(21) Wherefore we ought to offer to God sacrifices not costly, but such as He loves. And that compounded incense which is mentioned in the Law, is that which consists of many tongues and voices in prayer, or rather of different nations and natures, prepared by the gift vouchsafed in the dispensation for "the unity of the faith," and brought together in praises, with a pure mind, and just and right conduct, from holy works and righteous prayer. For in the elegant language of poetry,- "Who is so great a fool, and among men So very easy of belief, as thinks The gods, with fraud of fleshless bones and bile All burnt, not fit for hungry dogs to eat, Delighted are, and take this as their prize, And favour show to those who treat them thus," though they happen to be tyrants and robbers?

(31) And there was no other Cause of their Employment about offering Sacrifice, than because Man was earthly; and so the Word standing near the Soul in the Gate of the Light of Life, he heard their Prayers through the earthly Source [Quality or Property] of their Smells, [ror Incense;] and so they had a Token in the Fire, that their Prayer was acceptable to God; as may be seen in many Places in Moses, which shall be explained in its due Place.

(29) In the center of the room, almost against the partition leading into the Holy of Holies, stood the Altar of Burnt Incense, made of wood overlaid with golden plates. Its width and length were each a cubit and its height was two cubits. This altar was symbolic of the human larynx, from which the words of man's mouth ascend as an acceptable offering unto the Lord, for the larynx occupies the position in the constitution of man between the Holy Place, which is the trunk of his body, and the Holy of Holies, which is the head with its contents.

(4) In the midst of the covering and veil, where the priests were allowed to enter, was situated the altar of incense, the symbol of the earth placed in the middle of this universe; and from it came the fumes of incense. And that place intermediate between the inner veil, where the high priest alone, on prescribed days, was permitted to enter, and the external court which surrounded it - free to all the Hebrews - was, they say, the middlemost point of heaven and earth.

(269) 376 To say: The fire is laid, the fire shines; 376 the incense is laid on the fire, the incense shines. 376 Thy fragrance comes to N., O Incense; the fragrance of N. comes to thee, O Incense. 377 Your fragrance comes to N., O ye gods; the fragrance of N. comes to you, O ye gods. 377 May N. be with you, O ye gods; may you be with N., O ye gods. 377 May N. live with you, O ye gods; may you live with N., O ye gods. 378 May N. love you, O ye gods; love him, O ye gods. 378 The p-pellet (of incense) comes, the pd-pellet (of incense) comes, (they) come forth from the thigh (or lap, m3.t) of Horus. 379 Those who have ascended are come, those who have ascended are come; those who have climbed are come, those who have climbed are come. 379 Those who lifted themselves up like Shu are come; those who have lifted themselves up like Shu are come. 379 N. ascends on the hips of Isis; N. climbs up on the hips of Nephthys. 380 The father of N., Atum, lays hold of the arm of N.; he assigns N. 380 to those gods, who are the nimble, the wise, the imperishable stars. 381 Mother of N., 'Ipii, 381 give to N. thy breast, 381 that N. may pass it over his mouth (taste it), 381 and that N. may suck thy milk, which is white, light and sweet. 382 That (yonder) land in which (where) N. goes, 382 N. will not thirst in it, N. will not hunger in it for ever.

(11) Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him,

(12) ¶ He found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves; and the changers of money sitting: and when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; and said unto them that sold doves,

(1) If through his action in the offering of gifts in accordance with the Righteous Order, (Thy saint ) shall smite the Demon-of-the-Lie (the inspiring spirit of our foes), when that in very truth shall come , which has been (and is still yet) proclaimed as a deceit , (when it shall come) in the Immortal life, regarding (as it does both) men (to bless), and Daêvas (to afflict them), then shall (Thy faithful worshipper) increase thereby the celebration of Thy praise, O Lord! and with it blessings (for Thy folk).

(7) They cast; and as soon as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus saith,

(5) 'Having dwelt there, till their (good) works are consumed, they return again that way as they came , to the ether, from the ether to the air. Then the sacrificer, having become air, becomes smoke, having become smoke, he becomes mist,

(101) To make these, I say, pure and clean, And, to please God, have quenched those fires, So that the fire of lust, that erst breathed flame, Has become a holy garden and a guiding light, Since you have turned the fire of wrath to meekness, And the darkness of ignorance to shining knowledge, Since you have turned the fire of greed into bounty, And the vile thorns of malice into a rose-garden; Since you have quenched all these fires of your own For my sake, so that those poisons are now pure sweets;

(2) [Trismegistus] Nay, nay, Asclepius; speak more propitious words! For this is like to profanation of [our] sacred rites,—when thou dost pray to God, to offer incense and the rest. For naught is there of which He stands in need, in that He is all things, or all are in Him. But let us worship, pouring forth our thanks. For this is the best incense in God’s sight,—when thanks are given to Him by men.

(12) Now breathing together (sumpnoia) is properly said of the Church. For the sacrifice of the Church is the word breathing as incense from holy souls, the sacrifice and the whole mind being at the same time unveiled to God. Now the very ancient altar in Delos they celebrated as holy; which alone, being undefiled by slaughter and death, they say Pythagoras approached. And will they not believe us when we say that the righteous soul is the truly sacred altar, and that incense arising from it is holy prayer? But I believe sacrifices were invented by men to be a pretext for eating flesh. But without such idolatry he who wished might have partaken of flesh.

(62) And the Lord of Spirits seated him on the throne of His glory, And the spirit of righteousness was poured out upon him, And the word of his mouth slays all the sinners, And all the unrighteous are destroyed from before his face.

(2) They did not receive him; and his disciples James and John said, Lord wilt thou that we command fire to come down and consume them, as Elias did? But he rebuked them, saying,

(24) And, afterwards, he (the evil spirit) came to fire, and he mingled smoke and darkness with it.

(10) The Pharisees with the Sadducees came forth to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. He sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith,

(17) Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying,

(12) And his activities had to do with the Watchers, and his days were with the holy ones.
