(49) And all Israel was eating the flesh of the paschal lamb, and drinking the wine, and was lauding and blessing, and giving thanks to the Lord God of their fathers, and was ready to go forth from under the yoke of Egypt, and from the evil bondage.

(60) a Samaritan carrying a lamb on his way to Judea. He said to his disciples, "(Why does) that man (carry) the lamb around?" They said to him, "So that he may kill it and eat it." He said to them, "While it is alive, he will not eat it, but only when he has killed it and it has become a corpse." They said to him, "He cannot do so otherwise." He said to them, "You too, look for a place for yourself within the Repose, lest you become a corpse and be eaten."

(32) And he tithed all t lie clean animals, and made a burnt sacrifice, but ic unclean animals he gave (not) to Levi his son, and he gave him all the souls of the men.

(6) And he placed the fat thereof on the aitar, and he took an ox, and a goat, and a sheep and kids, and salt, and a turtle-dove, and the young of a dove, and placed a burnt sacrifice on the altar, and poured thereon an offering mingled with oil, and sprinkled wine and strewed frankincense over everything, and caused a goodly savour to arise, acceptable before the Lord.

(100) They showed Jesus a gold coin and said to Him, "Caesar's men demand taxes from us." He said to them, "Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar, give God what belongs to God, and give Me what is Mine."

(18) And he said, " God will provide for himself a sheep for a burnt-offering, my son." And he drew near to the place of the mount of God.

(37) And he said unto them " Because I sold my birthright to Jacob for a small mess of lentils ; and on the day my father sent me to hunt and catch and bring him something thathe should eat and bless me, he came with guile and brought my father food and drink, and my father blessed him and put me under his hand.

(15) And he offered new offerings on the altar, the first-fruits of the produce, unto the Lord, an heifer and a goat and a sheep on the altar as a burnt sacrifice unto the Lord ; their fruit-offerings and their drink-offerings he offered upon the altar with frankincense.

(29) And now also the whole economy which prophesied of the Lord appears indeed a parable to those who know not the truth, when one speaks and the rest hear that the Son of God - of Him who made the universe - assumed flesh, and was conceived in the virgin's womb (as His material body was produced), and subsequently, as was the case, suffered and rose again, being "to the Jews a stumbling-block, and to the Greeks foolishness," as the apostle says.

(7) And he prepared the kid first, and placed some of its blood on the flesh that was on the altar which he had made, and all the ; m fathe laid on the altar where he made the burnt sacrifice, and the ox and the ram and the sheep, and he laid all their flesh upon the altar.

(49) And they shall not cook it with water, nor shall they eat it raw, but roast on the fire : they shall eat it with diligence, its head with the inwards thereof and its feet they shall roast with fire, and not break any bone thereof; for fof the children of Israel no bone shall be crushed j .•

(6) And do thou command the children of Israel to eat no blood, so that their names and their seed may be before the Lord our God continually.

(84) And I lifted up my hands in righteousness and blessed the Holy and Great One, and spake with the breath of my mouth, and with the tongue of flesh, which God has made for the children of the flesh of men, that they should speak therewith, and He gave them breath and a tongue and a mouth that they should speak therewith:

(14) Now says Reason; That was another Body, in another Blood, and not his own creaturely Body. Prithee Reason tell me, how can it be another Body? Indeed it is in another Principle, but of no other Creature. Did not Christ say, / am not of this World? And yet he was really, according to the outward Man, of this World. Or dost thou understand it only of his Deity? What becomes then of his eternal Humanity, according to which he was a King of the Promise upon the Throne of David? If the Promise had been able to ransom us, then the Work need not have followed; and Moses likewise had been able to have brought the People of Israel into the true promised Land; which verily Joshua (who was a Type of this Christ) could not do, but he brought them only into the Land of the Heathen, where there was continually War and Strife; and it was only a Valley of Misery.

(3) And He sent out of the Garden of Eden all flesh that was in the Garden of Eden, and all flesh was scattered according to its kinds, and according to its types unto the places which had been created for them.

(1) And when the disciples had heard this, they fell down, adored him and said: "Help us now, Lord, and have mercy upon us, in order that we may be preserved from these wicked chastisements which are prepared for the sinners. Woe unto them, woe unto the children of men! For they grope as the blind in the darkness and see not. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, in this great blindness in which we are. And have mercy upon the whole race of men; for they have lain in wait for their souls, as lions for their prey, making it [ sc. the prey] ready as food for their [ sc. the rulers'] chastisements because of the forgetfulness and unknowing which is in them. Have mercy then upon us, our Lord, our Saviour, have mercy upon us and save us in this great stupefaction."

(43) And they said unto him : " God forbid that thy servants should do this thing, and steal from the house of thy lord any utensil, and the money also which we found in our sacks the first time, we thy servants brought back from the land of Canaan.

(44) For thou canst not say (when thou dost handle the blessed Bread) Here I hold the Body of Christ in my Hand, I can feel and taste it: No, my Friend, the outward is earthly Bread, from the outward Element; and the Incomprehensible in the holy Element is the Body of Christ, which (in this his Covenant and Testament) is offered to thee under the outward Bread, and that [Body] thy new Man receives; and the old [Man receives] the Bread; and so it is with the Wine.

(11) If, then, "the milk" is said by the apostle to belong to the babes, and "meat" to be the food of the full-grown, milk will be understood to be catechetical instruction - the first food, as it were, of the soul. And meat is the mystic contemplation; for this is the flesh and the blood of the Word, that is, the comprehension of the divine power and essence. "Taste and see that the Lord is Christ," it is said. For so He imparts of Himself to those who partake of such food in a more spiritual manner; when now the soul nourishes itself, according to the truth-loving Plato. For the knowledge of the divine essence is the meat and drink of the divine Word. Wherefore also Plato says, in the second book of the Republic, "It is those that sacrifice not a sow, but some great and difficult sacrifice," who ought to inquire respecting God. And the apostle writes, "Christ our passover was sacrificed for us;" - a sacrifice hard to procure, in truth, the Son of God consecrated for us.

(18) And Isaac said to his father, " Father " ; and he said, " Here am I, my son." And he said unto him, " Behold the fire, and the knife, and the wood ; but where is the sheep for the burnt-offering, father? "
