(41) And do thou command the children of Israel that there be no uncleanness amongst them, for every one who lieth with his daughter-in-law or with his mother-in-law hath wrought uncleanness ; with fire let them burn the man who hath lain with her, and likewise the woman, and He will turn away wrath and punishment from Israel.

(41) And Judah went to the house of her father, and said unto her father and her brothers : " Bring her forth, and let them burn her, for she hath wrought unclean- ness in Israel."

(2) Declare and say to the children of Israel the law of this day both that they should keep Sabbath thereon, and that they should not forsake it in the error of their hearts; (and) that it is not lawful to do any work there- on which is unseemly, to do thereon their own pleasure,* and that they should not prepare thereon anything to be eaten or drunk, jand (that it is not lawful) to draw water, or bring in or take out thereon through their gates any burden, | which they had not 1 viz. the Sabbath. * viz. Jacob. after their oyon pleasure above. For the law about " bringing in or taking out . . . any burden " on the Sabbath, cf. ii. ,

(49) And the man who is free from uncleanness, and doth not come to observe it on occasion of its day, so as to bring an acceptable offering before the Lord, and to eat and to drink before the Lord on the day of its festival, that man who is clean and close at hand will be cut off ; because he offered not the oblation of the Lord in its appointed season, he will take the guilt upon himself.

(33) For to no man who doeth so in Israel is it permitted to remain alive a single day on the earth, for he is abominable and unclean.

(15) And every one that is born, the flesh of whose foreskin is not circumcised on * the eighth day, belongeth not to the children of the covenant which the Lord made with Abraham, but to the children of destruction ; nor is there, moreover, any sign on him thathe is the Lord's, but (he is destined) to be destroyed and slain from the earth, and to be rooted out of the earth, for he hath broken the covenant of the Lord our God.

(20) And if any woman or maid commit fornication amongst you, burn her with fire,* and let them not commit fornication with her after their eyes and their heart ; and let them not take to them- selves wives from the daughters of Canaan ; for the seed of Canaan will be rooted out of the land.

(50) And every man who doeth any work thereon, or goeth a journey, or tilleth (his) farm, whether in his house or any other place, and whoever lighteth a fire, or rideth on any beast, or travelleth by ship on the sea, and whoever striketh or killeth anything, or slaughter- ed a beast or a bird, or whoever catcheth an animal or a bird or a fish, or whoever fastcth or maketh war on the Sabbaths :

(48) 1 say not that thou receivest the Wrath of God in the Bread and in the Wine, but in thy false Confidence; thou art with thy Body and Soul in the Anger, and wilt not go out from it. Why then dost thou approach often to the Covenant of God, seeing thou art captivated of the Devil? Dost thou think that he will adorn thy Hypocrisy, and will hang his Pearl on thee? Thou art a Wolf, and howlest with the Dogs; thy Mouth prays, and thy Soul is abominably wicked [and naught;] when it goes from the Testament of Christ, it enters into the Stall of Robbery again, and is a Murderer; it howls with the Dogs; it is a bGod. perfidious Whore; when it goes away from the Covenant, it steps into whorish Corners, into the Den of Thieves; and there they stand, and pretend great Holiness. O, this Day is a holy Day to me, I must not sin; and yet they think, Tomorrow or next Day, they will go thither again.

(30) And let not an adulteress and no uncleanness be found in Israel throughout all the days of the generations of the earth ; for Israel is holy unto the Lord, and every man who hath defiled (it) shall surely die : they shall stone him with stones.

