(13) Also the Devils tremble at the Kindling of the Wrath, whose Faces appear before the Eyes of the Ungodly; for they see the angelical World before them, and the hellish Fire in them; and they see how every Life burns, and every one in its own Source, in its own Fire. The angelical World burns in Triumph, in Joy, in the Light of the Glory, and it shines as the clear Sun, which neither Devil, nor any of the Wicked dare look upon, and there is Praise [and Hallelujahs] that the Driver is overcome.

(8) Again, it contains also a Fierceness or Wrath which burns, confuses, and spoils; this Wrath or Fierceness springs, drives, and elevates itself in the Light, and makes the Light moveable.

(102) Thou know st Him not. Now He appears as fire, Dread force; as water now; and now as gloom; And in the beasts is dimly shadowed forth, In wind, and cloud, in lightning, thunder, rain; And minister to Him the seas and rocks, Each fountain and the water's floods and streams.

(170) O Security! the Devil watches for thee. O High-mindedness! thou art a hellish Fire. O Beauty, Pomp, or Bravery! thou art a dark Valley. O Potency of Dominion! thou art a Raging and Tearing of the hellish Fire. O Self-Vindication or Vengeance! thou art the fierce Wrath of God.

(119) For the kindled Spirits of God generate themselves thus. I. The Hardness generates a hard, raw, rough, cold, and astringent Quality. II. The Sweetness is grown faint, like a glowing Coal, when there is no more Sap in the Wood, that gasps, and there is no Refreshment for it. III. The Bitterness tears like a hot Plague, and is as bitter as Gall. IV. The Fire burns as a fierce wrathful Sulphur. V. Love is an Enmity here. VI. The Sound is a mere Beating, Rumbling, or Cracking, like the Noise of a Fire breaking forth out of a hollow Place, as if it were great Claps of Thunder. VII. The Circuit, Region, Court, or Residence of the Body is a House of Mourning.

(30) so if it be kindled, then it is a fierce Source of Wrath, and a Beginning of Hell, and a Torment and Woe of the hellish Fire, also a Quality of Darkness; for the Divine Love, and also the Divine Light, are extinguished therein.

(76) When now the wrathful Fire-flash awakened, and rouzed up the Spirits of Nature, which stand in Death in the Earth, and made them moveable by its fierce Terror or Crack, then the Spirits begun, according to their peculiar divine Right, to generate themselves, as they had done from Eternity, and form, figure, or frame a Body together, according to the innate infant Qualities of that Place. (198) A similar Fire flashingly extending through the rushings of Air, or a Fire formless whence cometh the Image of a Voice, or even a flashing Light abounding, revolving, whirling forth, crying aloud. Also there is the vision of the fire-flashing Courser of Light, or also a Child, borne aloft on the shoulders of the Celestial Steed, fiery, or clothed with gold, or naked, or shooting with the bow shafts of Light, and standing on the shoulders of the horse; then if thy meditation prolongeth itself, thou shalt unite all these Symbols into the Form of a Lion.

(50) in the Divine Power, when it is kindled, is the Spirit of the zealous or jealous and bitter Wrath of God, which is unquenchable, as may be seen by the Legions of Lucifer.

(14) A flaming fire surrounded the walls, and its portals blazed with fire.

(30) The outward Comprehensibility or Palpability in the whole Nature of this World, and of all Things which are therein, stands all in the Wrath-fire of God, for it is become thus through the Kindling of Nature. And Lord Lucifer with his Angels has his Dwelling now in the same outward Birth or Geniture which stands in the Wrath-fire.

(2) But we must keep our discourse within bounds, and must search, in our first explanation of the types, for what reason the Word of God prefers the sacred description of fire, in preference to almost every other. You will find it, then, representing not only wheels of fire, but also living creatures of fire, and men, flashing, as it were, like lightning, and placing around the Heavenly Beings themselves heaps of coals of fire, and rivers of flame flowing with irresistible force; and also it says that the thrones are of fire; and that the most exalted Seraphim glow with fire, it shews from their appellation, and it attributes the characteristic and energy of fire to them, and throughout, above and below, it prefers pre-eminently the representation by the image of fire. I think, then, the similitude of fire denotes the likeness of the Heavenly Minds to God in the highest degree; for the holy theologians frequently describe the superessential and formless essence by fire, as having many likenesses, if I may be permitted to say so, of the supremely Divine property, as in things visible. For the sensible fire is, so to speak, in everything, and passes through everything unmingled, and springs from all, and whilst all-luminous, is, as it were, hidden, unknown, in its essential nature, when there is no material lying near it upon which it may shew its proper energy. It is both uncontrollable and invisible, self-subduing all things, and bringing under its own energy anything in which it may happen to be; varying, imparting itself to all things near it, whatever they may be; renewing by its rousing heat, and giving light by its uncovered illuminations; invincible, unmingled, separating, unchangeable, elevating, penetrating, lofty; subject to no grovelling inferiority, ever moving, self-moving, moving other things, comprehending, incomprehended, needing no other, imperceptibly increasing itself, displaying its own majesty to the materials receiving it; energetic, powerful, present to all invisibly, unobserved, seeming not to be, and manifesting itself suddenly according to its own proper nature by friction, as it were by a sort of seeking, and again flying away impalpably, undiminished in all the joyful distributions of itself. And one might find many characteristics of fire, appropriate to display the supremely Divine Energy, as in sensible images. The Godly-wise, then, knowing this, depict the celestial Beings from fire, shewing their Godlikeness, and imitation of God, as far as attainable.

(34) 4th. Fire (ether) He drew forth from the water. He engraved and established by it the Throne of Glory. He fashioned the Seraphim, the Ophanim, and the Holy Living Creatures (Cherubim?), as His ministering angels; and with (of) these three He formed His habitation, as it reads: "Who made His angels spirits, His ministers a flaming fire." (Psalms civ. 4.)

(39) For when he and all his Angels had kindled in their Bodies the qualifying or fountain Spirit of the Fire, then the Unctuosity, Marrow or Fatness burnt in the sweet Water, and the Flash or Terror, which rises up fiercely in the Birth of the Light, became raging and tearing, burning and stinging, and a Being or Substance of a mere opposite or contrary Will. And

(129) But not in such a Form as it now stands, but all will be separated in the kindled Wrath-Fire; and the dark, hot, cold, rugged, hard, bitter, stinking Relicks, Dregs, or Dross, will be left thee for an eternal Inn and Lodging. And

(24) And thence a Fiery Whirlwind drawing down the brilliance of the flashing flame, penetrating the abysses of the Universe; for from thence downwards do extend their wondrous rays.

(92) IV. Fourthly, the Fire-Spirit also, which stands in the horrible Anguish and Pangs of Life, must be also melted away, for it is a continued Father of the Wrath, and out of or from that is generated the hellish Woe.

(74) Moreover, the Wrath-Fire of God does not reach in Nature into the innermost Kernel of the Heart, which is the Son of God, much less into the secret Glory or Holiness of the Spirit, but into the Birth or Geniture of the six qualifying or fountain Spirits, in the Place where the seventh is generated.

(120) Whereby then, in many a Creature, the Wrath-fire would be so very hard kindled, that the Body together with the Spirit will afford and produce an eternal Wrath Saltiter in Hell.

(66) From Him leap forth the Amilicti, the all-relentless thunders, and the whirlwind receiving Bosoms of the all-splendid Strength of Hecaté Father-begotten; and He who encircleth the Brilliance of Fire; And the Strong Spirit of the Poles, all fiery beyond.
