(46) And though thy Body perhaps is put hard to it and suffers Pain and Misery, yet it is much worse with him when he is vanquished, for then he roars like a Lion which is robbed of her young Whelps, for the Fierceness and Wrath of God torments him; but if thou lettest him lodge within thee, then he grows fat and wanton, and will vanquish thee in time.

(35) if that will not succeed to his Purpose, then he strikes many a hard Blow at the Head, and that Man must continually lie under the Cross, Affliction, and Misery, in this World.

(25) Now, after that a man hath walked in all the ways that lead him unto the truth, and exercised himself therein, not sparing his labour; now, as often and as long as he dreameth that his work is altogether finished, and he is by this time quite dead to the world, and come out from Self and given up to God alone, behold! the Devil cometh and soweth his seed in the man’s heart. From this seed spring two fruits; the one is spiritual fulness or pride, the other is false, lawless freedom. These are two sisters who love to be together. Now, it beginneth on this wise: the Devil puffeth up the man, till he thinketh himself to have climbed the topmost pinnacle, and to have come so near to heaven, that he no longer needeth Scripture, nor teaching, nor this nor that, but is altogether raised above any need. Whereupon there ariseth a false peace and satisfaction with himself, and then it followeth that he saith or thinketh: “Yea, now I am above all other men, and know and understand more than any one in the world; therefore it is certainly just and reasonable that I should be the lord and commander of all creatures, and that all creatures, and especially all men, should serve me and be subject unto me.” And then he seeketh and desireth the same, and taketh it gladly from all creatures, especially men, and thinketh himself well worthy of all this, and that it is his due, and looketh on men as if they were the beasts of the field, and thinketh himself worthy of all that ministereth to his body and life and nature, in profit, or joy, or pleasure, or even pastime and amusement, and he seeketh and taketh it wherever he findeth opportunity.

(12) For it forsakes the Love, and hangs on Covetousness, Extortion and Bribery; there is no Mercy at all therein: Every one cries out, If I had but Money! Those that are in Authority and Power suck the very Marrow from the Bones of Men of low Degree and Rank, and feed upon the Sweat of their Brows. Briefly, there is nothing else but lying, cozening, robbing and murdering, and so may very justly be called the Devil's Nest and Dwelling-house.

(102) But when the Child rebels and resists against the Mother, and takes away all from the Mother, and domineers over her, and moreover strikes at her, and forces her to change into a low Condition, contrary to Right and Equity, then it is but just that the Child should be expelled out of the House, and left to sit behind the Hedge, and quite to lose its Child’s Portion and Inheritance. And

(11) Fasting proclaims that he abstains from lawful food, And his alms say, "He gives away his own goods; It is therefore plain that he does not rob others." If he acts thus from fraud, his two witnesses (Fasting and alms) are rejected in God's court; If the hunter scatters grain Not out of mercy, but to catch game; If the cat keeps fast, and remains still In fasting only to entrap unwary birds; Making hundreds of people suspicious,
