On the coffins the invocation is addressed not to “Osiris, Lord of Light” or “Radiant One” , but to the , “one whose head is clothed with radiant white, of the House of Darkness and Obscurity.”

(55) Osiris is often represented with the lower par, of his body enclosed in a mummy case or wrapped about with funeral bandages. Man's spirit consists of three distinct parts, only one of which incarnates in physical form. The human body was considered to be a tomb or sepulcher of this incarnating spirit. Therefore Osiris, a symbol of the incarnating ego, was represented with the lower half of his body mummified to indicate that he was the living spirit of man enclosed within the material form symbolized by the mummy case.

(412) 721 To say: The Great One is fallen on his side; 721 he who is in Ndi.t stirs; 721 his head is lifted up by R`; 721 his abomination is to sleep, he hates to be tired. 722 Flesh of N., 722 rot not, decay not, let not thy smell be bad. 722 Thy foot shall not pass over, thy step shall not stride through, 722 thou shalt not tread upon the (corpse)-secretion of Osiris. 723 Thou shalt tiptoe heaven like (the toe-star); thy soul shall be pointed like Sothis (the pointed-star). 723 Soul shalt thou be and soul thou art; honoured shalt thou be and honoured thou art. 723 Thy soul stands there (like a king(?)) among the gods, like Horus who lives in 'Irw. 724 Thy dread gets into the heart of the gods, 724 like (the dread) of the red crown which is on the head of the king of Lower Egypt, like the white crown which is on the head of the king of Upper Egypt, 724 like the lock (of hair) which is upon the head of Mnti.w. 724 Thou layest hold of the hand (lit. arm) of the imperishable stars. 725 Thy bones will not be destroyed; thy flesh will not sicken, N.; 725 thy limbs will not be distant from thee, 725 for thou art as one among the gods. 725 Buto ferries up to thee; Hierakonpolis ferries down to thee, 726 the mnt.t-woman mourns for thee; the 'imi-nt-priest robes himself for thee. 726 A welcome comes out for thee, O N., on the part of thy father; a welcome comes out for thee on the part of R`. 727 The double doors of heaven are open for thee; the double doors of the d.w-stars are open for thee, 727 after thou art descended (in the grave) as the jackal of Upper Egypt, 727 as Anubis on his belly, as Wpi.w who resides in Heliopolis. 728 The great damsel who lives in Heliopolis has given her arm to thee, 728 for thou hast no mother among mankind who has borne thee, 728 for thou hast no father among men who has conceived thee. 729 Thy mother is the great wild-cow who lives in el-Kb, the white crown, the royal head-dress, 729 she with the long feathers, she with the two hanging breasts; 729 she will nurse thee; she will not wean thee. 730 Get up (from) on thy left side, sit (put thyself) on thy right side, O N. 730 Thy places among the gods will remain, while R` leans upon thee with his arm; 730 thy fragrance is as their fragrance; 730 thy sweetness is as the sweetness of the Two Enneads. 731 Thou appearest, N., in the royal head-dress (the things of the forehead), 731 thy hand seizes the Horus-weapon (m), thy fist grasps the dmace, 731 thou standest, N., as he who is in (or, who is chief of) the two 'itr.t-palaces, who judges the words of the gods. 732 Thou belongest to the n.w (-stars), the servants, of R`, who are before the morning star. 732 Thou wilt be born (again) at thy new moons (feasts) like the moon 732 while R` leans upon thee in the horizon, N., 733 and the imperishable stars serve (follow) thee. 733 Command thyself until R` comes, N.; 733 purify thyself; ascend to R`. 733 Heaven will not be empty of thee, N., for ever.

(4) "The soul of such or such a man of whom I think in my heart,--if it is in the region of the chastisements of the dungeons of the outer darkness, or if it is in the rest of the chastisements of the dungeons of the outer darkness and in the rest of the chastisements of the dragons,--then is it to be removed out of them all. And if it hath completed its number of its circuits of the changes, then is it to be led before the Virgin of Light, and the Virgin of Light is to seal it with the seal of the Ineffable and cast it down in whatever month into a righteous body which shall find the mysteries of the Light, so that it may be good, go on high and inherit the Light-kingdom. And moreover if it hath completed the circuits of changes, then is that soul to be led before the seven virgins of the Light who [are set] over the baptisms, and they are to apply them to the soul and seal it with the sign of the kingdom of the Ineffable and lead it into the orders of the Light. "This then will ye say when ye perform the mystery. "Amēn, I say unto you: The soul for which ye shall pray, if it indeed is in the dragon of the outer darkness, he will draw his tail out of his mouth and let go that soul. And moreover if it is in all the regions of the judgments of the rulers, amēn, I say unto you: The receivers of Melchisedec will with haste snatch it away, whether the dragon let it go or it is in the judgments of the rulers; in a word, the receivers of Melchisedec will snatch it away out of all the regions in which it is, and will lead it into the region of the Midst before the Virgin of Light, and the Virgin of Light proveth it and seeth the sign of the kingdom of the Ineffable which is on that soul. "And if it hath not yet completed its number of circuits in the changes of the soul, or [in the changes] of the body, the Virgin of Light sealeth it with an excellent seal and hasteth to have it cast down in any month into a righteous body which shall find the mysteries of the Light, be good and go on high into the Light-kingdom. "And if that soul hath had its number of the circuits, then the Virgin of Light proveth it, and doth not have it chastized, because it hath had its number of circuits, but handeth it over to the seven virgins of the Light. And the seven virgins of the Light prove that soul, baptize it with their baptisms and give it the spiritual chrism and lead it into the Treasury of the Light and put it in the last order of the Light until the ascension of all the perfect souls. And when they prepare to draw apart the veils of the region of those of the Right, they cleanse that soul anew and purify it and put it in the orders of the first saviour who [is] in the Treasury of the Light."

