(2) It is said that Anacharsis the Scythian, while asleep, covered the pudenda with his left hand, and his mouth with his fight, to intimate that both ought to be mastered, but that it was a greater thing to master the tongue than voluptuousness.

I have adjusted for thee thy mouth to thy bones! 13 I open for thee thy mouth; I open for thee thine eyes, O N. 13 I open for thee thy mouth with the nw, the mtiw-hook of copper (or, iron), which opens the mouth of the gods. 13 Horus opens the mouth of this N.; [Horus opens the mouth of this N.]. 13 [Horus has opened] the mouth of this N.; Horus has opened the mouth of this N. 13 with that wherewith he opened the mouth of his father; with that wherewith he opened the mouth of Osiris; 14 with the copper, (or, iron) which comes forth from Set, the mtiw-hook of copper (or, iron), which opens the mouth of the gods. 14 He opens the mouth of N. therewith, that he may go, 14 that he himself may speak before the Great Ennead in the house of the prince, which is in Heliopolis, 14 that he may carry off the wrr.t-crown (which is) with Horus, lord of men.

(111) But that the tongue and the upper gums close the mouth, when the spirit cometh upon the tongue, signifieth that the seven qualifying or fountain spirits of nature in this world, at the time of the creation, were not mortified and dead through the wrath of God, but were lively, active and vigorous. For the tongue signifieth or denoteth the life of nature, in which stands the animated, soulish and holy birth or geniture: For it is a type [prefiguration or resemblance] of the soul.

(3) For instance, in the adaptation of the front and side-teeth to the mastication of food, and in the construction of the tongue, salivating glands, and throat for its deglutition, we find a contrivance which cannot be improved upon. Similarly, whoever considers his hand, with its five fingers of unequal lengths, four of them with three joints and the thumb with only two, and the way in which it can be used for grasping, or for carrying, or for smiting, will frankly acknowledge that no amount of human wisdom could better it by altering the number and arrangement of the fingers, or in any other way.

(46) 3. He established twenty-two basic letters, formed by the voice and impressed upon the air by the breath. He set them to be audibly uttered in five different parts of the human mouth: namely, Gutturals, א ה ח ע; Palatals, ג י כ ק; Linguals, ד ט ל נ ת Dentals, ז ש ס ר ץ; Labials, ב ו מ ף.

(16) "The design of a temple depends on symmetry, the principles of which must be most carefully observed by the architect. They are due to proportion, in ἀναλογία. Proportion is a correspondence among the measures of the members of an entire work, and of the whole to a certain part selected as standard. From this result the principles of symmetry. Without symmetry and proportion there can be no principles in the design of any temple; that is, if there is no precise relation between its members, as in the case of those of a well shaped man. For the human body is so designed by nature that the face, from the chin to the top of the forehead and the lowest roots of the hair, is a tenth part of the whole height; the open hand from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger is just the same; the head from the chin to the crown is an eighth, and with the neck and shoulder from the top of the breast to the lowest roots of the hair is a sixth; from the middle of the breast to the summit of the crown is a fourth. If we take the height of the face itself, the distance from the bottom of the chin to the under side of the nostrils [and from that point] to a line between the eyebrows is the same; from there to the lowest roots of the hair is also a third, comprising the forehead. The length of the foot is one sixth of the height of the body; of the forearm, one fourth; and the breadth of the breast is also one fourth. The other members, too, have their own symmetrical proportions, and it was by employing them that the famous painters and sculptors of antiquity attained to great and endless renown."

(97) The word (Sprach) conceiveth itself between the teeth, for they bite or join close together, and the spirit hisseth forth through the teeth, and the tongue boweth or bendeth in the middle, and setteth its forepoint, as if it did listen after the hissing, and was afraid.

(2) I eat with my mouth, and I chew with my jaw; for, lo, I worship the god who is Lord of the Tuat, and that is given to me which endureth amid overthrow

(19) The mouth signifieth that thou art an unalmighty son of thy Father, whether thou art an angel or a man. For through the mouth thou must draw into thee the power of thy Father, if thou wilt live.

