(20) You should not ask of divinity that which, when you have obtained, you will not perpetually possess.

Accustom your soul after [it has conceived all that is great of] divinity, to conceive something great of itself.

(87) Do not wish to acquire honors which are insecure, nor the boastfulness which brings you to ruin.

(171) O Man! why will the world be too narrow for thee? Thou wilt needs have it all for thyself; and if thou hadst it, thou wouldst not have room enough. O, this is the devil's highmindedness, who fell out of heaven into hell.

(122) No crocodile of sorrow will attack thy bark, Thou wilt be at once queen, army, and throne, Thou sayest thou art a great queen of good fortune; But thy fortune is apart from thee and will soon fade, Thou wilt be left like a, beggar without sustenance; Therefore, O chosen one, become thy own fortune. When, O spiritual one, thou hast become thy own fortune, Then, being thyself thy fortune, thou wilt never lose it. How. O fortunate one, canst thou ever lose thyself, When thy real self is thy treasure and thy kingdom?

(71) Saying, "The voice told you to place an arrow on the bow, It did not bid you draw the bowstring to the utmost; It did not bid you draw the bow with all your might; It said, 'Adjust an arrow,' not 'Draw the bow fully.' You elevated the bow to excess, You magnified unduly the bowman's art, Go! abandon this strong bowmanship, Fix an arrow on the string, but make it not fly far. When it falls, dig in that spot and search, Abandon force and seek the treasure with humility."

(3) "Very well," replied the Spirit of the River, "am I then to regard the universe as great and the tip of a hair as small?" "Not at all," said the Spirit of the Ocean. "Dimensions are limitless; time is endless. Conditions are not invariable; terms are not final. Thus, the wise man looks into space, and does not regard the small as too little, nor the great as too much; for he knows that there is no limit to dimension. He looks back into the past, and does not grieve over what is far off, nor rejoice over what is near; for he knows that time is without end. He investigates fulness and decay, and does not rejoice if he succeeds, nor lament if he fails; for he knows that conditions are not invariable. He who clearly apprehends the scheme of existence, does not rejoice over life, nor repine at death; for he knows that terms are not final. "What man knows is not to be compared with what he does not know. The span of his existence is not to be compared with the span of his non-existence. With the small to strive to exhaust the great, necessarily lands him in confusion, and he does not attain his object. How then should one be able to say that the tip of a hair is the ne plus ultra of smallness, or that the universe is the ne plus ultra of greatness?"

(25) Therefore, O dear Soul, turn, and let not the Devil captivate thee, and regard not the Scorn of the World; all thy Sorrow must be turned into great Joy. And though in this World thou hast not great Honour, Power, and Riches, that is nothing; thou knowest not, whether Tomorrow will be the Day it will come to thy Turn [to die.] Does not a Bit of Bread taste better to the Needy, than the best Dainties to the great Ones? What Advantage has the rich Man then, but that he sees much, and must be tormented and vexed in many Things, and in the End must give an Account of all his Doings and Stewardship, and how he has been a Planter in this World? He must give an Account of all his Servants, and if he has been an evil Example to them, and has been a Scandal to them, so that they have walked in ungodly Ways, then their poor Souls cry eternally cfor Vengeance upon those their Superiors; there all stands in the Figure in the Tincture. Why dost thou contend and strive so much after worldly Honour that is transitory? Rather endeavour for the Tree of Pearl, which thou earnest along with thee, and shalt rejoice eternally in its Growing and Fruit.
