(43) Thus Moses has a Vail before his Eyes; and if thou wouldst see his Face, then thou must only set Christ thy Champion before thee, that he may lift up his Vail, and then thou shalt see that Moses has kno Horns, but that he is a patient Lamb, fast bound to the Death of Christ, and that his Vail was the Book that was shut, so that we could not be well enough till the Champion came, and broke its seven Seals with his Entering into Death, and there the Vail [or Covering] was done away; and in that Book there stood the holy Gospel of the Kingdom of God, which our worthy Conqueror Jesus Christ has mleft us. (12) It is one of the twelve: he that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

(15) It is, then, proper that the Barbarian philosophy, on which it is our business to speak, should prophecy also obscurely and by symbols, as was evinced. Such are the injunctions of Moses: "These common things, the sow, the hawk, the eagle, and the raven, are not to be eaten." For the sow is the emblem of voluptuous and unclean lust of food, and lecherous and filthy licentiousness in venery, always prurient, and material, and lying in the mire, and fattening for slaughter and destruction.

The same is the first, incorruptible, eternal, unbegotten, indivisible, dissimilar: the dispenser of all good; indestructible; the best of the good, the Wisest of the wise; He is the Father of Equity and Justice, self-taught, physical, perfect, and wise-He who inspires the Sacred Philosophy.

(90) And after that I saw in my vision all the birds of heaven coming, the eagles, the vultures, the kites, the ravens; but the eagles led all the birds; and they began to devour those sheep, and to pick out their eyes and to devour their flesh.

(6) So very mystically the five loaves are broken by the Saviour, and fill the crowd of the listeners. For great is the crowd that keep to the things of sense, as if they were the only things in existence. "Cast your eyes round, and see," says Plato, "that none of the uninitiated listen." Such are they who think that nothing else exists, but what they can hold tight with their hands; but do not admit as in the department of existence, actions and processes of generation, and the whole of the unseen. For such are those who keep by the five senses. But the knowledge of God is a thing inaccessible to the ears and like organs of this kind of people. Hence the Son is said to be the Father's face, being the revealer of the Father's character to the five senses by clothing Himself with flesh. "But if we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." "For we walk by faith, not by sight," the noble apostle says. Within the veil, then, is concealed the sacerdotal service; and it keeps those engaged in it far from those without.

And as at some keen light one wakes from sleep By reason of the visual spirit that runs Unto the splendour passed from coat to coat,

(18) But whence could they understand or comprehend these things? We who have rightly understood speak the commandments as the Lord wished; wherefore He circumcised our ears and hearts, that we may comprehend these things. And when he says, 'Thou shalt not eat the eagle, the hawk, the kite, and the crow; he says,' Thou shalt not adhere to or become like those men who know not how to procure for themselves subsistence by toil and sweat, but live by plunder, and lawlessly.' For the eagle indicates robbery, the hawk injustice, and the raven greed. It is also written,' With the innocent man thou wilt be innocent, and with the chosen choice, and with the perverse thou shall pervert.' It is incumbent on us to cleave to the saints, because they that cleave to them shall be sanctified."

(101) And the horse shall walk up to the breast in the blood of sinners, And the chariot shall be submerged to its height.

(100) Against which the wrath, with its snarling in the astringent and bitter quality, at the hinder gums in the hollow on the tongue, struggles, and keeps its right to itself, and keepeth its seat in its place, and lets the meek spirit come forth from the heart, through itself [the wrath], and thundereth with its [the wrath's] snarling after the meek spirit, and so helps to form or frame the word, yet with its thundering cannot get away from its seat, but abideth in its hollow hole, as a captive prisoner, and appears terrible. This is a great Mystery.

(6) Then he touches it, saying: c Thou art the moving. Thou art the glowing. Thou art the full. Thou art the steadfast. Thou art the sole resort. Thou art the sound hin that is made. (16) When thou openest thy eyes, and seest the being of God [which is everywhere], then thou prickest as it were with thorns into the being of God, and movest or stirrest up the wrath and anger of God.

(7) Again, there is the veil of the entrance into the holy of holies. Four pillars there are, the sign of the sacred tetrad of the ancient covenants.

(46) And the young Man said; Thy Ornament is mine already, I [will] use thee according to my Will; in that thou sayest I shall be broken, (corrupted or destroyed,) yet my Worm is eternal, I will rule with that; and yet I will dwell in thee, and cloath thee with my Garments.
