(5) God is all ear and all eye, if we may be permitted to use these expressions.

(3) But they also depict them under the likeness of men, on account of the intellectual faculty, and their having powers of looking upwards, and their straight and erect form, and their innate faculty of ruling and guiding, and whilst being least, in physical strength as compared with the other powers of irrational creatures, yet ruling over all by their superior power of mind, and by their dominion in consequence of rational science, and their innate unslavishness and indomitableness of soul. It is possible, then, I think, to find within each of the many parts of our body harmonious images of the Heavenly Powers, by affirming that the powers of vision denote the most transparent elevation towards the Divine lights, and again, the tender, and liquid, and not repellent, but sensitive, and pure, and unfolded, reception, free from all passion, of the supremely Divine illuminations. Now the discriminating powers of the nostrils denote the being able to receive, as far as attainable, the sweet-smelling largess beyond conception, and to distinguish accurately things which are not such, and to entirely reject. The powers of the ears denote the participation and conscious reception of the supremely Divine inspiration. The powers of taste denote the fulness of the intelligible nourishments, and the reception of the Divine and nourishing streams. The powers of touch denote the skilful discrimination of that which is suitable or injurious. The eyelids and eyebrows denote the guarding of the conceptions which see God. The figures of manhood and youth denote the perpetual bloom and vigour of life. The teeth denote the dividing of the nourishing perfection given to us; for each intellectual Being divides and multiplies, by a provident faculty, the unified conception given to it by the more Divine for the proportionate elevation of the inferior. The shoulders and elbows, and further, the hands, denote the power of making, and operating, and accomplishing. The heart again is a symbol of the Godlike life, dispersing its own life-giving power to the objects of its forethought, as beseems the good. The chest again denotes the invincible and protective faculty of the life-giving distribution, as being placed above the heart. The back, the holding together the whole productive powers of life. The feet denote the moving and quickness, and skilfulness of the perpetual movement advancing towards Divine things. Wherefore also the Word of God arranged the feet of the holy Minds under their wings; for the wing displays the elevating quickness and the heavenly progress towards higher things, and the superiority to every grovelling thing by reason of the ascending, and the lightness of the wings denotes their being in no respect earthly, but undefiledly and lightly raised to the sublime; and the naked and unshod denotes the unfettered, agile, and unrestrained, and free from all external superfluity, and assimilation to the Divine simplicity, as far as attainable.

(125) If the eyes of thy spirit are to stand open, then thou must generate thus, else thy comprehensibility is a foolish virgin, and it befalls thee, as if a limner should offer to pourtray the Deity on a table, and tell thee, It is made right, the Deity is just so.

(49) The head signifieth heaven; the same is grown on the body, by the veins, passages and going forth of powers; and so all the powers come again from the head and brain into the body, into the fountainveins or arteries of the flesh.

(121) Then the tone lays hold thereon, and goeth forth therewith at the mouth, eyes, ears and nostrils, and executeth that which is decreed in the council of the seven spirits: for as the decree of the council is, so also is the spirit; and the council can alter the same as it will.

(13) And in the head is the divine councilseat or throne, and [the throne] signifieth God the Father, and the five senses or qualities are the counsellors, which have their influences out of the whole body, out of all the powers.

(43) So do the eyes work in the thing they look upon, and the thing works again in the eyes, and the counsellor, the eyes, bringeth it into the head before the princely seat or throne; and there it is to be approved of.

(14) The five senses always hold counsel in the power of the whole body, and when a conclusion is formed, the same is uttered [or pronounced] by the united council [lit. judge] in its [the council's] centre, or in the midst of the body, as a word, in the heart; for the heart is the fountainspring of all powers, whence the word itself taketh its rise [or ariseth]. In this par. a new translation has been substituted for Sparrow's original rendering.

(80) But that the spirit layeth hold on the power and virtue of the word, and goeth another way through the nostrils into the brain before the throne of the senses or thoughts, signifieth that God will extract the heart of the earth from the wrath of wickedness; and use it to his eternal royal praise. Observe:

(2) O Wagtail, you who resemble Moses I Lift up your head and make your shawm resound to celebrate the true knowledge of God. Like Moses you have seen the fire from afar; you are really a little Moses on Mount Sinai. My discourse is sans words, sans tongue, sans sound; understand it then, sans mind, sans ear.

(6) Even as our eye did not uplift itself Aloft, being fastened upon earthly things, So justice here has merged it in the earth. As avarice had extinguished our affection For every good, whereby was action lost, So justice here doth hold us in restraint, Bound and imprisoned by the feet and hands; And so long as it pleases the just Lord Shall we remain immovable and prostrate." I on my knees had fallen, and wished to speak; But even as I began, and he was 'ware, Only by listening, of my reverence, "What cause," he said, "has downward bent thee thus?" And I to him: "For your own dignity, Standing, my conscience stung me with remorse."

