(86) Now being thus agreed, they generated also such a spirit, which came forth at the mouth, at the eyes, at the ears, and at the nostrils, and affected or mixed itself with the Salitter that was without, distinct from the body.

(10) For they were not new spirits made of any new thing, but they were the old spirits, which had no beginning, which had been in God from eternity, and they knew very well the right of the Deity and the right of nature, and how they [the spirits] should move and stir.

(2) "And the voice of the word was heard saying through the majesty of the unconceived spirit, 'Look, the power has been completed. The one who was revealed by me appeared in the spirit.'

(43) And he said to me: 'The Lord of Spirits hath showed thee their parabolic meaning (lit. 'their parable'): these are the names of the holy who dwell on the earth and believe in the name of the Lord of Spirits for ever and ever.'

(85) But seeing it [The astringent or harsh spirit] could not do anything alone, it flattered and played the hypocrite with the other spirits, so that they followed it as their father, and did all that they saw it do, each in its own quality.

(2) Ensample of this mayest thou see, by that that I bid thee hide thy desire from God in that that in thee is. For peradventure an I had bidden thee shew thy desire unto God, thou shouldest have conceived it more bodily than thou dost now, when I bid thee hide it. For thou wottest well, that all that thing that is wilfully hidden, it is cast into the deepness of spirit. And thus me thinketh that it needeth greatly to have much wariness in understanding of words that be spoken to ghostly intent, so that thou conceive them not bodily but ghostly, as they be meant: and specially it is good to be wary with this word in, and this word up. For in misconceiving of these two words hangeth much error, and much deceit in them that purpose them to be ghostly workers, as me thinketh. Somewhat wot I by the proof, and somewhat by hearsay; and of these deceits list me tell thee a little as me thinketh.

(22) I saw the spirits of the children of men who were dead, and their voice went forth to heaven and made suit.

(91) They said to Him, "Tell us who You are so that we may believe in You." He said to them, "You read the face of the sky and of the earth, but you have not recognized the one who is before you, and you do not know how to read this moment."

(14) And I will show (thee, simple Man) their Venom and Poison; for behold, every one among the Laity looks upon them, and thinks, Sure it must needs be right if our Priest says it; he is a Minister of God; he sits in God's Stead, it is the Holy Ghost that speaks out of him. But Saint John says, Try the spirits; for every one's Teaching is not to be believed; and Christ says, By their Works thou shalt know them; for a good Tree brings forth good Fruit, and an evil Tree brings forth evil Fruit; also he teaches us plainly, that we should not gainsay the Prophecy that is of God, but we should learn to try them by their Fruits.

(163) Here the spirit went forth, and as he was generated in the heart, so he went forth now at the mouth; but how welcome a guest he was before God, and in God, also before the holy angels of the other kingdoms, I leave to thee to consider of.

(3) For by nature they be ordained, that with them men should have knowing of all outward bodily things, and on nowise by them come to the knowing of ghostly things. I mean by their works. By their failings we may, as thus: when we read or hear speak of some certain things, and thereto conceive that our outward wits cannot tell us by no quality what those things be, then we may be verily certified that those things be ghostly things, and not bodily things.

(43) Now when I write of the animated soulish spirit, then you must exactly know what it is, or how it is, else thou wilt read this birth or geniture [Or nativity] in vain, and it will happen to thee as it did to the wise Heathen, who climbed up to the very face or countenance of God, but could not see it.

(66) When the light riseth up, then one spirit seeth another.

(43) They saw very well that the animated or soulish spirit qualified, mixed or operated with the heart of God; and thereupon they were resolved they would elevate and kindle themselves, hoping to be as bright, illustrious, deep and almighty as the deepest ground in the centre of the heart of God.

(13) In this light my spirit suddenly saw through all, and in and by all the creatures, even in herbs and grass it knew God, who he is, and how he is, and what his will is: And suddenly in that light my will was set on by a mighty impulse, to describe the being of God.

(43) And he ran after them and said unto them according to these words.

(27) And then God confounded their Language, that they might yet see that they had only confounded Senses [or Thoughts,] and should turn them to God; that they also might see that they did not understand the Language of the Saints [or holy People,] of the Stock of Shem; and that they must be scattered abroad over the whole World, so that a holy Seed might be preserved, and that all might not perish; but it availed not, they were wicked.

(77) These spirits, thus incorporated or compacted together, had the knowledge, the skill and the eternal, infinite and unbeginning law of God, and knew full well, I. How the Deity had generated them.

(14) The power questioned the soul, saying, Where are you going? In wickedness are you bound. But you are bound; do not judge!

(5) And they raised their eyes and saw a great, exceedingly mighty light, which no man in the world can describe. He said unto them anew: "Look away out of the light and see what ye may see." They said: "We see fire, water, wine and blood."
