God.

(60) as I have shown before, there are two Things especially to be observed in the Deep of God the Father; first, the Power, or all Powers of God the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, are very lovely, pleasant, and various, and yet are all One in another as one Power. And

(129) For this Prince is a Creature, and has a Beginning, but he is in God the Father, and is bound and united with him in his Love, as his dearly beloved Son, whom he has created out of himself.

(52) so the Son in the Father is a self-subsisting Person, and enlightens all the Powers in the Father, and is the Father’s Joy or Heart in his Centre, or in the Midst of him. Observe here the great Mystery of God.

(9) But here thou must not think, that the Powers in God the Father are in such wise, or qualify in such a corrupt Manner and Kind as in Man, which Lord Lucifer has so brought to pass; but it is all very lovely, pleasant, delicious and joyful, very gentle, and meek, or mild.

(119) The Meaning is not, that He is God the Father, who consists in the seven Spirits of the whole Deep, and is not creaturely; but the Meaning is, that in Nature among the Creatures there is also such a Kind of Creature, as is like God the Father, as he is in the seven qualifying or fountain Spirits, which is to reign among the Creatures. For when God made himself creaturely, then he made himself creaturely according to his Ternary: And as in God, the Ternary is the Ground and Object, and yet his wonderful Proportion, Form, and Variety, cannot be measured, in that he shows himself in his Operation so various and manifold; so also he has created three principal Angel-princes, according to the highest Primacy of his Ternary.