(1) Come, then, let us at last, if you please, rest our mental vision from the strain of lofty contemplation, befitting Angels, and descend to the divided and manifold breadth of the many-shaped variety of the Angelic forms, and then return analytically from the same, as from images, to the simplicity of the Heavenly Minds. But let this first be made plain to you, that the explanations of the sacredly depicted likenesses represent the same ranks of the Heavenly Beings as sometimes ruling, and, at other times, as being ruled; and the last, ruling, and the first, being ruled; and the same, as has been said, having first, and middle, and last powers --without introducing anything absurd into the description, according to the following method of explanation. For if indeed we were to say that some are ruled by those above them, and then that they rule the same, and that those above, whilst ruling those below, are ruled by those same who are being ruled, the thing would manifestly be absurd, and mixed with all sorts of confusion. But if we say that the same rule and are ruled, but no longer the self-same, or from the self-same, but that each same is ruled by those before, and rules those below, one might say appropriately that the Divinely pictured presentations in the Oracles may sometimes attribute, properly and truly, the very same, both to first, and middle, and last powers. Now the straining elevation to things above, and their being drawn unswervingly around each other, as being guardians of their own proper powers, and that they participate in the providential faculty to provide for those below them by mutual communication, befit truly all the Heavenly Beings, although some, pre-eminently and wholly, as we have often said, and others partially and subordinately.

(7) In like manner His outward man, or soul with the left eye, was never hindered, disturbed or troubled by the inward eye in its contemplation of the outward things that belonged to it. Now the created soul of man hath also two eyes. The one is the power of seeing into eternity, the other of seeing into time and the creatures, of perceiving how they differ from each other as afore-said, of giving life and needful things to the body, and ordering and governing it for the best. But these two eyes of the soul of man cannot both perform their work at once; but if the soul shall see with the right eye into eternity, then the left eye must close itself and refrain from working, and be as though it were dead. For if the left eye be fulfilling its office toward outward things; that is, holding converse with time and the creatures; then must the right eye be hindered in its working; that is, in its contemplation. Therefore whosoever will have the one must let the other go; for “no man can serve two masters.”

(369) 640 To say: O Osiris N., stand up. Horus has caused thee to stand up. 640 Geb has caused Horus to see his father in thee, in thy name of "He of the royal castle." 641 Horus has given the gods to thee; he has brought them to thee, so that they may illuminate thy face. 641 Horus has given his eye to thee, that thou mayest see with it. 642 Horus has placed thine enemy under thee, 642 that he may carry thee, that thou be not far from him, 642 and that thou mayest come (again) in thy (former) state. The gods have bound (again) thy face to thee. 643 Horus has opened thine eye for thee, that thou mayest see with it, in her (the eye) name of "Opener of the way." 643 Thine enemy is smitten by the children of Horus; they made his smiting red (bloody); 643 they have punished him; he is severely punished, so that his smell is evil. 644 Horus has fitted thy mouth to thee; he has adjusted for thee thy mouth to thy bones. 644 Horus has opened thy mouth for thee; 644 thy beloved son has re-instated thy two eyes for thee. 644 Horus does not permit thy face to be without the power to see, 644 in thy name of "Horus chief of his subjects."

(443) Utterances 443. 823 To say: Nut, two eyes are come forth from thy head. 823 Thou hast taken possession of Horus and his Great-in-charms; 823 thou hast taken possession of Set and his Great-in-charms. 823 Nut, thou hast numbered thy children, in thy name of "rp.tsedan-chair of Heliopolis." 823 Thou shalt reclaim N. also for life; he shall not perish.

(611) 1724 To say: Thou who livest art living, father, in this thy name of "With the gods"; 1724 thou shalt dawn as Wepwawet, a soul at the head of the living, 1724 that mighty one at the head of the spirits. 1725 The king N. is a d-wr, who is at your head, spirits; 1725 the king N. is the great mighty-one, who is at your head, spirits; 1725 the king N. is a Thot among you, gods. 1726 The bolt is drawn for thee, 1726 (the bolt) to the two ram-portals, which hold people back. 1726 Thou countest enemies; thou takest the hand of the imperishable stars. 1727 Thine eyes are open; thine ears are open; 1727 enter into the house of the guardian; let thy father Geb guard thee. 1728 The water-holes are united for thee; the lakes are brought together for thee, 1728 for Horus who will avenge his father, for king N. who will avenge his body. 1729 A vulture greater than thou (does) triple homage to thee. 1729 It is agreeable to thy nose on account of the smell of the 'i.twt.t-crown.

(62) And thus the Lord commanded the kings and the mighty and the exalted, and those who dwell on the earth, and said: 'Open your eyes and lift up your horns if ye are able to recognize the Elect One.'

(63) Thus spake the Lord of Spirits: 'This is the ordinance and judgement with respect to the mighty and the kings and the exalted and those who possess the earth before the Lord of Spirits.'

(4) And it, varies according to the nature and the material. In the case of arms and of fighting animals the ordering power is the soul and mind, by means animate and inanimate; and in the case of the passions of the soul, which we master by virtue, reason is the ordering power, by affixing the seal of continence and self-restraint, along with holiness, and sound knowledge with truth, making the result of the whole to terminate in piety towards God. For it is wisdom which regulates in the case of those who so practise virtue; and divine things are ordered by wisdom, and human affairs by politics - all things by the kingly faculty. He is a king, then, who governs according to the laws, and possesses the skill to sway willing subjects. Such is the Lord, who receives all who believe on Him and by Him. For the Father has delivered and subjected all to Christ our King," that at the name of Jesus every knee may bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.'

(145) That now is the divine power, which all the creatures are subjected to; for all whatsoever it is that liveth and moveth is in God, and God himself is all, and all whatsoever is formed or framed, is formed out of HIM, be it either out of love or out of wrath.
