(1) Likewise it carried Smell across. When that was freed from death, it became wind. This wind, when it has crossed beyond death, purifies.

(69) But seeing the Water, which is the Spirit of the astral Life, stood in the Midst or Center of Wrath, and also in Death, thereupon also every Body formed itself as the Birth or Geniture to Life and Mobility was. Of the Earth.

(8) The moving or boiling Spirit, which before qualified or operated very meekly in Nature, that became in its outermost Birth or Geniture very elevating and terrible, which now in the outermost Birth is called the Wind, or the Element of Air, in regard of its Elevation or Expansion.

(60) And when the spirit of the rain goes forth from its chamber, the angels come and open the chamber and lead it out, and when it is diffused over the whole earth it unites with the water on the earth. And whensoever it unites with the water on the earth . . .

(5) The wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth its nourse.

(9) For when the seven Spirits kindled themselves in their outermost Birth or Geniture, then they generated such a violent moving Spirit; and to the sweet Water, which before before the Times of the Wrath was very rarified and thin, and incomprehensible, grew very thick and elevated, and swelled, and the astringent Quality grew very sharp, and cold-fier, or fierce-cold, for it got a strong Attracting together, like Salt.

(82) For before the Times of the World the Water was very thin or rarified like Air, and then the Life was generated therein also, which Water is now so mortal, corrupted, perished and spoiled, and so rolls and runs to and fro.

(86) Now being thus agreed, they generated also such a Spirit, which came forth at the Mouth, at the Eyes, at the Ears, and at the Nostrils, and affected or mixed itself with the Salitter that was without distinct from the Body. [y The astringent or harsh Spirit.]

(60) And the spirit of the dew has its dwelling at the ends of the heaven, and is connected with the chambers of the rain, and its course is in winter and summer: and its clouds and the clouds of the mist are connected, and the one gives to the other.

(21) Now these Two Qualities wrestle continually one with another, the Heat consumes the Water, and the Cold condenses or crowds the Air. Now Air is a Cause and the Spirit of every Life and Motion in the World, whether it be in Flesh, or in any of the Vegetables; all whatever is, has its Life from the Air, and Nothing whatsoever can subsist without Air, that moves and is in this World.

(75) [And for the winds and the spirit of the dew† when they are opened, standing open in the heavens at the ends.]

(44) And when the Light of the Sun appeared in the fierce [Sourness or] Harshness, then the Harshness became thin and a sweet, even Water, and the Fierceness in the Fire-flash was extinguished by the Water, so that the Anger stood still, yet the Will could not rest, but went forth in the Mother, out of the Water, and moved itself, which is the Air: And that which the fierce Sourness had attracted to it, that was thrust out of the Element, in the Water, as you see that the Earth swims in the Water.

(22) Then out of the imprisoned Light a mysterious and Holy Word came forth and took its stand upon the smoking waters. This Word--the Voice of the Light--rose out of the darkness as a great pillar, and the fire and the air followed after it, but the earth and the water remained unmoved below. Thus the waters of Light were divided from the waters of darkness, and from the waters of Light were formed the worlds above and from the waters of darkness were formed the worlds below. The earth and the water next mingled, becoming inseparable, and the Spiritual Word which is called Reason moved upon their surface, causing endless turmoil.

(1) Out of the water and out of the moon the divine Breath enters him. Verily, that is the divine Breath which, whether moving or not moving, is not perturbed, nor injured. He who knows this becomes the Self of all beings. As is that divinity [i.e. Prajapati], so is he. As all beings favor that divinity, so to him who knows this all beings show favor. Whatever sufferings creatures endure, these remain with them. Only good goes to him. Evil, verily, does not go to the gods. Breath, the unfailing power in a person: like the unwearying world-breath, wind

(6) But the fact that they are named winds denotes their rapid action, passing almost instantaneously to all things, and their transporting movement in passing from above to below, and again from below to above, their elevating the second to the height above, and moving the first to a common and provident advance of the inferior Orders. But perhaps some one would say that the appellation of wind, to the aerial spirit, also denotes the Divine likeness of the Heavenly Minds; for this also bears a likeness and type of the supremely Divine energy (as we have demonstrated more fully in the symbolic theology, in our explanation of the four elements) in accordance with the moving and life-producing, and the rapid and resistless development of Nature, and the Hiddenness of the moving sources and terminations to us unknown and invisible. For He says, "Thou knowest not whence it cometh nor whither it goeth." But also the Word of God attributes to them the appearance of a cloud, signifying, through this, that the holy minds are filled super-mundanely with the hidden Light, receiving the first manifestation without boasting over it as such, which they distribute ungrudgingly to the second, as a secondary manifestation, and in proportion to capacity; yea, further, that the productive, and life-producing, and increasing, and perfecting power is enshrined in them, after the fashion of the intelligible production of showers, which summons the receptive womb of the earth, by fruitful rains, to the life-giving pangs of birth.

(29) Now when this Conference (which is spiritual, between the three Elements, Fire, Air, and Water,) was perceived by the Spirit of the Earth (viz. the Essences in the Region of the Lungs) then ait comes at last (when the Habitation or the Court was already built for the Children of the Earth) and says to the three Elements; Wherefore will you take the Body for the Spirit? Will you take the Children of the Earth, and feed upon them? I am their Spirit, and am pure; I can strengthen the Essences of the Soul with my Virtue and Essences, and uphold them well, take me in.

(104) The second Spirit is the Water: And as the astringent or harsh Quality is the Father of the other six Spirits, which attracts or draws them together, and so holds them, so the sweet Water is the Mother, in which all Spirits are conceived, kept and generated, that softens, and moistens, or soaks them, wherein and whereby they get their Life, and then the Light of Joyfulness rises up therein.

(33) 3rd. Primordial water He extracted from the air. He formed therein twenty-two letters and established them out of mud and loam, making them like a border, putting them up like a wall, and surrounding them as with a rampart. He poured snow upon them and it became earth, as it reads: "He said to the snow be thou earth." (Job. xxxvii. 6.)

(19) But when the Spirit of the four Elements parts, then the right Soul (which was breathed into Adam) stands in its Principle; for it is so subtle, that it cannot be comprehended; it goes through Flesh and Bones, also through Wood and Stone, and P stirs none of them.

(49) And the Spirit of the eternal Essences (which has Understanding and Knowledge, and also the Trial and Proving of every Thing, in which the Source [or active Property or Quality] which is in Man, consists) that was breathed into him, by the Wisdom of God, through the driving Will, which goes forward, out of the eternal Mind, out of the opened Gates of the Deep, through the Word, [together] with the moving Spirit of God. And he had the Touch of the Center of the Abyss [viz.'] the eternal Source a behind him, as a Band, and before him, the Heart and Light of God, as a Glance of the Joy and Kindling of Paradise, which springs up in the Essences with the Light of the Joy; and beneath him [he had] the four Elements in the Budding out of the Limbus which was in him.
