(178) The Oracles of the Gods declare, that through purifying ceremonies, not the Soul only, but bodies themselves become Worth) of receiving much assistance and health, for, say they, the mortal vestment of coarse Matter will by these means be purified." And this, the Gods, in an exhortatory manner, announce to the moat holy of Theurgists.

[It] was [necessary for Jesus] to go down into the water [in order to perfect] and purify it. [So also] those who are [baptized] in his name [are perfected]. For he said, “[Thus] shall we perfect all righteousness.”

(36) 28 Thou purifiest (thyself); Horus purifies (himself). Thou purifiest (thyself); Set purifies (himself). Thou purifiest (thyself); Thot purifies (himself). 28 Thou purifiest (thyself); the god purifies (himself). Thou purifiest (thyself); thy ka purifies (himself). Thou purifiest (thyself); thy god purifies (himself). 28 Thou also purifiest (thyself); it is thou who art among thy brothers, the gods. 29 Thy natron is on thy mouth; thou purifiest thy bones, (and) all. Equip thyself with that which belongs to thee. 29 Osiris, I have given to thee the eye of Horus to equip thy face therewith; adhere (to it). 29 One pellet of natron.

(11) And sufficient purification to a man, I reckon, is thorough and sure repentance. If, condemning ourselves for our former actions, we go forward, after these things taking thought, and divesting our mind both of the things which please us through the senses, and of our former transgressions.

(1) Verily, he who purifies (Vâyu) is the sacrifice, for he (the air) moving along purifies everything. Because moving along he purifies everything, therefore he is the sacrifice. Of that sacrifice there are two ways, by mind and by speech.

(84) My son, first purify yourself toward the outward life, in order that you may be able to purify the inward.

(172) Explore the River of the Soul, whence, or in what order you have come: so that although you have become a servant to the body, you may again rise to the Order from which you descended, joining works to sacred reason.

(4) Free from desire, fear, and hatred, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, many purified by the penance of knowledge have attained Me.

(452) 841 To say: O N., stand up, that thou mayest be pure, that thy ka may be pure. 841 Horus purifies thee in b.w. 842 Thy purification is the purification of Shu, thy purification is the purification of Tefnut, 842 thy purification is the purification of the four spirits of the houses, 842 C. when they rejoice in Buto because thou art pure. 842 Thy mother Nut purifies thee, the great protectress, she protects thee. 843 "Take to thee thy head; thy bones are united for thee," says Geb. 843 "Effaced be the evil which is with N., destroyed shall be the evil which is with him," says Atum. 22. (3) It is necessary then, as I think, that those who are being purified should be entirely perfected, without stain, and be freed from all dissimilar confusion; that those who are being illuminated should be filled with the Divine Light, conducted to the habit and faculty of contemplation in all purity of mind; that those who are being initiated should be separated from the imperfect, and become recipients of that perfecting science of the sacred things contemplated. Further, that those who purify should impart, from their own abundance of purity, their own proper holiness; that those who illuminate, as being more luminous intelligences, whose function it is to- receive and to impart light, and who are joyfully filled with holy gladness, that these should overflow, in proportion to their own overflowing light, towards those who are worthy of enlightenment; and that those who make perfect, as being skilled in the impartation of perfection, should perfect those being perfected, through the holy instruction, in the science of the holy things contemplated. Thus each rank of the Hierarchical Order is led, in its own degree, to the Divine co-operation, by performing, through grace and God-given power, those things which are naturally and supernaturally in the Godhead, and accomplished by It superessentially, and manifested hierarchically, for the attainable imitation of the God-loving Minds.

(471) 920 To say: N. is the being of a god, the son of a god, the messenger of a god. 920 N. comes, and N. purifies himself in the Marsh of Reeds, 920 N. comes down to the field of Kns.t. 921 The Followers of Horus purify N. 921 they bathe N., they dry N., 921 they recite for N. the chapter of the right way, 921 they recite for N. the chapter of those who ascend for life and joy. 922 N. ascends to heaven for life and joy. 922 N. embarks (descends) for life and joy into the boat of R`; 922 N. commands for him those gods who transport him. 923 Every god shall rejoice at the approach of N., 923 as they rejoice at the approach of R`, 923 when he comes forth on the eastern side of the sky, in peace, in peace.

(407) 710 To say: N. is pure, so that he can receive for himself his pure place which is in heaven. 710 N. will remain, the beautiful places, of N. will remain. 710 N. receives for himself his pure place which is in the bow of the boat of R`. 711 And the sailors who row R`, 711 they also will row N.; 711 and the sailors will take R` round about the horizon., 711 they also will take N. round about the horizon. 712 N.'s mouth is opened for him, N.'s nose is opened for him, 712 N.'s ears are opened for him, 712 that N. may judge words, that he may separate the two contenders, 713 that he may command words to him who is greater than he. 713 R` purifies N.; R` protects N. against the evil which is done against him.

(16) To this gods and men who were saved attested, thus, the Three Treasures appeared in the saha world to save living beings with this profound Dharma which, when applied, fails never to Nirvana lead. You are the king physician who destroys old age, illness and death. So your unfathomable Dharma of boundless merits, I salute.

(10) Of the great rishis I am Bhrigu, and of words I am the monosyllable “Om.” Of sacrifices I am the sacrifice of japa; of immovable things I am the Himālaya.

(67) But those waters shall in those days serve for the kings and the mighty and the exalted, and those who dwell on the earth, for the healing of the body, but for the punishment of the spirit; now their spirit is full of lust, that they may be punished in their body, for they have denied the Lord of Spirits and see their punishment daily, and yet believe not in His name.

By water and fire this whole realm is purified, the visible by the visible, the hidden by the hidden. Some things are hidden by the visible. There is water within water, there is fire within the oil of anointing.

(1) Now next, the praying of the puiificatory formulas (pavamana). — The Prastotri priest (Praiser), verily, begins to praise with the Chant (sdman). When he begins to praise, then let [the sacrlficer] mutter the following: — ' From the unreal (asaf) lead me to the real (sat) I From darkness lead me to light! From death lead me to immortality ' ' When he says ' From the unreal lead me to the real/ the unreal, verily, is death, the real is immortality. * From death lead me to immortality. Make me immortal ' — that is what he says. death, the light is immortality. ' From death lead me to im- mortality. Make me immortal ' — that is what he says. ' From death lead me to immortality '—there is nothing there that seems obscure. Now whatever other verses there are of a hymn of praise (stotra), in them one may win food for himself by singing. And, therefore, in them he should choose a boon, whatever desire he may desire. That Udgatri priest who knows this — whatever desire he desires, either for himself or for the sacri- ficer, that he obtains by singing. This, indeed, is world-con- quering. There is no prospect of his being without a world who knows thus this Saman.

(11) You have made the pilgrimage and gained the life to come, You have become pure, and that in a moment of time. Of a truth that is God which your soul sees in me, Though the Ka'ba is the house of His grace and favors, Since He made that house He has never entered it, But none but That Living One enters this house; When you have seen me you have seen God, And have circumambulated the veritable Ka'ba. To serve me is to worship and praise God; Open clear eyes and look upon me,