(9) "Since nature has designed the human body so that its members are duly proportioned to the frame as a whole, it appears that the ancients had good reason for their rule, that in perfect building the different members must be in exact symmetrical relations to the whole general scheme. Hence, while transmitting to us the proper arrangements for buildings of all kinds, they were particularly careful to do so in the case of temples of the gods, buildings in which merits and faults usually last forever. * * * Therefore, if it is agreed that number was found out from the human fingers, and that there is a symmetrical correspondent between the members separately and the entire form of the body, in accordance with a certain part selected as standard, we can have nothing but respect for those who, in constructing temples of the immortal gods, have so arranged the members of the works that both the separate parts and the whole design may harmonize in their proportions and symmetry." (3) And on that day was closed the mouth of all beasts, and of cattle, and of birds, and of whatever walketh, and of whatever moveth, so that they could no longer speak : for they had all spoken one with another with one lip and with one tongue.

(6) The one uprose and down the other fell, Though turning not away their impious lamps, Underneath which each one his muzzle changed. He who was standing drew it tow'rds the temples, And from excess of matter, which came thither, Issued the ears from out the hollow cheeks; What did not backward run and was retained Of that excess made to the face a nose, And the lips thickened far as was befitting. The soul, which to a reptile had been changed, Along the valley hissing takes to flight, And after him the other speaking sputters.

(18) The windings of these serpents formed the base, and the three heads sustained the three feet of the tripod. It is impossible to secure satisfactory information concerning the shape and size of the celebrated Delphian tripod. Theories concerning it are based (in most part) upon small ornamental tripods discovered in various temples.

(5) Be silent Ovid, of Cadmus and Arethusa; For if him to a snake, her to fountain, Converts he fabling, that I grudge him not; Because two natures never front to front Has he transmuted, so that both the forms To interchange their matter ready were. Together they responded in such wise, That to a fork the serpent cleft his tail, And eke the wounded drew his feet together. The legs together with the thighs themselves Adhered so, that in little time the juncture No sign whatever made that was apparent. He with the cloven tail assumed the figure The other one was losing, and his skin Became elastic, and the other's hard. I saw the arms draw inward at the armpits, And both feet of the reptile, that were short, Lengthen as much as those contracted were. Thereafter the hind feet, together twisted, Became the member that a man conceals, And of his own the wretch had two created. While both of them the exhalation veils With a new colour, and engenders hair On one of them and depilates the other,

(4) Long before the introduction of idolatry into religion, the early priests caused the statue of a man to be placed in the sanctuary of the temple. This human figure symbolized the Divine Power in all its intricate manifestations. Thus the priests of antiquity accepted man as their textbook, and through the study of him learned to understand the greater and more abstruse mysteries of the celestial scheme of which they were a part. It is not improbable that this mysterious figure standing over the primitive altars was made in the nature of a manikin and, like certain emblematic hands in the Mystery schools, was covered with either carved or painted hieroglyphs. The statue may have opened, thus showing the relative positions of the organs, bones, muscles, nerves, and other parts. After ages of research, the manikin became a mass of intricate hieroglyphs and symbolic figures. Every part had its secret meaning. The measurements formed a basic standard by means of which it was possible to measure all parts of cosmos. It was a glorious composite emblem of all the knowledge possessed by the sages and hierophants.

(16) And therefore the seven spirits of God have created a mouth for the creatures, that when they [the creatures] would utter their voice, which is their speaking, or [when they would] make a noise, they need not first tear themselves open; and therefore it is that all the veins and powers or qualifying [conditioning] or fountain spirits go into the tongue, that the tone or noise may come forth gently.

(20) 11 [To say: O] N., I have come in search of thee; I am Horus. 11 I have pressed for thee thy mouth. I am thy son, thy beloved. I have opened for thee thy mouth. 12 [He is the defender of his mother when she weeps for him, the defender of her who is united with him]. 12 [How good is the condition (?) of thy mouth after] I have adjusted for thee thy mouth to thy bones! 12 To say four times: Osiris N., I open for thee thy mouth with the thigh, the eye of Horus. (33) The Turbæ Philosophorum is one of the earliest known documents on alchemy in the Latin tongue. Its exact origin is unknown. It is sometimes referred to as The Third Pythagorical Synod. As its name implies, it is an assembly of the sages and sets forth the alchemical viewpoints of many of the early Greek philosophers. The symbol reproduced above is from a rare edition of the Turbæ Philosophorum published in Germany in 1750, and represents by a hermaphroditic figure the accomplishment of the magnum opus. The active and passive principles of Nature were often depicted by male and female figures, and when these two principle, were harmoniously conjoined in any one nature or body it was customary to symbolize this state of perfect equilibrium by the composite figure above shown.
