(20) If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

(22) He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

(21) And at all times be clean in thy body, and wash thyself with water before thou approachest to offer on the altar, and wash thy hands and thy feet before thou drawest near to the altar; and when thou art done sacrificing, wash again thy hands and thy feet.

(8) ¶The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

(20) As Jesus spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: he went in, and sat down to meat. The Pharisee marvelled that Jesus had not washed before dinner. The Lord said unto him,

(38) Think that your body is the garment of your soul; and therefore preserve it pure.

Impure dæmons vindicate to themselves the impure soul.

(7) With a cup of pure water from the Deep shalt thou purify thy way!

(1) CERTAIN of the scribes saw some of Jesus’ disciples eat bread with unwashen hands. They found fault: for the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brazen vessels, and of tables.

(16) Supper being ended, Jesus riseth; and he laid aside his garments, and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel.

(141) Not nakedness, not platted hair, not dirt, not fasting, or lying on the earth, not rubbing with dust, not sitting motionless, can purify a mortal who has not overcome desires.

(19) Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered,

(346) Say with your mind that the body is the garment of your soul: keep it, therefore, pure since it is innocent.

(2) Therefore, when the womb of the soul, by the father's will, turns itself inward, she is baptized and immediately cleansed of external pollution forced upon her, just as dirty clothing is soaked in water and stirred until the dirt is removed and it is clean. So the cleansing of the soul is to recover the freshness of her former nature and to become as she was.

(6) This, verily, indeed, it was that Uddalaka Aruni knew \vhen he said: — This, verily, indeed, it was that Naka Maudgalya knew when he said: — This, verily, indeed, it was that Kumaraharita knew when he said; * Many mortal men, Brahmans by descent, go forth from this world, impotent and devoid of merit, namely those who practise sexual intercourse without knowing this.' [If] even this much semen is spilled, whether of one asleep or of one awake, [5] then he should touch it, or [without touching] repeat: — f What semen has of mine to earth been spilt now, Whate'er to herb has flowed, whatever to water ' This very semen I reclaim! Again to me let vigor come! Again, my strength; again, my glow! Again the altars and the fire Be found in their accustomed place I Having spoken thus, he should take it with ring-finger and thumb, and rub it on between his breasts or his eye-brows.

(3) And so following, when a man seeth in a bodily or ghostly mirror, or wots by other men’s teaching, whereabouts the foul spot is on his visage, either bodily or ghostly; then at first, and not before, he runneth to the well to wash him. If this spot be any special sin, then is this well Holy Church, and this water confession, with the circumstances. If it be but a blind root and a stirring of sin, then is this well merciful God, and this water prayer, with the circumstances. And thus mayest thou see that no thinking may goodly be gotten in beginners and profiters, without reading or hearing coming before: nor praying without thinking.

(17) Then Simon Peter saith, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered,

(6) Now, if one should see himself in water, he should recite over it the formula: ' In me be vigor, power, beauty, wealth, merit! ' This, verily, indeed, is loveliness among women: when [a woman] has removed the [soiled] clothes of her impurity. Therefore when she has removed the [soiled] clothes of her impurity and is beautiful, one should approach and invite her.

(33) And when Jacob returned and soughther, she said unto him : "I am not clean for thee, for I have been defiled as regards thee ; for Reuben hath defiled me, and hath lain with me in the night, and I was asleep, and did not discover until he uncovered my skirt and slept with me."

(5) It is alluded to in the next Chapter (fifth verse), “thou puttest on the pure garment, and thou divestest the apron, when thou stretchest thyself on the funereal bed.”

(7) Ye hypocrites! For, laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other like things ye do.
