The Conference of the Birds
The Seventeenth Bird Questions the Hoopoe (4)
A water-carrier, meeting another, asked him for some of his water. The latter said: 'O you who are ignorant of spiritual things, why don't you drink your own?' The first said: ' Give me some of your water, you who have spiritual knowledge, for I am sick of my own.' Adam was satiated with familiar things, and that is why he brought himself to take the wheat, a new thing for him. He sold the old things for a little wheat. He became oneeyed. Love came and knocked at the door for him. When he was completely destroyed in the lightning of love, both old and new things disappeared and nothing was left! But it is 'not given to everyone to be disgusted with himself and to die completely to his old life.
Chapter 10: Of the Creation of Man, and of his Soul, also of God's breathing in. The pleasant Gate. (20)

(20) If Adam had continued in Innocence, then he should in all Fruits have eaten paradisical Fruit, and his Food should have been heavenly, and his Drink [should have been] out of the Mother of the heavenly Water of the Source [or Fountain] of the eternal Life. The Out-Birth touched him not, the Element of Air he had no Need of in this Manner [as now;] it is true, he drew Breath from the Air, but he took his Breath from the Incorruptibility, for he did not mingle with the Spirit of this World, but his Spirit ruled powerfully over the Spirit of this World, over the Stars, and over the Sun and Moon, and over the Elements.
Chapter 21: Of the Cainish, and of the Abellish Kingdom; how they are both in one another. Also of their Beginning, Rise, Essence, and Purpose; and then of their last Exit. Also of the Cainish Antichristian Church, and then of the Abellish true Christian Church; how they are both in one another, and are very difficult to be known [asunder.] Also of the Variety of Arts, States, and Orders of this World. Also of the Office of Rulers [or Magistrates,] and their Subjects; how there is a good and divine Ordinance in them all, as also a false, evil, and devilish one. Where the Providence of God is seen in all Things; and the Devil 's Deceit, Subtilty, and Malice, [is seen also] in all Things. (10)

(10) For Adam was the Heart of every Thing in this World, created out of the Originality of all Things; his Soul was out of the first Principle, thoroughly illustrated with the second [Principle;] and his Body was out of the [one] Element, out of the eBarm, or Birth, out of the divine Virtue [which is] before God, which [Body] was entered into the Out-Birth of the [one] Element, viz. into the four Elements, and wholly gone into the Spirit of this World, viz. into the third Principle. And therefore he had the Tincture of every Thing in him, by which he reached into all Essences, and proved [or searched] all Things in the Heaven, Earth, Fire, Air, and Water, and all whatsoever is generated from thence. 1 1. And so one Tincture took hold of the other, and the Stronger has proved [or tried] the Weaker, and given Names to all Things, according to their Essences; and that is the true Ground of Adam's Fall, that he went out of the eternal [Being] into the Out-birth of the corruptible [Being,] and has put on the corruptible Image which God forbade him.

(5) And if the Soul had not been within it, then Adam should have continued to be an unreasonable Beast; but seeing the Soul out of the Limbus had been breathed into Adam by the Holy Ghost, therefore now the Mercifulness (viz. the Heart of God) must do its best again, and bring again the Center out of the heavenly Limbus, and himself become Flesh, and by the Fiat generate the new Man in the Soul, which is hidden in the old. For the old belongs only to the Corruptibility, and goes into its Ether, and the new remains for ever. But how this came to pass, you have the following fundamental Information of it, wherein if you be regenerated from God, you may see the old and new Man into the very Heart, because you have the Pearl; but if not, then you shall scarce see here the old Adam, and you shall not so much as look upon the new.

