(60) The Simple says, God made all Things out of nothing; but he knows not that God; neither does he know what he is: For when he beholds the Earth, together with the Deep above the Earth, he thinks verily all this is not God; or else he thinks, God is not there. He always imagines with himself, that God dwells only above the azure Heaven of the Stars, and rules, as it were, with some Spirit which goes forth from him into this World; and that his Body is not present here upon the Earth, nor in the Earth. And

(33) For before the Beginning of the Creation of the Creatures, there was Nothing but only GOD; and where there is Nothing, out of that, Nothing will be. All Things must have a Cause or Root, or else Nothing will be.

(2) Then presently he thinks God has made this thus, out of or from his predestinate Purpose, out of nothing: How then can God be in this Being? Or, can that be God himself? He continually imagines, that this is only a House, wherein God rules and dwells by his Spirit. God cannot be such a God, whose Being consists in the Power of this Government, or Dominion.

(9) Behold! that is the true one only God, out of whom thou art created, and in whom thou livest; and when thou beholdest the Deep and the Stars, and the Earth, then thou beholdest thy God, and in that same thou livest, and also art, or he by thy Being therein, and that same God governs or rules thee also, and out of or from that same God also thou hast thy Senses, and thou art a Creature out of or from him and in him; else thou hadst been nothing, or wouldst never have been.

(3) It is by Spirit that all things are governed in the Cosmos, and made quick,—Spirit made subject to the Will of Highest God, as though it were an engine or machine. So far, then, [only] let Him be by us conceived,—as Him who is conceivable by mind alone, who is called Highest God, the Ruler and Director of God Sensible, —of Him who in Himself includes all Space, all Substance, and all Matter, of things producing and begetting, and all whatever is, however great it be. XVII

(26) He is proceeded or born of Nothing, but Himself is all in Eternity; and all whatsoever is, is come from his Power, which from Eternity goes from him.

(48) Thou seest in this World nothing but the Deep, and therein the Stars, and the Birth or Geniture of the Elements: Now wilt thou say, God is not there? Pray then, what was there in that Place before the Time of the World? Wilt thou say, there was nothing? then thou speakest without Reason, for thou must needs say, that God was there, or else nothing would there have come to be.

(68) Now, where nothing is, there nothing can come to be: All Things must have a Root, else can nothing grow: If the seven Spirits of Nature had not been from Eternity, then there would no Angel, no Heaven, also no Earth have come to be.

(43) When thou beholdest the Deep betwixt the Stars and the Earth, canst thou say, that is not God, or there God is not? O, thou miserable corrupted Man! be instructed; for in the Deep above the Earth, where thou seest and knowest nothing, and sayest there is nothing, yet even there is the high-holy God in his Trinity, and is generating there, as well as in the high Heaven aloft above this World. Or doth thou think, that he departed and went away from his Seat where he did sit from Eternity, in or at the Time of the Creation of this World? O no; that cannot be, for though He could himself do so, He cannot do it, for He himself is All: And as little as a Member of the Body can be rent off from itself, so little can God also be divided, rent, or separated from being every where.

(9) So, if thou forcest me somewhat too bold, to speak, His being is conceiving of all things and making [them]. And as without its maker its is impossible that anything should be, so ever is He not unless He ever makes all things, in heaven, in air, in earth, in deep, in all of cosmos, in every part that is and that is not of everything. For there is naught in all the world that is not He. He is Himself, both things that are and things that are not. The things that are He hath made manifest, He keepeth things that are not in Himself.

(3) If it was not for this Spirit, there would be neither Angel nor Man, and God would be an unsearchable Being, subsisting only in an unsearchable Power. Question.

(67) this signifies, that when God created Heaven and Earth, and all the Creatures, he nevertheless remained in his Divine, Eternal, Almighty Seat, and never went away from it at all, and that HE alone is ALL. The last Pressure signifies the Sharpness of his Spirit, whereby in a Moment he effects all in his whole Body.

(2) yet if we will speak of God, and say what He is, then, I. We must diligently consider the Powers in Nature. II. Also the whole Creation, Heaven and Earth. III. The Stars, the Elements, and Creatures, which had their Descent from thence; also the holy Angels, Devils, and Men; moreover, Heaven and Hell. Of the Two Qualities in One.

