(24) For of pleasant odour, which is one thing genetically, there are many specific causes, as frankincense, rose, crocus, styrax, myrrh, ointment. For the rose has not the same kind of sweet fragrance as myrrh.

(13) And he saw. and behold, the land was very wide and good, and everything grew thereon — vines and figs and pomegranates, oaks and ilexes, and terebinths and oil trees, and cedars and cypresses and date trees, and all trees of the field, and there was water on the mountains.

(19) Whatever root, or gum, or wood is scented, as frankincense, varâst, kust, sandalwood, cardamom, camphor, orange-scented mint, and others of this genus, they call a scent (bôd).

(9) And also there was seen manifested on the canopy all the Sumeru mountains, Himalaya mountains, Mucilinda mountains, Mahamucilinda mountains, Gandha mountains, Ratna mountains, Kanaka mountains, Kala mountains, Cakravada mountains, Mahacakravada mountains, oceans, rivers, streams, springs, suns, moons, stars, constellations, palaces of the serpent gods, and many other gods, as well as all the Buddhas and their discourses.

The FUMIGATION from AROMATICS. MUCH-nam'd, and best of dæmons, hear my pray'r, The desart-loving, deck'd with tender hair; Joy to diffuse, by all desir'd is thine, Much form'd, Eubulus; aliment divine Female and Male, all charming to the sight, Adonis ever flourishing and bright; At stated periods doom'd to set and rise, With splendid lamp, the glory of the skies. 8 Two-horn'd and lovely, reverenc'd with tears, Of beauteous form, adorn'd with copious hairs. Rejoicing in the chace, all-graceful pow'r, Sweet plant of Venus, Love's delightful flow'r: Descended from the secret bed divine, Of lovely-hair'd, infernal Proserpine. 'Tis thine to fink in Tartarus profound, And shine again thro' heav'ns illustrious round, With beauteous temp'ral orb restor'd to sight; Come, with earth's fruits, and in these flames delight.

(7) His aspect had bereft me of my sight, So that I turned me back unto my Teachers, Like one who goeth as his hearing guides him. And as, the harbinger of early dawn, The air of May doth move and breathe out fragrance, Impregnate all with herbage and with flowers, So did I feel a breeze strike in the midst My front, and felt the moving of the plumes That breathed around an odour of ambrosia; And heard it said: "Blessed are they whom grace So much illumines, that the love of taste Excites not in their breasts too great desire, Hungering at all times so far as is just."

(23) There spring up also in these Powers and Virtues, all Manner of Blossoms and Flowers, with fair Heavenly Colours and Smells.

(2) Then Vimalakirti having entered into a Samadhi, manifested to the great assembly a country called Sarvagandhasu-gandha, which is situated in the upper regions beyond the Buddha-countries exceeding in number even the sands of forty-two Ganga rivers; and. there is in that land a Buddha living at present, known as Gandhakuta, and the perfume of that land is most excelling even the perfume of men and deities of the worlds of all the Buddhas in all the ten quarters. There in that land neither the name of Sravaka nor of Pratyekabuddha is heard; there is only a great assembly of Bodhisattvas. The Buddha preaches the law to [those Bodhisattva]. Everything in that land is made of perfume. All over the land towers and terraces are built of perfume. People walk on a perfume-ground: All the gardens are of perfume. The savoury perfume of food fills the countless worlds in all the ten quarters.

(8) And he knew that a blessed portion 1 i.t. (?) the promontory on which Mt. Sindi is situated. and a blessing had come to Shem and his sons unto the generations for ever — the whole land of Eden' and the whole land of the Red Sea, and the whole land of the east, and India, and on the Red Sea and the mountains thereof, and all the land of Bashan, and all the land of Lebanon and the islands of Kaftur, and all the mountains of Sanir * and 'Amana, and the mountains of Asshur in the north, and all the land of Elam, Asshur, and Babel, and Sflsan and Ma'gdai, and all the mountains of Ararat, and all the region beyond the sea, which is beyond the mountains of Asshur towards the north, a blessed and spacious land, and all that is in it is very good.
