(3) He who, dwelling in the darkness, yet is other than the darkness, whom the darkness does not know, whose body the darkness is, who controls the darkness from within — He is your Soul, the Inner Controller, the Immortal. whom the light does not know, whose body the light is, who controls the light from within — He is your Soul, the Inner Controller, the Immortal. — Thus far with reference to the divinities. Now with refer- ence to material existence (adhi-bhuta). —

(24) Thou seest thy relatives and connexions and speakest to them, but receivest no reply. Then, seeing them and thy family weeping, thou thinkest, 'I am dead! What shall I do?' and feelest great misery, just like a fish cast out [of water] on red-hot embers. Such misery thou wilt be experiencing at present. But feeling miserable will avail thee nothing now. If thou hast a divine guru, pray to him. Pray to the Tutelary Deity, the Compassionate One. Even though thou feelest attachment for thy relatives and connexions, it will do thee no good. So be not attached. Pray to the Compassionate Lord; thou shalt have nought or sorrow, or of terror, or of awe.

(10) But the body of this great house, which lies hid under the shell or rind of darkness, incomprehensibly to the darkness, that body is the house of life, wherein love and wrath wrestle the one with the other.

(7) Some Sufis have had the unseen world of heaven and hell revealed to them when in a state of death-like trance. On their recovering consciousness their faces betray the nature of the revelations they have had by marks of joy or terror. But no visions are necessary to prove what will occur to every thinking man, that when death has stripped him for his senses and left him nothing but his bare personality, if while on earth he has too closely attached himself to objects perceived by the senses, such as wives, children, wealth, lands, slaves, male and female, etc., he must necessarily suffer when bereft of those objects. Whereas, on the contrary, if he has as far as possible turned his back on all earthly objects and fixed his supreme affection upon God, he will welcome death as a means of escape from worldly entanglements, and of union with Him whom he loves. In his case the Prophet's sayings will be verified: "Death is a bridge which unites friend to friend," and "The world is a paradise for infidels, but a prison for the faithful."

(7) Those who take shelter in me, striving for liberation from old-age and death, come to know Brahman , the individual self, and the entire field of karmic action.

(5) A man dies when he has no life-air, just as the fishes are destroyed when deprived of water. Therefore the adepts have taught the people to hold fast to the primal and to guard the One; it is the

(47) A curious aspect of the dying-god myth is that of the Hanged Man. The most important example of this peculiar conception is found in the Odinic rituals where Odin hangs himself for nine nights from the branches of the World Tree and upon the same occasion also pierces his own side with the sacred spear. As the result of this great sacrifice, Odin, while suspended over the depths of Nifl-heim, discovered by meditation the runes or alphabets by which later the records of his people were preserved. Because of this remarkable experience, Odin is sometimes shown seated on a gallows tree and he became the patron deity of all who died by the noose. Esoterically, the Hanged Man is the human spirit which is suspended from heaven by a single thread. Wisdom, not death, is the reward for this voluntary sacrifice during which the human soul, suspended above the world of illusion, and meditating upon its unreality, is rewarded by the achievement of self-realization.

(73) Therefore man carrieth about with him here upon earth, in his body, the devil's eternal dwelling-house. O thou fair excellent goddess! may thou not well prance and trick thyself therein, and in the meanwhile invite the devil into the new birth for a guest, will it not profit thee very much? Take heed that thou dost not generate a new devil, who will remain in his own house.

(390) 683 To say: N. is pure, his ka is pure. 683 How well is N., how well is N.--the bodily health of Horus! 683 How well is N., how well is, N.--the bodily health of Set! 683 The bodily health of N. is (to be) between you. 684 It is N. who stretched the cord (of a bow) as Horus, who draw the string as Osiris. 684 It is that one (the dead) who has gone; it is this one (Osiris) who comes (again). 685 Art thou Horus? A face is upon thee; thou shalt be set on thy head. 685 Art thou Set? A face is upon thee; thou shalt be laid on thy back. 685 This foot of N. [which he has placed upon thee is the] foot of Mfd.t; 685 [that] hand of N., which he has placed upon thee, is the hand of Mfd.t, who lives in the "house of life." 686 N. strikes thee in thy face, 686 so that thy saliva runs away. [He ------- so that] thy cheek ---. 686 iw-serpent, lie down; n`w-serpent, glide away.

(18) Do not bring grief and trouble to the divine which is within you. But when you will care for it, will request of it that you remain pure, and will become self-controlled in your soul and body, you will become a throne of wisdom, and one belonging to God's household. He will give you a great light through it (wisdom).

(4) For the Eternal Æon [1] -- according to the Oracle -- is the cause of never failing life, of unwearied power and unsluggish energy.

