(19) When the world Abhirati was manifested, fourteen Nayutas of men in this Saha world cherished the thought of supreme enlightenment. They all wished to be born in the land of Abhirati, and Buddha Sakyamuni gave them his assurance and said: “Ye shall all be born in that land.”

(6) Having attained to the worlds of the righteous, and having dwelt there for eternal years, he who failed in Yoga is reborn in a house of the pure and wealthy.

(1) 'There is a town with eleven gates belonging to the Unborn (Brahman), whose thoughts are never crooked. He who approaches it, grieves no more, and liberated (from all bonds of ignorance) becomes free. This is that.'

(6) Else, he is born in a family of wise Yogins only. This, verily, a birth like this, is very hard to obtain in this world.

(43) Wake up from thy rest, thine abode is in Manu

(4) If one is fortunate among men and wealthy, lord over others, best provided with all human enjoyments — that is the highest bliss of men. Now a hundredfold the bliss of men is one bliss of those who have won the fathers' world. Now a hundredfold the bliss of those who have won the fathers' world is one bliss in the Gandharva- world. A hundredfold the bliss in the Gandharva-world is one bliss of the gods who gain their divinity by meritorious works. A hundredfold the bliss of the gods by works is one bliss of the gods by birth and of him who is learned in the Vedas, who is without crook- edness, and who is free from desire. A hundredfold the bliss of the gods by birth is one bliss in the Prajapati- world and of him who is learned in the Vedas, who is without crookedness, and who is free from desire. A hundredfold the bliss in the Prajapati-world is one bliss in the Brahma-world and of him who is learned in the Vedas, who is without crookedness, and who is free from desire. This truly is the highest world. This is the Brahma-world, O king/ — Thus spake Yajnavalkya, [Janaka said:] c I will give you, noble Sir, a thousand [cows]. Speak further than this, for my release.' Then Yajnavalkya feared, thinking: ' This intelligent king has driven me out of every corner.' l

(45) There in this chamber all the magnificent heavenly palaces and all the pure lands of all the Buddhas are manifested ; this is the eighth of those things which are unobtainable and have never existed before.

(13) Sariputra spoke : “ O sir, I have never seen before so small a chamber able to contain [so many] thrones, so high and so broad. And in the city of Vaisali or even in the villages and towns of the Jambudvipa and the four worlds and in the palaces of deities, kings of serpents and goblins, there is nothing diminished.”

(2) The southern gate is the Vyâna (back-breathing), that is the ear, that is the moon. Let a man meditate on that as happiness and fame. He who knows this, becomes happy and famous.

(32) The firm mind is the pure land of the Bodhisattva; when he shall arrive at full enlightenment, beings who are endowed with virtues will be born in that land.

(5) Come forth to the bliss [47] towards which we are bound

(4) e Having had enjoyment in this state of sleep, having traveled around and seen good and bad, he hastens again 9 according to the entrance and place of origin, back to the state of waking. Whatever he sees there [i. e. in dreaming sleep], he is not followed by it, for this person is without attach- ments/ [Janaka said:] ' Quite so, Yajnavalkya. I will give you, noble Sir, a thousand [cows]. Declare what is higher than this, for my release/
