(3) The swallow too, which suggests the fable of Pandion, seeing it is right to detest the incidents reported of it, some of which we hear Tereus suffered, and some of which he inflicted. It pursues also the musical grasshoppers, whence he who is a persecutor of the word ought to be driven away.

(13) Now the compilers of narratives say that in the island of Britain s there is a cave situated under a mountain, and a chasm on its summit; and that, accordingly, when the wind falls into the cave, and rushes into the bosom of the cleft, a sound is heard like cymbals clashing musically. And often in the woods, when the leaves are moved by a sudden gust of wind, a sound is emitted like the song of birds.

(3) Each one her breast was rending with her nails; They beat them with their palms, and cried so loud, That I for dread pressed close unto the Poet. "Medusa come, so we to stone will change him!" (13) And those golden figures, each of them with six wings, signify either the two bears, as some will have it, or rather the two hemispheres. And the name cherubim meant "much knowledge." But both together have twelve wings, and by the zodiac and time, which moves on it, point out the world of sense. It is of them, I think, that Tragedy, discoursing of Nature, says: "Unwearied Time circles full in perennial flow, Producing itself. And the twin-bears On the swift wandering motions of their wings, Keep the Atlantean pole."

(8) Euripides accordingly says, "Golden wings are round my back, and I am shod with the winged sandals of the Sirens; and I shall go aloft into the wide ether, to hold convene with Zeus." But I shall pray the Spirit of Christ to wing me to my Jerusalem. For the Stoics say that heaven is properly a city, but places here on earth are not cities; for they are called so, but are not. For a city is an important thing, and the people a decorous body, and a multitude of men regulated by law as the church by the word - a city on earth impregnable - free from tyranny; a product of the divine will on earth as in heaven. Images of this city the poets create with their pen. For the Hyperboreans, and the Arimaspian cities, and the Elysian plains, are commonwealths of just men. And we know Plato's city placed as a pattern in heaven.

The FUMIGATION from AROMATICS. VOCIFEROUS Bacchanalian Furies, hear! Ye, I invoke, dread pow'rs, whom all revere; Nightly, profound, in secret who retire, Tisiphone, Alecto, and Megara dire: Deep in a cavern merg'd, involv'd in night, Near where Styx flows impervious to the sight; Ever attendant on mysterious rites, Furious and fierce, whom Fate's dread law delights; Revenge and sorrows dire to you belong, Hid in a savage veil, severe and strong, Terrific virgins, who forever dwell Endu'd with various forms, in deepest hell; Aerial, and unseen by human kind, And swiftly coursing, rapid as the mind. In vain the Sun with wing'd refulgence bright, In vain the Moon, far darting milder light, Wisdom and Virtue may attempt in vain; And pleasing, Art, our transport to obtain Unless with these you readily conspire, And far avert your all-destructive ire. The boundless tribes of mortals you descry, And justly rule with Right's impartial eye. Come, snaky-hair'd, Fates many-form'd, divine, Suppress your rage, and to our rites incline.

(11) First of birds the griffon of three natures was created, not for here (this world), for the Karsipt is the chief, which they call the falcon (kark), that which revelation says was brought to the enclosure formed by Yim.

(1) Not yet had Nessus reached the other side, When we had put ourselves within a wood, That was not marked by any path whatever. Not foliage green, but of a dusky colour, Not branches smooth, but gnarled and intertangled, Not apple-trees were there, but thorns with poison. Such tangled thickets have not, nor so dense, Those savage wild beasts, that in hatred hold 'Twixt Cecina and Corneto the tilled places. There do the hideous Harpies make their nests, Who chased the Trojans from the Strophades, With sad announcement of impending doom; Broad wings have they, and necks and faces human, And feet with claws, and their great bellies fledged; They make laments upon the wondrous trees. And the good Master: "Ere thou enter farther, Know that thou art within the second round," Thus he began to say, "and shalt be, till Thou comest out upon the horrible sand; Therefore look well around, and thou shalt see Things that will credence give unto my speech." I heard on all sides lamentations uttered, And person none beheld I who might make them, Whence, utterly bewildered, I stood still.

The FUMIGATION from AROMATICS. HEAR me, illustrious Furies, mighty nam'd, Terrific pow'rs, for prudent counsel fam'd; Holy and pure, from Jove terrestrial born And Proserpine, whom lovely locks adorn: Whose piercing sight, with vision unconfin'd, Surveys the deeds of all the impious kind: On Fate attendant, punishing the race (With wrath severe) of deeds unjust and base. Dark-colour'd queens, whose glittering eyes, are bright With dreadful, radiant, life-destroying, light: Eternal rulers, terrible and strong, To whom revenge, and tortures dire belong; Fatal and horrid to the human sight, With snaky tresses wand'ring in the night; Either approach, and in these rites rejoice, For ye, I call, with holy, suppliant voice.
