(5) So then the men said to him: 'Speak to us, Sir/ To them then he spoke this syllable, c Da! ' Did you understand?' (dattay ' < Yes (Om) \ ' said he. ' You did understand/

(1) 2. And it is also the Sama-Veda. The Chant (saman\ verily, is speech. It is sa (she) and ama (he). That is the origin of the word sdman. Or because it is equal (sama) to a gnat, equal to a fly, equal to an elephant, equal to these three worlds, equal to this uni- verse, therefore, indeed; it is the Sama-Veda. He obtains intimate union with the Saman, he wins its world who knows thus that Saman.

(2) Then said Yajnavalkya: ' Ah (bata) \ Lo (arc\ dear (priya) as you are to us, dear is what you say! Come, sit down. I will explain to you. But while I am expounding, do you seek to ponder thereon.

(2) And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me,

(29) What is the letter ו? He said: There is an upper ה and a lower ה.

(6) Then he said: 'As truly as this knowledge has never heretofore dwelt with any Brahman (brd/imana) whatsoever, so truly may not you and your grandfathers injure us. But I will tell it to you, for who is able to refuse you when you speak thus! ' He continued (iti):

(5) Aye, do Thou tell me that I may discern it, since through (Thy) Righteous Order the better (lot) is given; tell me this that I may know it with (Thy) Good Mind (as it speaks within me), and that I may ponder that to which these my truths belong (and of which my prophet speaks; yea), tell me those things, O Mazda Ahura! which may not be, and which may be .

(7) Thy lips utter for thee words of truth, they repeat the words of truth of Rā which are well pleasing to the gods. Thy teeth are the two heads of the serpent by which the two gods are seized, thy tongue is voluble; thy voice is more shrill than that of the bird in the marshes; thy ears (?) are well established at their place, they go (with thee) to the land of Amenta

(83) I had laid me down in the house of my grandfather Mahalalel, (when) I saw in a vision how the heaven collapsed and was borne off and fell to the earth.

(2) Ajatas'atru said: ' Is that all? ' Gargya said: ' That is all.' Ajatas'atru said: ' With that much [only] it is not known.' Gargya said: ' Let me come to you as a pupil/

(3) She said: ' That, O Yajnavalkya, which is above the sky, that which is beneath the eaith, that which is between these two, sky and earth, that which people call the past and the present and the future — across what is that woven, warp and woof? '

(12) And since Thou, coming thus, Thy legal Righteousness in fulness spakest, then declare not to me words as yet unheard (with faith or knowledge; command me not) to go forth (with these upon my task) before Thy Sraosha (Obedience) comes to me, to go on hand in hand with me with holy recompense and mighty splendour , whereby to give the contending throngs(?), as a blessing , (Your) spiritual gifts (of certainty and peace).

(37) And this is the beginning of the words of wisdom which I lifted up my voice to speak and say to those which dwell on earth: Hear, ye men of old time, and see, ye that come after, the words of the Holy One which I will speak before the Lord of Spirits.

(1) These same are the three Vedas. The Rig-Veda is Speech. The Yajur-Veda is Mind. The Sama-Veda is Breath.

(3) He said: ( That, O Gargi, which is above the sky, that which is beneath the earth, that which is between these two, sky and earth, that which people call the past and the present and the future — across space is that woven, warp and woof/

(2) For I have passed through the place of purification in the middle of the Meskat; the inviolate god has given me his glorious attributes on the day when the two Earths were united in the presence of the Master of (all) things

(8) As I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying,
