(4) I am coffined in an ark like Horus, to whom his cradle is brought: and secret is the place, hard by his own shrine, which the god openeth to whom he willeth

(6) Now in the place where Jesus was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

(29) Then consider Christ's Rest in the Grave, and thou shalt find the Ground; for the second Adam must (with his Resurrection out of the Grave) awaken [or raise] the first (out of his eternal Sleep of the Darkness of Hell) out of the Grave of this World again.

The Guide and I into that hidden road Now entered, to return to the bright world; And without care of having any rest We mounted up, he first and I the second, Till I beheld through a round aperture Some of the beauteous things that Heaven doth bear; Thence we came forth to rebehold the stars.

(31) Jesus cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said,

(6) All of their coverings uplifted were, And from them issued forth such dire laments, Sooth seemed they of the wretched and tormented. And I: "My Master, what are all those people Who, having sepulture within those tombs, Make themselves audible by doleful sighs?" And he to me: "Here are the Heresiarchs, With their disciples of all sects, and much More than thou thinkest laden are the tombs. Here like together with its like is buried; And more and less the monuments are heated." And when he to the right had turned, we passed Between the torments and high parapets.

(68) Therefore now the Question is, Where was the Soul of Christ all the Time that the Body did rest in the Grave? Beloved Reason, do not like those that are blind concerning God, who say, the Soul [of Christ] went away from the Body down into Hell into the Earth, and during that Time, in the divine Power and Virtue, assaulted the Devils in Hell, and bound them with Chains, and destroyed Hell. O, it is quite another Thing. The Saints rising out of the Graves at the Hour of the Death of Christ declares otherwise.

(3) Being a great center of pagan learning, Ephesus has been the locale for many early Christian myths. The assertion has been made that it was the last domicile of the Virgin Mary; also that the tomb of St. John the Divine was located there. According to legend, St. John did not depart from this life in the usual manner but, selecting his vault, entered it while still alive, and closing the entrance behind him, vanished forever from mortal sight. A rumor was current in ancient Ephesus that St. John would sleep in his tomb until the return of the Savior, and that when the apostle turned over on his sepulchral couch the earth above moved like the coverlets of a bed.

(1) the Tomb is opened to the Soul and to the Shade of the person, that he may come forth by day and may have mastery of his feet

(7) When Joseph had laid the body in his own new tomb which he had hewn out in the rock, he rolled a great stone, nigh at hand, to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

The symbolical teaching, then, reveals in mystery that the man baptized according to religious rites, imitates, so far as Divine imitation is attainable to men, by the three immersions in the water, the supremely Divine death of the Life-giving Jesus, Who spent three days and three nights in the tomb, in Whom, according to the mystical and secret teaching of the sacred text, the Prince of the world found nothing.

(22) Then Raphael answered, one of the holy angels who was with me, and said unto me: 'These hollow places have been created for this very purpose, that the spirits of the souls of the dead should assemble therein, yea that all the souls of the children of men should assemble here. And these places have been made

And I: "Good Leader, I but keep concealed From thee my heart, that I may speak the less, Nor only now hast thou thereto disposed me." "O Tuscan, thou who through the city of fire Goest alive, thus speaking modestly, Be pleased to stay thy footsteps in this place.