(21) Could He then have made Himself otherwise than as He did?

If He could we must deny Him the power to produce goodness for He certainly cannot produce evil. Power, There, is no producer of the inapt; it is that steadfast constant which is most decidedly power by inability to depart from unity: ability to produce the inapt inability to hold by the fitting; that self-making must be definite once for all since it is the right; besides, who could upset what is made by the will of God and is itself that will?

But whence does He draw that will seeing that essence, source of will, is inactive in Him?

The will was included in the essence; they were identical: or was there something, this will for instance, not existing in Him? All was will, nothing unwilled in Him. There is then nothing before that will: God and will were primally identical.

God, therefore, is what He willed, is such as He willed; and all that ensued upon that willing was what that definite willing engendered: but it engendered nothing new; all existed from the first.

As for his "self-containing," this rightly understood can mean only that all the rest is maintained in virtue of Him by means of a certain participation; all traces back to the Supreme; God Himself, self-existing always, needs no containing, no participating; all in Him belongs to Him or rather He needs nothing from them in order to being Himself.

When therefore you seek to state or to conceive Him, put all else aside; abstracting all, keep solely to Him; see that you add nothing; be sure that your theory of God does not lessen Him. Even you are able to take contact with Something in which there is no more than That Thing itself to affirm and know, Something which lies away above all and is- it alone- veritably free, subject not even to its own law, solely and essentially That One Thing, while all else is thing and something added.

(32) In short, I would have you to understand, that God (in so far as He is good) is goodness as goodness, and not this or that good. But here mark one thing. Behold! what is sometimes here and sometimes there is not everywhere, and above all things and places; so also, what is to-day, or to-morrow, is not always, at all times, and above all time; and what is some thing, this or that, is not all things and above all things. Now behold, if God were some thing, this or that, He would not be all in all, and above all, as He is; and so also, He would not be true Perfection. Therefore God is, and yet He is neither this nor that which the creature, as creature, can perceive, name, conceive or express. Therefore if God (in so far as He is good) were this or that good, He would not be all good, and therefore He would not be the One Perfect Good, which He is. Now God is also a Light and a Reason,40 the property of which is to give light and shine, and take knowledge; and inasmuch as God is Light and Reason, He must give light and perceive. And all this giving and perceiving of light existeth in God without the creature; not as a work fulfilled, but as a substance or well-spring. But for it to flow out into a work, something really done and accomplished,41 there must be creatures through whom this can come to pass.

(14) A: What say'st thou ever, then, God is? H: God, therefore, is not Mind, but Cause that the Mind is; God is not Spirit, but Cause that Spirit is; God is not Light, but Cause that the Light is. Hence one should honor God with these two names [the Good and Father] - names which pertain to Him alone and no one else. For no one of the other so-called gods, no one of men, or daimones, can be in any measure Good, but God alone; and He is Good alone and nothing else. The rest of things are separable all from the Good's nature; for [all the rest] are soul and body, which have no place that can contain the Good.

(13) For if it hath been shown that no thing can [inactive] be, how much less God? For if there's aught he doth not make (if it be law to say), He is imperfect. But if He is not only not inactive, but perfect [God], then He doth make all things. Give thou thyself to Me, My Hermes, for a little while, and thou shalt understand more easily how that God's work is one, in order that all things may be - that are being made, or once have been, or that are going to be made. And this is, My beloved, Life; this is the Beautiful; this is the Good; this, God.

(79) And the Holy Ghost is the Spirit of Life, and a Former, Framer and Creator of all Things, and a Performer of the Will in God, that has formed and created out of or from the Body, and in the Body of the Father, all Angels and Creatures, and holds and forms all still daily, and is the Sharpness and the living Spirit of God. And as the Father speaks or expresses the Word out of or from his Powers, so the Spirit forms or frames them. Of the great Simplicity of God.

(49) 6. He created a reality out of Nothing. He called the nonentity into existence and hewed colossal pillars from intangible air. This has been shown by the example of combining the letter א (A) with all the other letters, and all the other letters with א. By speaking He created every creature and every word by the power of One Name. As an illustration, consider the twenty-two elementary substances from the primitive substance of א. The production of every creature from the twenty-two letters is proof that they are in reality the twenty-two parts of one living body.