The human being Adam was revealed through the bright shadow within. And Adam’s ability to think was greater than that of all the creators. When they looked up, they saw that Adam’s ability to think was greater, and they devised a plan with the whole throng of rulers and angels. They took fire, earth, and water, and combined them with the four fiery winds. They wrought them together and made a great commotion. The rulers brought Adam into the shadow of death so that they might produce a figure again, from earth, water, fire, and the spirit that comes from matter, that is, from the ignorance of darkness, and desire, and their own false spirit. This is the cave for remodeling the body that these criminals put on the human, the fetter of forgetfulness. Adam became a mortal being, the first to descend and the first to become estranged. The enlightened afterthought within Adam, however, would rejuvenate Adam’s mind. They put their tree of life in the middle of paradise. I shall teach you the secret of their life, the plan they devised together, the nature of their spirit: The root of their tree is bitter, its branches are death, its shadow is hatred, a trap is in its leaves, its blossom is bad ointment, its fruit is death, desire is its seed, it blossoms in darkness. The dwelling place of those who taste of it is the underworld, and darkness is their resting place. But the rulers lingered in front of what they call the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which is the enlightened afterthought, so that Adam might not behold its fullness and recognize his shameful nakedness. But I was the one who induced them to eat. I said to the savior, Master, was it not the snake that instructed Adam to eat? The savior laughed and said, The snake instructed them to eat of the wickedness of sexual desire and destruction so that Adam might be of use to the snake. This is the one who knew Adam was disobedient because of the enlightened afterthought within Adam, which made Adam stronger of mind than the first ruler. The first ruler wanted to recover the power that he himself had passed on to Adam. So he brought deep sleep upon Adam. I said to the savior, What is this deep sleep? The savior said, It is not as Moses wrote and you heard. He said in his first book, He put Adam to sleep. Rather, this deep sleep was a loss of sense. Thus the first ruler said through the prophet, I shall make their minds sluggish, that they may neither understand nor discern.

(29) Reader, who lovest God; hereby it will be shown thee, that the great Mysteries meet us, concerning the hidden Things that were in Adam before his Fall, and that yet there are much greater after his Fall, when he was as it were dead, and yet living; and here is shown the Birth of the eternal Essence, and why it still must thus have been, that Adam must have been tempted, and wherefore it could not have been otherwise; though Reason continually a gainsays it, and alledges God's Omnipotence, that it was in him to hinder, or suffer the doing of it.
Chapter 4: Of the true Eternal Nature, that is, of the numberless and endless generating of the Birth of the eternal Essence, which is the Essence of all Essences; out of which were generated, born, and at length created, this World, with the Stars and Elements, and all whatsoever moves, stirs, or lives therein. (5) But the favourable Love, (that is, the only begotten Son of God, or that I may set it down so that it may be understood, the lovely Fountain where the Light of God is 1 generated,) sprung up, and grew again in Adam in the Center of the Birth of his Life, in the fifth Form of his Birth; whereby Adam perceived that he was not broken off from the divine Root, but that he was still the Child of God, and repented him of his first evil Lust: And thereupon the Lord showed him the Treader upon the Serpent, who should destroy his monstrous Birth; and so he should from the monstrous Birth be regenerated anew, in the Shape, Form, Power and Virtue of the Treader upon the Serpent, and be brought with Power again into Paradise, into the holy Birth, and eat of the mWord of the Lord again, and live eternally, in Spite of all the Gates of the Wrathfulness, wherein the Devil lives; concerning which there shall be farther mention made in its due Place.
Chapter 17: Of the horrible, lamentable, and miserable Fall of Adam and Eve in Paradise. Man 's Looking-Glass. (31)

(31) Adam was in an angelical Form before the Sleep; but after the Sleep he had Flesh and Blood; and he was (in his Flesh) a Lump of Earth, and he saw from a threefold Spirit. With his Eyes he apprehended the Light of the Sun, and knew the first Image no more; although the four Elements had not yet fallen upon him, nor touched him; for he was yet in Innocence.

(42) And the Adam replies: "Many times have I stood within this courtyard and begged admission to my Father's house and thou hast refused it me and sent me back to wander in darkness. True it is that I was fashioned out of the dirt and that my Maker could not confer upon me the boon of immortality. But no more shalt thou send me away; for, wandering in the darkness, I have discovered that the Almighty hath decreed my salvation because He hath sent out of the most hidden Mystery His Only Begotten who didst take upon Himself the world fashioned by the Demiurgus. Upon the elements of that world was He crucified and from Him hath poured forth the blood of my salvation. And God, entering into His creation, hath quickened it and established therein a road that leadeth to Himself. While my Maker could not give me immortality, immortality was inherent in the very dust of which I was composed, for before the world was fabricated and before the Demiurgus became the Regent of Nature the Eternal Life had impressed itself upon the face of Cosmos. This is its sign--the Cross. Do you now deny me entrance, I who have at last learned the mystery of myself?"