(15) And consider attentively, I pray, with what appropriateness the holy symbols are presented. For since death is with us not an annihilation of being, as others surmise, but the separating of things united, leading to that which is invisible to us, the soul indeed becoming invisible through deprivation of the body, and the body, through being buried in earth in consequence of one of its bodily changes, becoming invisible to human ken, appropriately, the whole covering by water would be taken as an image of death, and the invisible tomb. The symbolical teaching, then, reveals in mystery that the man baptized according to religious rites, imitates, so far as Divine imitation is attainable to men, by the three immersions in the water, the supremely Divine death of the Life-giving Jesus, Who spent three days and three nights in the tomb, in Whom, according to the mystical and secret teaching of the sacred text, the Prince of the world found nothing.

(2) "And by the will of the greatness my equality was revealed, that what is of the power might become apparent. You are the great power that came into being, and I am the perfect light that is above the spirit and the darkness, the one who puts to shame the darkness for the intercourse of impure rubbing. For through the division of nature the majesty wished to be covered with honor up to the height of the thought of the spirit. And the spirit received rest in his power. For the image of the light is inseparable from the unconceived spirit. And the lawgivers did not name him after all the clouds of nature, nor is it possible to name him. For every likeness into which nature had divided is a power of the chaotic fire, which is the material seed. The one who took to himself the power of the darkness imprisoned it in the midst of its members. And by the will of the majesty, in order that the mind and the whole light of the spirit might be protected from every burden and from the toil of nature, a voice came forth from the spirit to the cloud of the hymen. And the light of the astonishment began to rejoice with the voice that was granted to him. And the great spirit of light was in the cloud of the hymen. He honored the infinite light and the universal likeness, who I am, the son of the majesty, saying, 'Anasses Duses, you are the infinite light who was given by the will of the majesty to establish every light of the spirit upon the place, and to separate the mind from the darkness. For it was not right for the light of the spirit to remain in Hades. For at your wish the spirit arose to behold your greatness.'

(2) "And I appeared in the cloud of the hymen, in silence, without my holy garment. With my will I honored my garment, which has three forms in the cloud of the hymen. And the light that was in silence, the one from the rejoicing power, contained me. I wore it. And its two parts appeared in a single form. Its other parts did not appear on account of the fire. I became unable to speak in the cloud of the hymen, for its fire was frightful, lifting itself up without diminishing. And so that my greatness and the word might appear, I placed likewise my other garment in the cloud of silence. I went into the middle region and put on the light that was in it, that was sunk in forgetfulness and that was separated from the spirit of astonishment, for he had cast off the burden. At my wish, nothing mortal appeared to him, but they were all immortal things that the spirit granted to him. And he said in the mind of the light, 'AI EIS AI OU PHAR DOU IA EI OU, I have come in great rest in order that he may give rest to my light in his root, and may bring it out of harmful nature.'

(11) Even though the deeds [of one paying such reverence] may not have been very elegant while in the human world, at his death there will come at least one kind of sign, such a rainbow-radiance, bone- images, and bone-reliques. This is because the esoteric [or mystic] doctrines possess great gift-waves.

(25) In symbolism the body is divided vertically into halves, the right half being considered as light and the left half as darkness. By those unacquainted with the true meanings of light and darkness the light half was denominated spiritual and the left half material. Light is the symbol of objectivity; darkness of subjectivity. Light is a manifestation of life and is therefore posterior to life. That which is anterior to light is darkness, in which light exists temporarily but darkness permanently. As life precedes light, its only symbol is darkness, and darkness is considered as the veil which must eternally conceal the true nature of abstract and undifferentiated Being.

(9) Thus also is the whole house of this world. The outward darkness is the house of God's wrath, wherein the devils dwell, and it is rightly the house of death, for the holy light of God has therein died. ["Understand, the light stepped into its Principle, and is the outward substantiality in God, as it were dead in our esteem, whereas it liveth in God, but in another source or quality."]

(19) No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

(9) Seizing me, he led me down to the House of Darkness, the dwelling of Irkalla, to the house where those who enter do not come out, along the road of no return, to the house where those who dwell, do without light, where dirt is their drink, their food is of clay, where, like a bird, they wear garments of feathers, and light cannot be seen, they dwell in the dark, and upon the door and bolt, there lies dust. On entering the House of Dust, everywhere I looked there were royal crowns gathered in heaps, everywhere I listened, it was the bearers of crowns, who, in the past, had ruled the land, but who now served Anu and Enlil cooked meats, served confections, and poured cool water from waterskins. In the house of Dust that I entered there sat the high priest and acolyte, there sat the purification priest and ecstatic, there sat the anointed priests of the Great Gods.