(15) Thy proud Horse [or Beast,] thou shameful Whore, shall ride no longer alone over the bended Knees; in that Time it will no more be said, The Power [Might or Authority] sticks in my Chest of Money; that Mineral [or Metal] becomes a Blossom in the Light; and the Tincture stands in the Blossom of the Lily; Stones are of as much worth [as that Metal is;] the Clothing of the Virgin is brighter than thy Pride. How finely does the Ornament of this World stand on Modesty and the Fear of God, if the Heart be humble? How does thy silken and golden Clothes adorn thee? Dost thou not appear in God's Deeds of Wonder? Who will call thee a false Woman, if thou be so very chaste? Dost thou not stand to the Honour of the Great God? Art thou not his Work of Wonder? Is there not a friendly laughter before thee? Who can say that thou art a wrathful Woman? Thy modest Countenance shines over Mountains and Valleys. Art thou not at the End of the World, and [will not] thy Glance [or Luster] be espied in Paradise? Wherefore stands thy Mother in Babel, and so very malicious? O! thou shameful Whore; get thee out, for Babel is % on Fire, or else thou wilt be burnt thyself.

(25) I swear' before thee, mother, that all the days of my life I will not take me a wife from the daughters of the seed of Canaan, and I will not act wickedly as my brother hath done.

(50) The man who doetli any of these things on the Sabbath shall die, so that the children of Israel shall observe the Sabbaths accord- ing to the commandments regarding the Sabbaths of the land, as it is written in the tables, which He gave into my hands that I should write out for thee t lie laws of the seasons, and the seasons according to the division of their days. 6 Forbidden; Exod. xxxv. ; cf. Num. xv. f. Forbidden by the Jewish oral law.

(50) Ye shall do no work whatever on the Sabbath day save that honour which the Lord hath given to Israel that they should eat and drink and be satisfied on this festival clay, and rest thereon from all labour * which belongeth to the labour of the children of men, save burning frankincense and bringing oblations and sacrifices before the Lord for days and for Sabbaths. II. This work alone shall be done on the Sabbath-days in the sanctuary of the Lord your God ; that they may atone for Israel with sacrifice continually from day to day for a memorial well-pleasing before the Lord, and that He may receive them always from day to day according as thou hast been commanded.

(11) Condescends to entreaties, how is it then? She who subdues us with her pride and severity, What plea is left us when she begins to plead? When she who traded in naught but bloodshed Submits at last, ah! what a profit she makes! God has adorned them "fair in the sight of men;" From her whom God has adorned how can man escape? Since He created him "to dwell together with her," How can Adam sever himself from his Eve? Though he be Rustum, son of Zal, and braver than Hamza,

(14) Marriage to her was a calamity. To be subjected, then, to the passions, and to yield to them, is the extremest slavery; as to keep them in subjection is the only liberty. The divine Scripture accordingly says, that those who have transgressed the commandments are sold to strangers, that is, to sins alien to nature, till they return and repent. Marriage, then, as a sacred image, must be kept pure from those things which defile it. We are to rise from our slumbers with the Lord, and retire to sleep with thanksgiving and prayer,- "Both when you sleep, and when the holy light comes," confessing the Lord in our whole life; possessing piety in the soul, and extending self-control to the body. For it is pleasing to God to lead decorum from the tongue to our actions. Filthy speech is the way to effrontery; and the end of both is filthy conduct.

(9) He has her turn her face from her people and the gang of her adulterers with whom she had mingled, to devote herself now to her king, her real lord, and to forget the house of the earthly father with whom things were bad for her, and remember her father in heaven. So Abraham was told,

(23) But seeing thou knowest it, and dost it not, and the others know it not, but yet do it, they, with their doing, judge thy knowledge; and thou art found to be a hypocrite, a dissembler, and an unprofitable servant, who wert put into the vineyard of the Lord, and wilt not work therein.

(87) But thou abominable antichristian Beast, that wouldst devour all, this thou shalt know concerning the Holiness of the Virgin Mary; that the Virgin Mary is higher, and has a greater Fulness of the Glance [or Luster] than another Child, out of another Body. Though (thou evil Beast) art scarce worthy to have this told thee, thou art such a Devourer, yet because the Four Elements. Counsel of God has concluded so, mit shall stand for a Witness against thee in thy Judgment.

(17) And God said to Abraham " Let it not be grievous in thy sight, because of the child and because of the bondwoman ; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken to her words and do (them) ; for in Isaac shall thy name and seed be called. * But as for the son of this bondwoman I will make him a great7 nation, because he is of thy seed."
