(1) BUT now thou askest me and sayest, “How shall I think on Himself, and what is He?” and to this I cannot answer thee but thus: “I wot not.”

(7) ¶The neighbors said, Is not this he that sat and begged? He answered, I am he.

(7) And, I am the sweet fragrance in the earth, the brilliance in fire, life in all beings, and austerity in ascetics.

(2) I am the first and the last. I am the honored and scorned. I am the whore and holy. I am the wife and the virgin. I am the mother and daughter. I am the members of my mother and the barren one with many sons. I have had a grand wedding and have not found a husband. I am a midwife and do not give birth. I am the solace of my labor pains. I am bride and groom, and my husband produced me. I am the mother of my father and sister of my husband, and he is my offspring. I am a slave of him who prepared me and ruler of my offspring. He produced me earlier yet on my birthday. He is my offspring to come, and from him is my power. I am the staff of his power in his youth and he the rod of my old age, and whatever he wants happens to me. I am a silence incomprehensible and an idea remembered often. I am the voice whose sound is manifold and word whose appearance is multiple. I am the utterance of my name.

(5) Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

(10) I am the punishment of those that chastise and the statesmanship of those that conquer. Of secret things I am silence, and of the wise I am the wisdom.

(123) But now if thou art not thus, then thou art blind herein, though thou were the wittiest and wisest doctor that ever could be found in the world.

(9) Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. very one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

(23) ¶There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

(9) Those persons who worship Me, meditating on their identity with Me and ever devoted to Me— to them I carry what they lack and for them I preserve what they already have.

(40) But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

(25) I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

(8) I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

(35) I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

(2) And I do say: Who art thou? He saith: I am Man-Shepherd (Poemandres), Mind of all-masterhood; I know what thou desirest and I'm with thee everywhere.

(147) I do not write this for my own praise, but to that end that the Reader may know wherein my knowledge stands, that he might not seek that from me which I have not, or think me to be what I am not.

(52) Therefore take heed what thou dost, and consider what thou art; thou judgest others, and art blind thyself.

(18) Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. But I know him; for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

(13) Then the tongue said to him: 'If I am the richest, thou art the richest.' The eye said to him: 'If I am the firm rest, thou art the firm rest 2.'

(13) He who sees that all actions are done only by Prakriti and that the Self is actionless— verily, he alone sees.
