(3) Then Vidagdha Sakalya questioned him. ' How many gods are there, Yajfiavalkya? ' He answered in accord with the following Nivid (invoca- tionary formula): ' As many as are mentioned in the Nimd of the Hymn to All the Gods, namely, three hundred and three, and three thousand and three [=3,306].' ( Yes/ said he, ' but just how many gods are there, Yajna- valkya? ' 'Thuty-three/ valkya? ' valkya? ' ' Yes,' said he, ' but just how many gods are there, Yajna- valkya? ' valkya? ' valkya? 3 and those three thousand and three? ' a. He [i.e. Yajnavalkya] said: ' Those are only their powers (ma/nman). There are just thirty- three gods/ ' Which are those thirty-three? ' ' Eight Vasus, eleven Rudras, twelve Adityas. Those are thirty-one. Indra and Prajapati make thirty-three/

(36) And said to him: "How many are the aeons of the immortals, starting from the infinities?"

(3) The Lord Buddha addressed Subhuti, saying: “What think you? within the myriad worlds which comprise this universe, are the atoms of dust numerous?” Subhuti replied, saying: “Very numerous, Honoured of the Worlds!”

(3) 'Yajfiavalkya/ said he, 'with how many divinities does the Brahman protect the sacrifice on the right today?; ' With one,' ' Which is that one? ' 'The mind. Verily, endless is the mind. Endless are the All-gods. An endless world he wins thereby.'

(3) [Sakalya said:] * Verily, he who knows that Person whose abode is forms (rupd), whose world is the eye, whose light is mind, who is the last source of every soul he, verily, would be a knower, O Yajnavalkya.' whom you speak. That very person who is in the sun is He. Tell me, Sakalya, who is his god? ' 'Truth/ said he.

(1) Yourself and Bhishma and Karna; Kripa, who is ever victorious in war; Aśvatthāmā, Vikarna, Jayadratha, and Somadatta’s son; And many other heroes besides, armed with many weapons, each well skilled in battle, and all resolved to lay down their lives to serve my cause.

(1) This also is worthy, in my opinion, of intellectual attention, that the tradition of the Oracles concerning the Angels affirms that they are thousand thousands, and myriad myriads, accumulating and multiplying, to themselves, the supreme limits of our numbers, and, through these, shewing clearly, that the ranks of the Heavenly Beings cannot be numbered by us. For many are the blessed hosts of the supermundane minds, surpassing the weak and contracted measurement of our material number, and being definitely known by their own supermundane and heavenly intelligence and science alone, which is given to them in profusion by the supremely Divine and Omniscient Framer of Wisdom, and essentiating Cause and connecting Force, and encompassing Term of all created things together. (17) Among his producers of the renovation of the universe, those righteous men of whom it is written that they are living, fifteen men and fifteen damsels, will come to the assistance of Sôshyans.

(7) The Lord Buddha enquired of Subhuti, saying: “What think you? If there were as many rivers Ganges as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, and if there were as many Buddhist worlds as the grains of sand in those innumerable rivers, would these Buddhist worlds be numerous?” Subhuti replied, saying: “Honoured of the Worlds! these Buddhist worlds would be very numerous.”
