(3) In his Antiquities of the Jews, Josephus writes that Adam had forewarned his descendants that sinful humanity would be destroyed by a deluge. In order to preserve their science and philosophy, the children of Seth there fore raised two pillars, one of brick and the other of stone, on which were inscribed the keys to their knowledge. The Patriarch Enoch--whose name means the Initiator--is evidently a personification of the sun, since he lived 365 years. He also constructed an underground temple consisting of nine vaults, one beneath the other, placing in the deepest vault a triangular tablet of gold bearing upon it the absolute and ineffable Name of Deity. According to some accounts, Enoch made two golden deltas. The larger he placed upon the white cubical altar in the lowest vault and the smaller he gave into the keeping of his son, Methuseleh, who did the actual construction work of the brick chambers according to the pattern revealed to his father by the Most High. In the form and arrangement of these vaults Enoch epitomized the nine spheres of the ancient Mysteries and the nine sacred strata of the earth through which the initiate must pass to reach the flaming Spirit dwelling in its central core.

(10) And in his life on earth he excelled the children of men save Enoch because of the righteousness, wherein he was perfect. For Enoch's office was ordained for a testimony to the genera- tions of the world, so thathe should recount all the deeds of generation unto generation, till the day of judgment.

(7) For thus did Enoch, the father of your father command Methuselah, his son, and Methuselah his son Lamech, and Lamech commanded me all the things which his fathers commanded him.

(19) And in his seed shall my name be blessed, and the name of my fathers, Shem, and 1 Jacob was to be the founder of the chosen nation; cf. ii. 20. Noah, and Enoch, and Mahalalel, and Enos, and Seth, and Adam.

(7) And I also will give you commandment, my sons, as Enoch commanded his son in the first jubilees : whilst still living, the ^pvpfltM jn hi«; gpnppat'^D, he commanded and testi- fied to his son and to his sons' sons until the day of his death." (85) Now it being, thus, therefore they sought for quite another Treader upon the Serpent; also now they inclined their Heart to God, so that seventy Years after this Murder, they begot a very upright [virtuous] holy Son that feared God, (who established again the pure Church of the Fear of God and promised Seed of the Woman,) whose Name was Seth; who also begot a very upright [virtuous] Son, whose Name was Enos, and then Men began to preach openly [or plainly] of God; and the Christian Church always rose up like a small Flock, in spite of all the Ragings of the Devils.

(4) And in the second AM week of the tenth jubilee Mahalalel took unto him to wife Dinah, the daughter of Baraki' the daughter of his father's brother, and she bare him a son in the third 461 a.m. week in the sixth year, and he called his name Jared ;• for in his days the angels of the Lord descended on the earth, those who are named the Watchers,* that they should instruct the children of men, and that they should do judgment and uprightness on the earth.

(20) And he commanded them that they should observe the way of the Lord ; that they should work righteousness, and love each his neighbour, and act 1 Notice that Methuselah is omitted, and Adam is reckoned among the saints (with Noah and Enoch). on this manner amongst all men ; that they should each so walk with regard to them as to do judgment and righteousness on the earth.

(4) And in the seventh jubilee in the third week AM- Enos took Nam his sister to be his wife, and she bare 325 a.m. mm a son in {he third year of the fifth week, and he called his name Kenan.

(4) And what was and what will be he saw in a vision l of his sleep, as it will happen_to the children of men throughout ..their generations, until, the day of judgment;-. he a saw and understood everything, and wrote his testimony, and placed the testimony on earth for all the children 'of men and 582-588 for their generations.

(4) And Cain took 'Awan AM- his sister to be his wife and she bare him Enoch* at 190-196 the close of the fourth jubilee. And in the first year A M of the first week of the fifth jubilee, houses were built 197 a.m. on the earth, and Cain built a city, and called its name after the name of his son Enoch.

(2) Seth, following the directions of his father, discovered the Garden of Eden without difficulty. The angel who guarded the gate permitted him to enter, and in the midst of the garden Seth beheld a great tree, the branches of which reached up to heaven. The tree was in the form of a cross, and stood on the brink of a precipice which led downward into the depths of hell. Among the roots of the tree he saw the body of his brother Cain, held prisoner by the entwining limbs. The angel refused to give Seth the Oil of Mercy, but presented him instead with three seeds from the Tree of Life (some say the Tree of Knowledge). With these Seth returned to his father, who was so overjoyed that he did not desire to live longer. Three days later he died, and the three seeds were buried in his mouth, as the angel had instructed. The seeds became a sapling with three trunks in one, which absorbed into itself the blood of Adam, so that the life of Adam was in the tree. Noah dug up this tree by the roots and took it with him into the Ark. After the waters subsided, he buried the skull of Adam under Mount Calvary, and planted the tree on the summit of Mount Lebanon.