(259) 312 To say: N. is Osiris in a dust-storm. 3112 The abomination of N. is the earth; he has, not entered into Geb, 312 that N. might perish; nor has he slept in his house on earth, 312 that the bones of N. might be broken. His wounds are effaced; 312 N. has purified himself with the eye of Horus; his wound is effaced by the two mourners of Osiris; 312 N. has let the running (of his wound) flow to the ground at u. 313 It is the sister of N., the lady P, who wept for him. 313 The two nurses (or, attendants), who wept for Osiris, wept for him. 313 N. is on his way to heaven; N. is on his way to heaven, with Shu and R`. 313 N. is not hindered; there is no one who hinders him. 313 N. is upon his feet, the eldest of the gods. 313 N. has no session in the divine court. 314 The bread of N. comes on high with (that of) R`; 314 his offering comes out of Nun. 314 N. is one who comes again; 314 N. goes with R`; N. comes with R`. 3, 4 His houses are visited by him. 3, 5 He covers up evil; he abolishes evil. 315 He seizes kas; he frees kas. 315 N. spends the day; he spends the night; N. frees the two choppers in Wn.w. 315 Nothing opposes the feet of N.; nothing restrains the heart of N. 8. THE DECEASED KING TRIUMPHS OVER HIS ENEMIES AND IS RECOGNIZED BY THE GODS,

(1) 'There are the two, drinking their reward in the world of their own works, entered into the cave (of the heart), dwelling on the highest summit (the ether in the heart). Those who know Brahman call them shade and light; likewise, those householders who perform the Trinâkiketa sacrifice.'

(16) But when the Wisdom of God saw that Man, from the Spirit of the World, came to lust, to mingle himself with the four Elements, then came the Commandment and said; Thou shalt not eat of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Now the Knowledge of Good and Evil is not manifest in the Paradise, and in the Kingdom of Heaven, but only in what is proceeded out of the Element, in the Fierceness, there only stands the Knowledge of Evil manifest; and there only the Essences are capable of being kindled, and so therein Death sticks; of which God said, When thou eatest thereof thou shalt die.

(3) An old woman offered Bu All a piece of gold saying: 'Accept this from me.' He replied: 'I can accept things only from God.' The old woman retorted: 'Where did you learn to see double? You are not a man of power to bind and unbind. If you were not squint-eyed would you see several things at once?'

There is neither Ka'aba nor Pagoda. Learn from my mouth the true doctrine - the eternal existence of Being. We

must not see anyone other than Him. We are in Him, by Him, and with Him. We may also be outside these states. Whoever is not immersed in the Ocean of Unity is not worthy of the race of men.

The day will come when the Sun will draw' aside the veil which covers it. So long as you are separate, good and evil will arise in you, but when you lose yourself in the sun of the divine essence they will be transcended by love. While you loiter on the road you will be held back by faults and weaknesses. Have you not yet realized that in your body there are conceit, vanity, self-pride, selflove and other dirty things! Though the serpent and the scorpion may seem to be dead within you they are only asleep; and if something touches them they will wake up with the strength of a hundred dragons. In each of us is a Hell of serpents. If you make yourself secure against these unclean creatures you may remain tranquil; if not, they will sting you even in the dust of the tomb until the day of reckoning.

And now, O Attar, leave your metaphorical discourses and return to the description of the mysterious Valley of Unity.

The Hoopoe continued: 'When the spiritual traveller enters this valley he will disappear and be lost to sight because the Unique Being will manifest himself; he will be silent because this Being wiU speak.

'The part will become the whole, or rather, there will be neither part nor whole. In the School of the Secret you will see thousands of men with intellectual knowledge, their lips parted in silence. What is intellectual knowledge here? It stops on the threshold of the door like a blind child. He who discovers something of this secret turns his face from the kingdom of the tuo worlds. The Being I speak of does not exist separately; everyone is this Being, existence and nonexistence is this Being. '

(385) 673 To say: R` dawns against thee; 673 Horus bends his Nine Bows against this spirit which comes out of the earth, 673 with severed head and clipped tail. 673 Dr-serpent, Ddi, son of r.t-tw, 674 turn around, turn over, that one may forgive (?) thee in respect of him (the dead). 674 fn.w-serpent, fnn.t-serpent, 675 pay attention to him, pay attention to the earth, pay attention to thy father Geb. 675 If thou payest not attention to him, his. branding-iron which is on (over) thy head will pay attention to thee. 675 ri.w-serpent, lie down. 676 Spring up, kr (earth), seize him; Hole-in-the-earth, straighten thy tail. 676 If N. moves his arm against thee thou shalt die; 676 if the arm of N. lets thee go thou shalt not live. 677 The (my) watercourse is thy watercourse, says Shu. 677 Shu stands on thy fetters. 677 Turn around, turn over. 677 The fingers of N. which are upon thee are the fingers of the mfd.t-lynx, who lives in the "house of life," 678 that thou mayest spit out. Fall, flee, turn over. 678 Horus would have struck thee down, and thou wouldst not be alive; 678 Set would have cut thee to pieces, and thou wouldst not rise (again).