(49) Now then when we consider the high Mysteries, the Spirit opens to us the Understanding, that this [before-mentioned] is the true Ground concerning Adam: For his original Spirit (viz. the Soul) that was the Worm, which was generated out of the eternal Will of God the Father, and in the Time of the Creation The Son of God. was by the Fiat (after the Manner of a Spirit) created out of that Place where the Father from Eternity generates his Heart, between the fourth and fifth Form in the Center of God, where the Light of God from Eternity discovers itself, and takes its Beginning, and therefore the Light of God came thus to help him, as a fair Virgin, and took the Soul to be her Bridegroom, and would adorn the Soul with her fair heavenly Crown, with the noble Virtue of the Pearl, and beautify it with her Garment.
Chapter 17: Of the horrible, lamentable, and miserable Fall of Adam and Eve in Paradise. Man 's Looking-Glass. (56)

(56) And now when Adam awaked from Sleep, then he was a Man, and no Angel; he drew Breath from the Air, and therewith kindled his starry Spirit, which had taken Possession of him; he knew his Wife to be a Woman, and that she was taken out of him, and took her to him, as all Beasts couple together; yet he had pure Eyes, for the Fierceness [or grim Wrath] did not yet stick in them, but the Infection [or Longing.] The Element of Fire with its Bitterness (which qualifies, [or mixes Properties] with the Abyss of Hell) had not pressed him wholly.

(11) Seeing Adam was created an Image and whole Similitude of God, and had all three Principles in him like God himself, therefore also his Mind and Imagination should merely have looked into the Heart of God, and should have set his Lust and [Desire, or] Will thereon; and as he was a Lord over all, and that his Mind was a threefold Spirit, in three Principles in one only Essence, so his Spirit also, and the Will in the Spirit, should have stood open [or free] in one only Essence, viz. in the paradisical heavenly [Essence.] And his Mind and Soul should have eaten of the Heart of God, and his Body [should have eaten] of the heavenly Limbus.
THE COSMIC RULERS MOLD ADAM (THE COSMIC RULERS MOLD ADAM)

At that time the chief creator then expressed his opinion about humankind to those who were with him. Then each of them cast his seed into the midst of the navel of the earth. Since that day, the seven rulers have formed humankind with his body like their body, but his likeness is like the human who appeared to them. His fashioned body came into being one part at a time, and their chief created the brain and nervous system. Afterward the person appeared like the one before him. He became a person with soul, and he was called Adam, that is, father, after the name of the one who was before him. Now, after Adam was made, he left him as a lifeless vessel, since he had taken form like an aborted fetus, with no spirit in him. Regarding this, when the chief ruler remembered the word of Pistis, he was afraid that the true human might come into his fashioned body and rule over it. Because of this, he left this fashioned body forty days without soul. And he withdrew and left him. But on the fortieth day Sophia Zoe sent her breath into Adam, who was without soul. He began to move upon the earth, but he could not stand up. Now, when the seven rulers came and saw him, they were very much disturbed. They walked up to him and seized him, and the chief ruler said to the breath within him, “Who are you? And from where have you come here?” It answered and said, “I came through the power of the human for the destruction of your work.” When they heard, they glorified him because he gave them rest from their fear and concern. Then they called that day the day of rest, because they rested themselves from their troubles. And when they saw that Adam could not stand up, they rejoiced. They took him and left him in paradise and withdrew up to their heavens.

