(11) It is said also in a certain oracle,- "A pillar to the Thebans is joy-inspiring Bacchus," from the history of the Hebrews. Also Euripides says, in Antiope,- "In the chambers within, the herdsman, With chaplet of ivy, pillar of the Evoean god." The pillar indicates that God cannot be portrayed. The pillar of light, too, in addition to its pointing out that God cannot be represented, shows also the stability and the permanent duration of the Deity, and His unchangeable and inexpressible light. Before, then, the invention of the forms of images, the ancients erected pillars, and reverenced them as statues of the Deity.

(8) And he knew that the Garden of Eden is the holy of holies, and the dwelling of the Lord, and Mount Sinai the centre of the desert, and Mount Zion — the centre of the navel of the earth : these three were created as holy places facing each other.

(10) And the Lord descended, and we descended with Him to see the city and the tower which the children of men had built.

(7) Again, there is the veil of the entrance into the holy of holies. Four pillars there are, the sign of the sacred tetrad of the ancient covenants.

(45) The Pyramid Texts furnish some interesting information not contained in the Book of the Dead. We are told that the approach to the Garden is over the Lake of Putrata (see chapter 40, ), that there is a great lake (? that of Konsit) in the middle of the Garden of Ḥotepit, upon which the great gods alight, and that the Achmiu Sekiu , the starry deities who never set, there feed the departed from the wood of life ( lignum vitæ ) “upon which they themselves live, in order that he too may live.” Shu and Tefnut are mentioned as divinities of this place. But perhaps the most remarkable fact is that Horus had enemies even here, who, however, were annihilated by the divine weapons at the disposal of the departed worthy, who was led there in order that “he might sit among the stars in heaven.”

(1) Land of the Rod, of the White Crown of the Image, and the Pedestal of the gods

(1) WE SHALL NOW TELL OF THE HOUSE of the God. The house was also given the same name as the god. The Great Edifice of Tohil was the name of the Temple of Tohil, of those of Cavec. Avilix was the name of the Temple of Avilix, of the people of Nihaib; and Hacavitz was the name of the Temple of the God of the people of Ahau-Quiché. Tzutuhá, which is seen in Cahbahá, is the name of a large edifice in which there was a stone which all the lords of Quiché worshiped and which was also worshiped by all the tribes.

(616) midst of the light, they saw the ends of the chains of heaven let down from above: for this light is the belt of heaven, and holds together the circle of the universe, like the under-girders of a trireme. From these ends is extended the spindle of Necessity, on which all the revolutions turn. The shaft and hook of this spindle are made of steel, and the whorl is made partly of steel and also partly of other materials. Now the whorl is in form like the whorl used on earth; and the description of it implied that there is one large hollow whorl which is quite scooped out, and into this is fitted another lesser one, and another, and another, and four others, making eight in all, like vessels which fit into one another; the whorls show their edges on the upper side, and on their lower side all together form one continuous whorl. This is pierced by the spindle, which is driven home through the centre of the eighth. The first and outermost whorl has the rim broadest, and the seven inner whorls are narrower, in the following proportions—the sixth is next to the first in size, the fourth next to the sixth; then comes the eighth; the seventh is fifth, the fifth is sixth, the third is seventh, last and eighth comes the second. The largest [or fixed stars] is spangled, and the seventh [or sun] is brightest; the eighth [or moon]

(83) But seeing it has been the most excellent rising up and generating in the holy heavenly nature, therefore also it is loved by man above all other things in this world. For nature has indeed written in man's heart that it is better than other stones and earth; but nature could not reveal or manifest to him the ground thereof, from whence it is come or proceeded, whereby now thou may observe the Dayspring or Morningredness.

(47) The Garden of Aarru, is often mentioned in connection with that of Ḥotepit, and may perhaps be considered as the most notable part of it. It is through its Gate that the Sun-god rises up into Heaven

(18) ⌈⌈And I saw how the winds stretch out the vaults of heaven⌉⌉, and have their station between heaven and earth: ⌈⌈these are the pillars of the heaven⌉⌉.

(478) 971 To say: Greetings to thee, Ladder of god; 971 greetings to thee, Ladder of Set. 971 Stand up Ladder of god; 971 stand up Ladder of Set; stand up Ladder of Horus 971 which was made for Osiris, that he may ascend upon it to heaven and do service of courtier to R`. 972 Thou art come in search of thy brother, Osiris, 972 after his brother Set had cast him on his side, 972 on yonder side of G.ti. 973 Horus comes, his lion-helmet on his head; his face he turns towards his father, Geb. 973 N. is thy son, N. is Horus. 974 Thou hast conceived N. as thou hast conceived the god, lord of the ladder, 974 to whom thou hast given the ladder of the god, to whom thou hast given the ladder of Set, 974 that N. may ascend to heaven on it and do service of courtier to R`. 975 Let also the ladder of god be given to N., let the ladder of Set be given to N. 975 that N. may ascend to heaven on it, and do service of courtier to R`, 975 just like gods who are gone to their kas. 976 The eye of Horus glowers (?) on the wing of Thot, 976 on the left side of the ladder of the god. 976 O men, a uraeus-serpent (goes) to heaven. N. is the eye of Horus. 976 After its foot has been stopped at every place where it was, N. goes as the eye of Horus goes. 977 Be pleased that N. come among you, ye his brothers, the gods; 977 rejoice at the approach of N., ye his brothers, the gods, 977 as Horus rejoiced at the approach of his eye, 977 after his eye was given (back) to him in the presence of his father, Geb. 978 Every spirit, every god, who shall oppose his arm to N., 978 when he ascends to heaven on the ladder of the god, 978 the earth shall not be hoed for him, the wdn.t-offering shall not be made for him, 978 he shall not ferry over to the evening meal in Heliopolis, 978 he shall not ferry over to the morning meal in Heliopolis. 979 He shall guard himself, he has obligated himself, (he) who will see, (he) who will hear, 979 that he (the deceased) ascends to heaven on the ladder of the god, 979 appearing like the uraeus-serpent which was on the forehead of Set. 980 Every spirit, every god who shall open his arms to N. (will be) on the ladder of the god. 980 United for N. are his bones, assembled for him are his limbs; 980 N. has sprung up to heaven on the fingers of the god, lord of the ladder.

(13) The Great Circle of gods in Pu and Tepu is of Horus, Isis, Emsta, Hapi; and the pillars of Horus are erected when Horus saith to those who follow him “let the flag-staffs be erected there.”

(5) The head of the person who is there in that orb is Bhur — there is one head, this is one syllable. Bkuvar is the arms — there are two arms, these are two syllables. Svar is the feet 1 ' Truth* is another meaning (beside ' the Real') of the word satyam. anrtam* — there are two feet, these are two syllables (su-ar). The mystic name (upanisad) thereof is * Day ' (ahan). He slays ( */kan) evil, he leaves it behind ( «/ha) who knows this.

(24) The soul of the deceased is supposed to be in the chamber, and to worship the rising and the setting sun

(75) As for the twelve portals in the heaven, at the ends of the earth, out of which go forth the sun, moon, and stars, and all the works of heaven in the east and in the west.

(5) 2. The garden of Aarru; the god in it is Rā

(18) I saw the winds on the earth carrying the clouds: I saw ⌈⌈the paths of the angels. I saw⌉⌉ at the end of the earth the firmament of the heaven above. And I proceeded and saw a place which burns day and night, where there are seven mountains of magnificent stones, three towards the east, and three towards the south.
