(23) They on the rock received seed into stony places: these are they who when they have heard the word, anon with joy receive it, and for a while believe; yet have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time; and in time of temptation fall away: for afterward, when affliction or tribulation or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.

Then he turned round to us, and he gave heed, Just lifting up his eyes above his thigh, And said: "Now go thou up, for thou art valiant." Then knew I who he was; and the distress, That still a little did my breathing quicken, My going to him hindered not; and after I came to him he hardly raised his head, Saying: "Hast thou seen clearly how the sun O'er thy left shoulder drives his chariot?"

" 1142 His frontiers exist not; his boundary stones are not to be found. 1142 Also, Geb, whose (one) arm (reaches) to heaven, whose (other) arm is on earth, 1142 announces N. to R`. 1143 N. leads the gods; N. directs the divine boat; 1143 N. seizes heaven, its pillars and its stars. 1144 The gods come to him bowing; 1144 the spirits escort N. to his ba; 1144 they reckon (gather up) their war-clubs; 1144 they destroy their weapons; 1145 for behold N. is a great one, the son of a great one, whom Nut has borne; 1145 the power of N. is the power of Set of Ombos. 1145 This N. is the great wild-bull, who comes forth like nti'imnti.w. 1146 N. is the pouring down of rain; he came forth as the coming into being of water; 1146 for he is the Nb-k.w-serpent with the many coils; 1146 N. is the scribe of the divine book, who says what is and causes to exist what is not; 1147 N. is the red bandage, who comes forth from the great 'I.t; 1147 N. is that eye of Horus, 1147 stronger than men, mightier than the gods. 1148 Horus carries N., Set lifts him up. 1148 Let N. make an offering which a star gives; 1148 he satisfies the two gods, let them be satisfied; he satisfies the two gods, and so they are satisfied.

(5) He led us on to where the rock was cleft; There smote upon my forehead with his wings, Then a safe passage promised unto me. As on the right hand, to ascend the mount Where seated is the church that lordeth it O'er the well-guided, above Rubaconte, The bold abruptness of the ascent is broken By stairways that were made there in the age When still were safe the ledger and the stave, E'en thus attempered is the bank which falls Sheer downward from the second circle there; But on this, side and that the high rock graze. As we were turning thitherward our persons, "Beati pauperes spiritu," voices Sang in such wise that speech could tell it not. Ah me! how different are these entrances From the Infernal! for with anthems here One enters, and below with wild laments. We now were hunting up the sacred stairs, And it appeared to me by far more easy Than on the plain it had appeared before. Whence I: "My Master, say, what heavy thing Has been uplifted from me, so that hardly Aught of fatigue is felt by me in walking?"

(3) They were made slaves, they were wounded, and they were killed with arrows against the trees [to which they had been tied] and for them there was no longer any glory, they no longer had power. In this way came about the destruction of the towns, which were instantly razed to the ground. Like a flash of lightning which strikes and shatters the rock, so, in an instant were the conquered people filled with terror.

(5) They had the appearance of youths, when those who came to offer gifts saw them. Then the persecution of the young of the birds and of the deer began, and the fruit of the chase was received by the priests and sacrificers. And when they found the young of the birds and the deer, they went at once to place the blood of the deer and of the birds in the mouths of the stones, that were Tohil and Avilix. As soon as the blood had been drunk by the gods, the stones spoke, when the priests and the sacrificers came, when they came to bring their offerings. And they did the same before their symbols, burning pericón and holom-ocox.

(89) And that sheep which led them again ascended to the summit of that rock, but the sheep began to be blinded and to wander from the way which he had showed them, but that sheep wot not thereof.

(1) And now we shall tell of their stay and abode there on the mountain, where the four called Balam-Quitzé, Balam-Acab, Mahucutah, and Iqui-Balam were together. Their hearts mourned for Tohil, Avilix, and Hacavitz, whom they had placed among the air-plants and the moss. We shall tell now how they made the sacrifices at the foot of the place where they had carried Tohil, when they arrived in the presence of Tohil and Avilix. They went to see them, to greet them, and also to give them thanks for the arrival of the dawn. They were in the thicket amidst the stones, there in the woods. And only by magic art did they speak when the priests and sacrificers came before Tohil. They did not bring great gifts, only resin, the remains of the gum, called noh, and pericón, they burned before their gods.

(89) And the Lord of the sheep was wrathful exceedingly against them, and that sheep discovered it, and went down from the summit of the rock, and came to the sheep, and found the greatest part of them blinded and fallen away.

(11) Thus, the indispensable nature of the Thodol being shown, there now cometh the setting-face-to-face with the dawning of the Wrathful [Deities] in the Bardo.

(3) The tempter came: he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But Jesus answered,

Thus down we took our way o'er that discharge Of stones, which oftentimes did move themselves Beneath my feet, from the unwonted burden. Thoughtful I went; and he said: "Thou art thinking Perhaps upon this ruin, which is guarded By that brute anger which just now I quenched. Now will I have thee know, the other time I here descended to the nether Hell, This precipice had not yet fallen down. But truly, if I well discern, a little Before His coming who the mighty spoil Bore off from Dis, in the supernal circle, Upon all sides the deep and loathsome valley Trembled so, that I thought the Universe Was thrilled with love, by which there are who think The world ofttimes converted into chaos; And at that moment this primeval crag Both here and elsewhere made such overthrow. But fix thine eyes below; for draweth near The river of blood, within which boiling is Whoe'er by violence doth injure others."

(92) And the gods of the battle cried out for their weapons

(7) Like an arrow he fell among them ("the stone things"). From the middle of the woods their noise could be heard. Urshanabi, the sharp-eyed, saw... When he heard the axe, he ran toward it. He struck his head... Gilgamesh. He clapped his hands and... his chest, while "the stone things"... the boat... Waters of Death... broad sea in the Waters of Death...... to the river... the boat... on the shore. Gilgamesh spoke to Urshanabi (?), the ferryman,... you. Urshanabi spoke to Gilgamesh, saying:' "Why are your cheeks emaciated, your expression desolate! Why is your heart so wretched, your features so haggard? Why is there such sadness deep within you! Why do you look like one who has been traveling a long distance so that ice and heat have seared your face! Why... you roam the wilderness! Gilgamesh spoke to Urshanabi, saying: "Urshanabi, should not my cheeks be emaciated, my expression desolate!

(89) And that sheep ascended to the summit of that lofty rock, and the Lord of the sheep sent it to them.