(17) But when the chaste Virgin found herself thus in Adam with great Wisdom, Meekness, and Humility, then the outward Elements became lusting after the eternal, that they might raise themselves up in the chaste Virgin, and qualify in her; seeing that Adam was extracted out of them, [viz. the four Elements,] out of the Quinta Essentia, therefore they desired their own, and would qualify therein, which yet God did forbid to Adam, [saying,] that he should not eat of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, but live in [the] one [only Element,] and be contented with Paradise.

Adam’s soul came from a breath. The soul’s companion is spirit, and the spirit given to him is his mother. His soul was [taken] from him and replaced with [spirit]. (8) Besides, if Adam had eaten earthly Fruit, he must then have eaten it into his Body, and have had Guts [or Entrails:] And how could such a Stink [and Dung] (as we now carry in the Body) have been in Paradise in the Holiness of God? Moreover, he should by eating earthly Food, have eaten of the Fruit of the Stars and Elements, which would presently have infected [or qualified] in him, as was done in the Fall; also so his Fear over all the Beasts would have ceased. For the Essences of the Beasts would presently have been like the human Essences in Virtue [and Power,] and one would have domineered more strongly over the other.

(146) So it goes also in the soul, when it presseth or breaks quite through in its flight or combat, then it beholdeth the Deity, as a flash of lightning; but the source, quality or fountain of sins covereth it suddenly again: For the Old Adam belongeth to the earth, and does not, with this flesh, belong to the Deity.

(5) Adam possessed that union with God which we have spoken of, and while he had it, his capacity contained the capacities of all creatures. The load-stone attracts the needle, and the needle receives the magnetic power, so that it can also attract other needles and draw them to the load-stone. But if one draws the first needle away, all the other needles come with it. Thus was it with Adam: when, in his highest capacity, he was separated from God all his capacities deteriorated. Thence came also discord and the clashing of oppugnant wills among the lower creation, and deterioration of their powers down to the lowest. It is necessary, therefore, for all the creatures which issued forth from God to co-operate earnestly with all their powers to form a Man who may again attain that union with God which Adam enjoyed before he fell, and who may again restore to the creatures their forfeited powers.
This is fulfilled in Christ as He Himself said, "I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto Me." He means, if He is exalted in our knowledge, He will draw us unto Himself. In Him human nature grew divine, and thanked God and loved Him with immeasurable love. This also befits God that he loves human nature with so great love. I counsel you, sisters and brothers, that you grow in knowledge, and thank God, while you are in time, that He brought you out of non-existence to existence, and united you with the Divine Nature. But if the Divine Nature be beyond your comprehension, believe simply on Christ; follow His holy example and remain steadfast. Convert Jews, heathen, heretics, bad Christians, and all who do not enjoy your knowledge of God, and are still astray.

(6) The Vail of Moses must be done away, and you must look Moses in the Face, if you behold the new Man; and without the Pearl, you shall not be able to take away the Vail, nor know [what] Adam [was] before his Fall. For Adam himself after the Fall did no more know the first Man; and therefore he was ashamed of his monstrous Form [or Shape] and hid himself behind the Trees in the Garden; for he looked on himself, and saw that he had a bestial Form, and thereupon he got instantly bestial Members for Propagation, which the Fiat in the third Principle created on him, through the Spirit of the great World.

(38) Thus, my beloved Reason, I have set a Gloss before you, and thus it was with Adam. God had created his Work wisely and good, and extracted the one out of the other. The first Ground was himself, out of which he created the World, and out of the World [he created] Man, to whom he gave his Spirit, and intimated to him, that without Wavering, or any other Desire, he should live in him most perfectly.
Chapter 14: Of the Birth and Propagation of Man. The very Secret Gate. (3)

(3) You must not so understand it, as if it were extinguished in itself: No; but the Soul of Adam went out from the Principle of God, into the Principle of this World; and therein now the Spirit of every Soul is thus generated again by human Propagation, as is mentioned before, and it cannot be otherwise. And therefore if we would be fit for the Kingdom of Heaven, we must be regenerated anew in the Spirit of God, or else none can inherit the Kingdom of God, as Christ taught us faithfully; of which I will write hereafter, that it may be a Fountain for the Thirsty, and a Light to the noble Way, in the Blossom of the Lily.
