(14) And he awoke from his sleep, and he arose, and the sun had set ; and there was a flame, and behold a furnace was smoking, and a flame of fire passed between the pieces.

(14) A flaming fire surrounded the walls, and its portals blazed with fire.

(32) And when the fire had con- sumed it, he burnt incense on the fire over the fire, and for a thank-offering two oxen and four rams and four sheep, four he-goats, and two sheep of a year old, and two kids of the goats ; and thus he did daily for seven days.

(133) They made ready for the feast, at the banquet [they sat

(71) And my spirit saw the girdle which girt that house of fire, And on its four sides were streams full of living fire, And they girt that house.

(18) And he took the wood of the burnt -offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife, and they went both of them together to that place.

(153) Thus now the heat kindled the dried water, and the light could no more elevate and kindle itself, for the water was dried up, and was quite consumed by the fire or great heat.

(13) Afterwards, in another thirty days and nights they came to a sheep, fat and white-jawed, and they slaughtered it; and fire was extracted by them out of the wood of the lote-plum and box-tree, through the guidance of the heavenly angels, since both woods were most productive of fire for them; and the fire was stimulated by their mouths; and the first fuel kindled by them was dry grass, kendâr, lotos, date palm leaves, and myrtle; and they made a roast of the sheep.

(133) There is fire even in a stone, and if you do not strike upon the stone, the fire remaineth hidden, but if you strike it, then the fire springs forth; and then, if any combustible matter be near it, that matter will take fire and burn, and so it cometh to be a huge fire; and thus it is with man also, when he kindleth the resting wrath-fire, which otherwise is at rest. (14) The flaming fire was round about Him, and a great fire stood before Him, and none around could draw nigh Him: ten thousand times ten thousand (stood) before Him, yet He needed no counselor.

(7) 'Fire enters into the houses, when a Brâhmana enters as a guest. That fire is quenched by this peace-offering;--bring water, O Vaivasvata!

(42) And he sent him into his house and he brought forth Simeon unto them and he made a feast for them, and they presented to him the gift which they had brought in their hands.

(58) But when the fire tasteth the mild, sweet and pliant taste, then is it mitigated and formeth itself into a meek warmth, very lovingly, and there riseth up a very friendly life in the fire, and penetrateth the astringent quality with this pleasing, lovely, gentle warmth, and allayeth or stilleth the cold fire, and mollifieth or suppleth the hardness, attenuateth the thick, and makes the dark to be light.

(14) And its floor was of fire, and above it were lightnings and the path of the stars, and its ceiling also was flaming fire.

(98) For it must be a middle or mild fire; to keep the spirit in the heart from rising it must be gently simmering, then it getteth a very sweet and meek ringing sound, and continually rejoiceth, as if it would now be kindled again in the light of God.

(139) Now it burneth jointly or equally alike in all the qualities of the kindled fire, and the fire burneth forth from the qualities; for all qualities burn, and that fire is one fire, and not many several fires.

(45) But what is the Fire? First, there is the Darkness, the Hardness, the eternal Cold, and the Dryness, where there is nothing else but an eternal Hunger. Then how comes the Fire to be? Dear Soul, here [in the Fire's coming to be] the Spirit of God (viz. the eternal Light) comes to help the Hunger; for the Hunger exists also from the Light: Because the divine Virtue beholds itself in the Darkness, therefore the Darkness is desirous [and longing] after the Light; and the Desiring is the Will.

(11) They say, accordingly, that the blessed Peter, on seeing his wife led to death, rejoiced on account of her call and conveyance home, and called very encouragingly and comfortingly, addressing her by name, "Remember thou the Lord." Such was the marriage of the blessed and their perfect disposition towards those dearest to them.

(13) And he built an altar there, and he offered thereon a burnt sacrifice to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Everyone who [enters] the bedchamber will kindle the [light. This is] like marriages that occur [in secret and] take place at night. The light of the fire [shines] during the night and then goes out. The mysteries of that marriage, however, are performed in the day and the light, and neither that day nor its light ever sets. If someone becomes an attendant of the bridal chamber, that person will receive the light. If one does not receive it while here in this place, one cannot receive it in the other place. Those who receive the light cannot be seen or grasped. Nothing can trouble such people even while they are living in this world. And when they leave this world, they have already received truth through images, and the world has become the eternal realm. To these people the eternal realm is fullness. This is the way it is. It is revealed to such a person alone, hidden not in darkness and night but hidden in perfect day and holy light.
