'In this son may I be increased, And have a thousand in mine house! May nothing rob his retinue Of offspring or of animals! Hail! The vital* powers (prana) which are in me, my mind, I offer in you. Hail! What in this rite I overdid, Or what I have here scanty made — Let Agni, wise, the Prosperer, Make fit and good our sacrifice! Hail I'

(8) But they will by no means say that the Deity, enfeebled through the desire that springs from want, is nourished. Accordingly, they will represent Him as nourished without desire like a plant, and like beasts that burrow. They say that these grow innoxiously, nourished either by the density in the air, or from the exhalations proceeding from their own body. Though if the Deity, though needing nothing, is according to them nourished, what necessity has He for food, wanting nothing? But if, by nature needing nothing, He delights to be honoured, it is not without reason that we honour God in prayer; and thus the best and holiest sacrifice with righteousness we bring, presenting it as an offering to the most righteous Word, by whom we receive knowledge, giving glory by Him for what we have learned.

(493) 1059 To say: Greetings to you, who rule over abundance, 1059 who look after food, who reside as ruler of the green field, 1059b + 1 (N. XXVII 704). and drop with my (or, his) anus like eret. 1061a + 1 (Nt. 704). I give offerings and distribute food 1061a + 2 (N. 1055 + 50). like him with the long wings who lives in the Marsh of Reeds. 1061 Wind is in my nose; seed is in my phallus, 1061 as (seed is in the phallus) of him of mysterious form, who lives in splendour. 1061c + 1 (N. 1055 + 50. N. sees Nun, 1061c + 2 (Nt. 705). when she appears on her way. 1061c + 3 (N. 1055 + 51). Honour will be given to N.; 1061c + 4 (Nt. 706). N. will be great because of her power; there will be a six days' feast in Hri-`; 1062. (Nt. 706). N. will eat of the pregnant cow like those who are in Heliopolis.

(1) When the Father produced by intellect And austenty seven kinds of food, One of his [foods] was common to all, Of two he let the gods partake, Three he made for himself, One he bestowed upon the animals On this [food] everything depends, Both what breathes and what does not. How is it that these do not peiish When they are being eaten all the time He who knows this imperishableness— He eats food with his mouth (pratika), He goes to the gods, He lives on strength. Thus the verses.

(172) Heading 101 To say four times: An offering of a meal to N. 101 To say: May Geb make an offering to N. 101 I give to thee every festal offering, every oblation of food and drink, which thou canst desire, 101 wherewith thou shalt be happy with the god for ever and ever.

(2) 'And through their satisfaction he (the sacrificer or eater) himself is satisfied with offspring, cattle, health, brightness, and Vedic splendour.

(1) 'When the Father produced by intellect and austerity seven kinds of food' — truly by intellect and austerity the Father did produce them. ' One of his [foods] was common to all.' That of his which is common to all is the food that is eaten here. He who worships that, is not turned from evil, for it is mixed [i.e. common, not selected]. 'Of two he let the gods partake/ They arc the tmta (fire-sacrifice) and thtfra/mta (offering). For this reason one sacrifices and offers to the gods. People also say that these two are the new-moon and the full-moon sacrifices. Therefore one should not offer sacrifice [merely] to secure a wish first both men and animals live upon milk. Therefore they either make a new-bom babe lick butter or put it to the breast. Likewise they call a new-born calf 'one that does not eat grass ' what does not ' — for upon milk everything depends, both what breathes and what does not. This that people say, cBy offering with milk for a year one escapes the second death ' — one should know that this is not so, since on the very day that he makes the offering he who knows escapes the second death, for he offers all his food to the gods. eaten all the time?' Verily, the Person is imperishableness, for he produces this food again and again. ' He who knows this imperishableness ' — verily, a person is imperishableness, for by continuous meditation he produces this food as his work. Should he not do this, all the food would perish. ( He eats food with his mouth (pratlkd)' The prattka is the mouth. So he eats food with his mouth.

(21) Hermes: But not unheedfully, my son. Tat: Aye. What I behold in mind, that do I say. To thee, thou Parent of my Bringing into Birth, as unto God I, Tat, send reasonable offerings. o God and Father, thou art the Lord, thou art the Mind. Receive from me oblations reasonable as thou would'st wish; for by thy Will all things have been perfected. Hermes: Send thou oblation, son, acceptable to God, the Sire of all; but add, my son, too, "through the Word" (Logos). Tat: I give thee, father, thanks for showing me to sing such hymns.

(599) 1645 To say: N. is Geb, the wise-mouth, hereditary prince of the gods, 1645 whom Atum has placed at the head of the Ennead, with whose words the gods, are satisfied; 1645 and all the gods are satisfied with all which N. has said-everything wherewith it goes well with him for ever and ever. 1646 Atum said to N.: "Behold, the wise-mouth, who is among us; 1646 he greets us; let us unite for him." 1647 O all ye gods, come, assemble; come, unite, 1647 as ye assembled and united for Atum in Heliopolis, 1648 that N. might greet you. Come ye, 1648 do everything wherewith it might go well with N. for ever and ever. 1649 May Geb give an offering; may he give an offering of these joints of meat, an offering of bread, drink, cakes, fowl, 1649 to all the gods, who will cause every good thing to happen to N.; 1649 who will cause this pyramid of N. to endure, 1649 who will cause this temple to endure 1649 just as (in the condition in which) N. loved it to be, for ever and ever. 1650 All gods, who shall cause this pyramid and this temple of N. to be good and to endure 1650 they shall be pre-eminent, they shall be in honour, 1650 they shall become b (spiritually strong), they shall become m (physically strong); 1651 to them shall be given royal offerings of bread, drink, cakes, meat, fowl, linen, oil; 1651 they shall receive their divine offerings; 1651 to them their joints of meat shall be presented; 1651 to them oblations shall be made; 1651 they shall bear off the white crown; 1651 among the Two Enneads.

(64) The gods his fathers beheld him, the gods beheld him

(4) 'Even if he gives what is left of his food to a Kandâla, it would be offered in his (the Kandâla's) Vaisvânara Self. And so it is said in this Sloka:-- 'As hungry children here on earth sit (expectantly) round their mother, so do all beings sit round the Agnihotra, yea, round the Agnihotra.'
